My trusty old note 10.1 2014 seems to be dying/aging

Factory reset wipes all you data off BUTdoes not remove root. So yes you will have setup your email accounts from scratch. As Tube said FDR=Factory Data Reset. Back to the present latest version of the OS that you had on the Note.

I have kitkat

But the FDR did not work :(
It went for a few minutes, then rebooted to the same hang screen

Any other ideas? Pleaseeeeeee

ok this canot be good

started the factory reset, seemed like it was starting but the screen said something about that E: /cache again. the bar on the bottom showed some animation, but not really like a progress bar moving. It did that for just a few mintues, then rebooted to that same, screen, the SAMSUNG then just hung.

Am I just out of options here.?

Why cant it see the backup on my sd card? ( did remove the card before the reset attempt)

It can take quite a few minutes to totally restore after a FDR. There is no indication that android is actually restoring in the background. On a phone you would have a pulsing led but disconcertingly on the Note there is nothing to assure you it's restoring. How long did you leave it on the Samsung logo?

Umm a few minutes? Should I leave it there for longer? There was no indication it was doing anything, and as this is the first time Im doing this I really had no indication it was doing anything.. Should I begin the FDR again, and let it sit at the SAMSUNG logo screen?

roughly how long? an hour? more?

ok just tried the FDR again, went a few seconds now, and I get this:

Should I hit BACK, then reboot, then just wait?

Between 7 and 10 minutes I'd say. Never really timed it but more than 2 minutes for sure...

OHHH OHHHH OHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got a NEW SCREEN , like a SETUP SCREEN??

What the heck happened............... maybe NEW HOPE!

OMG OMG OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

its BACK, its now downloading my apps, and I have a working fresh screen.

THANK YOU SOOOO much Bosbouer, and Tube , and everyone else who has tried to help.

I guess I have a fresh tablet, or will as soon as my apps load. I have to re org my home screens , but thats really the VERY least of my issues

being the analytic neurotic I am, still wondering why the recovery mode did not see my backup, and why they dont give SOME indication to wait, when the screen boots, and also why that error, unable to mount cache came up. But I guess there are some things we just wont know.. but Im feeling a GREAT sense or relief, thanks to this wonderful helpful forum

Oh, wow, I hope all went well. I was tweaking my own phone last night and fell asleep doing so lol

Well it's going pretty well. At least Ihave my tablet back. I'd still really like to know why the restore could not see my backup and why the cache wipe failed. But for now just trying to get everything back to where it was. And why do some apps auto dl and some do not.

But after going to sleep so sad thinking I'd never get it back, I'm so glad I do.

You had me worried there for a moment. I checked my twrp and restore does see the backup on the external sd card.

As does ES file explorer 2016-04-06 09.51.58.jpg

What about having a custom ROM? I'm sure that tablet would be begging for a custom OS. In terms of performance it would improve greatly!

Factory reset is an amazing thing! I'm still running a 2012 Note 10.1 that I've had 3 years now, lol. After 2 years it was running horribly and battery life was only a couple days with minimal use. Once I figured out how to backup all of my S-Notes and other work files, I did the factory reset. I only re-installed what I needed app-wise, avoided any Recycle Bin apps (always cause problems on anything I have), and presto! Runs flawlessly and the battery lasts over a week. I keep wanting to buy a Surface Pro, but can't justify it while the old champ is still running perfectly. I have a 32gb SD card for pics/videos, and I'm running factory image, btw.

Huh, so any guess why my restore did not see my b/u. Also why . My ESfile exp. Could not? In ES in the tools section there is root explorer, but when I go into it , its really just a task killer. I'm tempted to try another b/u to the card and see if I can see it. But at this point I'm afraid to even temp fate by going into twrp

Tablet seems to be running better, other than some of my apps downloaded updated versions that have some differences I don't like which is why I generally don't update apps. Ex: my rdp lite remote desktop, update does not have the double tap back button to exit, and the updated picsart I don't like the new ui and the updated utorrent doesn't autostart when tapping a magnet link, it's a long press and then select 'open in utorrent" option. Just a bunch of little annoyances.

I'm just still amazed I have it back, I honestly thought it was a gonner.

Well after this nightmare with twrp and having to almost trash the tablet, frankly I'm afraid to mess with a custom ROM at this point

So under the category of, we can never really leave well enough alone, can we? ;-) . I went back into twrp and did a new b/u and, this one does show up on my extSD AND I also can see it with ES file explorer. Who knows what happened before, maybe the tablet was so messed up it did not do the b/u correctly ?

Oh well guess I'll move on and wait for my next adventure in techland. ;-). It's just in the blood for some huh? Ha!

My apologies if this was already offered but I have the note 10.1 2014 and found installing a custom ROM brought it new life. I found a Cyanogenmod ROM for it (possibly slightly older - Android 5.0 not 5.1) on XDA and it's like a new tablet. The stylus functionality is not there but for everything else I couldn't be happier. Battery life is even improved over stock ROM and overall it's very snappy and smooth. I'll look to see if I can find the info I used for the install but doing some Googling should get you to where you need to be. Good luck!

Well, on the good side, that nandroid backup you made is good to have. :D

Alot of us that root and have been rooting have been through what you went through. Trust me. I have been up many late nights trying to tinker with a phone or tablet and my wife looks at me the next morning and just shakes her head lol
