My phone is only 3% charged and is on the charger. How long will it take for the firmware update?

Welcome to Android Central! Some devices will tell you specifically what battery level it requires in order to do a system update -- I recall about 30%.

I've seen some require an 80% charge.

But yes, it's very unwise to even attempt an update at 3%, and worse yet to keep running the battery that low in the first place.

as far as how long it will take to update, it depends on how busy the server is and how fast your connections is.
