Just ordered a Nexus 5x and its scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Of course after I ordered it i've come across many negative articles about the phone, some on android central. I was very excited about using this phone for the next several months and I know opinions on phones are worse than political opinions, but anybody that can give me some reassurance would be appreciated.

What are the comments that you're hearing? Do they predate the software update that the 5X received earlier this month?

Nexus 5X - One of the best screens in the business, great battery life, great software, small, light and very secure.

I'm a moderate user who doesn't game or watch videos (and barely uses social media). My phone is used to keep me in touch with others (SMS/MMS, IM, email), keep me and my life (work and family) organized, and provide constant access to information.

I love this phone!

It's almost the perfect size/dimensions (just a tad tall, I'd say....Moto X 2nd gen is probably the perfect size and shape, if you ask me) for smaller hands and it does everything I need it to do smoothly, quickly, and without all the stupid bloatware that other phones have on them.

Pictures come out lovely, btw. I snap photos of everything that I want to remember--scenes, documents, handwritten notes, etc so that I only have to carry the phone :)

I've been a Motorola enthusiast for several years--especially since 2013 when they launched their first Moto X with a "pure Android experience." They have thoughtful additions to the stock OS, but honestly I'm thinking that I'd rather have "pure Android" in my future phones

I do kind of wish that the speaker on this phone were a little better, but that's kind of a piddly complaint in the overall scheme of things I guess.

Most of the gripes were about lag and the camera app. Most of the articles, but not all, did predate the new update and i've been reading the thread on here and saw a lot of positive reaction to the update. I was just curious as to how it operates for a normal user on a day to day basis. Your comments alone make me feel much better.

I've actually NOT noticed any lag on my 5X, even early on.

I don't take lots of photos at once, so I've never seen my camera app hang either....but just noticed that HDR+ seems to be off so maybe that's why?

All around a great phone. The size and performance was just what I expected

With the last update, the Nexus 5X is a really good phone. Previously, something was ramping the CPU up and causing random lag and making a mess of things.

The camera is the only place that needs a bit more work. It's a great camera, but it's slower to open than it should be sometimes.

I'd recommend it as the best bang for your buck right now in an Android phone.

Phone performance is fantastic. Just make sure you update to the latest build.

Thanks for the reassurance. Looking forward to a FedEx Delivery tomorrow!

You know... not sure what's up with that to be honest. There's a pretty reliable 300ms delay between you pressing the button and it taking the pic... and curiously enough, if I run a third party camera app, no latency. So I can only assume this is a small software issue and not something they can't fix. To be honest, that slight lag in the shutter is probably the only reason why wife has a S7 in her hands now and not a 5X... it would have driven her insane.

I have a feeling that the camera app takes time to see what kind of picture it needs to take (HDR, or Pano, or whatever) each time before it fires the "shutter" instead of loading that information into memory.

Like you said, you can install almost any other camera app to get around it, so it's not the hardware or interface to the camera module.

I love mine. I went 6P > 5X > 6P > 5X. Settled on the 5X. I love it. No phone is perfect but as Jerry says it's the best bang for buck the moment. Enjoy your 5X. It's excellent.

I still can't work out if reducing screen animation time, on this or any Android phone, actually speeds them up or just *appears* to. Since completing the March update I've been running normal animations and the phone is fast and smooth as silk. Before the update it was fine for me 99% of the time anyway. I might be obsessed about this but I hate waiting or queueing if I don't have to!

My money is on a bug they introduced when coding the camera app in order to disable smart burst on the 5X (which is triggered on the 6P by holding down the shutter for about the same amount of time)

What camera app will you recommend to use instead of the build in app?

Considering getting a 5x instead of S6 (From a price point) , but slow camera is a deal breaker.

I Love my 5X. I came over from the 6P twice. I started with the 6P and wanted a smaller phone, so I picked up a 5X. Then I thought, nope, I really liked the 6P, so I went back to the 6P. That lasted 1 day before I picked up the 5X again and haven't put it down. Now, having said that, there are issues for sure. But there are issues with every phone.

My Issues:
  1. Hotspot won't initialize sometime forcing me to restart.
  2. Camera's slow to respond.
  3. No SD Card, and/or no option larger than 32GB. I've already filled it several times with pictures.
  4. 5.2" screen might be a tad bit small for my eyes. Especially since other phones can get 5.5" crammed into the same shape.
  5. Battery is too small, but if it were bigger, the phone would be bigger.

Things I love:
  1. Smaller form factor. I'm tired of the phablets. I have a phablet for work.
  2. Snappiness, no lag. That's right folks. My 5X has no lag!
  3. Price, Price, PRICE! You cannot beat the value for the money!
  4. Non-slip back. I removed the case and no longer use it. I love the feel of this phone without a case and it's nice and grippy caseless
  5. Also, speaking of cases, it is not a fingerprint magnet like the S series.

Is it perfect? Nope, but it's close enough for me to keep using until HTC puts out the new Nexus later this year.

Oh... That's a tough one. If suggest you try a few. Camera FV-5, Manual Camera, ProShot. Some of those are paid apps.

The reason I'm watching for Google Camera to get improved is, out of all the phones/apps I've used, that HDR+ mode in the Google Camera had produced most of the best quality images I've ever taken.

I wish they'd change the name, is not the same HDR that most all the other deploy, it's a lot different.. Slower to process, but the results are worth it. Had the camera speed been on par with my 6P, which it could, that S7 might get sold

I was skeptical about the phone at first too. I read too many negative comments on here and was really unsure if I should try it. Once I saw it was on sale at Best Buy I figured I would take the plunge and try it out. The phone works great and have had minimal issues. Someone on here told me not to worry about the negative comments on here because this is where people come who are having issues. It's a small amount of people who actually bought the phone.

100% true.... we have a fair amount of selection bias here and it can cloud things a bit. It's like going to a hospital and coming away assuming that everyone in the world has some horrible illness or medical issue. Fact is that the 5X is a brilliant phone. Overall, it's quick, feels great, etc... But like every other phone, it has its share of warts... and people will congregate to discuss them here. And Google has been working to address those issues, most notably in the recent MHC19j update. And I fully expect that they address the Google Camera wonk.

To be perfectly honest, if had to shelf my 6P for a bit for some reason, I would probably be quite happy with using the 5X in its place. And considering its price (even lower if you take advantage of the Fi discount) it's incredible phone for the money.
