Need someone to walk me through rooting

ok thanks for all the tips. Couple more questions.
1. As far as battery life, i can leave it plugged in during the install of themes correct?
2. I am looking for a theme and want to make sure that I am loading the correct one that is compatible with Cyanogenmod 6.1.2 (which i just finished Downloading using rom manager). Would this one be compatible-->[Theme/Mods] Konikub's Theme Collection (1-13-11) Evo Elite + GB Colored Menus!!! - xda-developers
3. When i load the zip file to sd card do i just DL it from the phone or use USB cable to load it to sd card?

1. The link you posted are flashed as mods. Yes you can plug in the phone while flashing mods.

2. Read this from that page "which is from the newest OTA update of 3.70.651.1" Uhh... short answer is NO. CM is NOT BASED ON SPRINT/HTC CODE. So therefore, mods/themes developed for ROMs based off HTC/Sprint are not mutually adaptable for themes for CM and vice versa. I mean, the screenshots on that page show HTC Sense/Rosie launchers.. that right there is a dead giveaway that it cannot be used for CM.

3. Clicking on that link says that it's a flashable zip. It doesn't matter how it gets to the sdcard.

Just nandroid backup before flashing any mods--there's no undo/uninstall button for mods, so you need a nandroid to revert if things go wonky.

thanks. I was having trouble getting my contacts from gmail and no market so i went back to the first recovery i did this morning. trying to get all this figured out . The only 2 things i managed to do all day was root the phone and wireless tethering lol. Im tryin to get my phone to look like some of the ones ive seen around that have awsome screenshots with different fonts ect. just gota get the right idea of what im suppose to DL and what is compatible and whats not. As well as what the better rom to use is.

I would say if you're just switching roms n things you can just dl ROM Manager from the android market. It can flash clockwork or amon ra recovery and reboot into recovery, you can dl several roms, fix permissions, its really handy, and free. theres a paid version that has even more options available but the free one works for me.

Make sure you download the Google apps with cm cause you wont have market place and all that if you don't.

Im trying to start simple and DL a Boot animation. it is in a zip file but when i go to flash it i cant find it. I am DL straight from my phone. Am I missing something?

You don't flash boot animations, You put them in system/media. You'll need to push them with adb or use root explorer to mount the folder as read/write and paste it in.

so what your saying is that i need to creat a file/folder on my SD card labeled media. Then DL root explorer from the market. is this correct?
