New EVO Battery Life Sticky: Please Contribute

battery life on EVO

This was directly from a Sprint store. My battery lasts for over a day now

CALIBRATING A 3 CELL BATTERY (HTC EVO)

1. With the phone in the on position.

Fully charge the battery with the phone on...(until the led turns green)

Once the led turns green, unplug the charger until the led goes off.

After the led goes off, plug the charger back in. When the led turns green, power off the phone. Now... with the phone fully powered off...

1.1 Unplug the charger.

2. Wait until led goes off.

3. Plug charger back in until led turns green. When it turns green, turn on the phone unplug the charger again and go to step 1.

4. Repeat steps 1 and 3, 10 times This may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 mins. per cycle. Typically only about 1 minute though.

Let me know what you think.

This has also been posted on the site its called bumping the batt. Its a temp fix

So I downloaded juice defender and turned off connectivity. I set it to turn on every thirty minutes for one minute. Being that I don't use Facebook or Twitter, it worked best for me. I don't need the constant updates. The good thing is with the network turned off, you can still text and make calls.

Update: I deleted juice defender because it was slowing down my phone. To save battery life I did the following: first I turned off connectivity since you can still receive messages and make calls. Second, I turn it on maybe every hour to check email (have my email set up to sync automatically every hour so no biggy). Finally, I turn connectivity on if imma web browse.

Here is perhaps an interesting observation:

- Today, I exclusively used Opera Mini for web browsing (I find it to be a much faster browser for my area - signal-wise).

- I used my phone much more than normal, browsing, several phone calls, e-reading, playing videos, etc.).

-My battery surprisingly made it through the day (currently at 14 hr. 52 min with two bars remaining).

- Like Garcia_JX, I turned Juice Defender off (to speed up my phone)

- I continued to leave mobile data off (toggle via holding the power button) and turned it on only when actively using data.

My question is this: since Opera Mini doesn't load Flash like Skyfire and the stock browser, does this cause the phone to use less battery? I remember the impact of Flash on battery life was a big reason for Apple's dispute with Adobe.

I will see if tomorrow yields the same results! I forgot to add that most of my data usage was over 3G - not wi-fi as normal.

To disable flash in the stock browser just set plugins to on-demand in the settings. Then areas that flash just show up blank unless you click on them and then the flash loads and begins playing, this will eliminate any battery flash is burning up in the stock browser.

Hello Modplan. I actually enabled flash plug-in on demand for my browsers sometime ago. However, this is the first time I have had such (relatively speaking) strong battery life.

- Today, I listened to mp3s literally all day while at work.

- I surfed again extensively over 3g with Opera Mini and made a few short calls.

I'm currently at 13h & 40 min with 2 bars left. I don't think it is a coincidence.

BTW, I'm completely stock (too scared to root)

The biggest difference for me was turning of the mobile network when I'm not browsing. When I left to the gym, my battery was at 60 percent with the mobile network off. At the gym, I listened to my music for two hours or so. Now, that I'm back from the gym, I kid you not, my battery is still at 60 percent.

Same here. Toggling mobile data is no big deal for me because I can always refresh web based widgets as needed. I'm just glad I can now fully enjoy my phone all day!

I installed a system update last week. Right after that my battery life cut in half.
Yesterday I did a system reset and it looks like I got my battery life back and then some.

Mike

As of late, I haven't had any issues with battery life. Yesterday I even got 12+ hours of moderate to heavy use, including a couple of almost-hour-long game playing sessions, and a 2hour phone call, several other short calls, a WHOLE LOT of texting and emailing, a lil bit of facebooking and gtalking off and on, some note-taking and Bible use. I had passed the 12hour mark when my 15% battery life warning came on. I don't use any special battery monitor...thought about it, but decided against it...and I don't constantly force close "running" apps either. My settings are pretty simple too...

I use WiFi most of the time (whenever available), but I don't have it set to notify me when a network is available.
Bluetooth is off unless I'm using it.
4g is off unless I really need it--and quite honestly, WiFi and 3g where I am is fast enough...I've only used 4g a couple of times in NYC...and I'm rarely there...
I only use the mobile network and/or gps (for navigation only, tho) when I'm out and about, away from WiFi.
My screen timeout is 1 minute.
My screen's lighting is low, maybe about 25-30%, and it's still quite bright.
I do have on all screen animations but I'm not using some outrageous wallpaper either...just the HTC Sense (with the big clock/weather widget on the home screen)
I do have background data and auto sync on, but only for facebook, gmail, and weather. I don't leave myself signed into facebook though. I log in a few times a day (if I'm away from my laptop--which is where I leave it logged in 24/7). I just refresh/sync when i log in. On the rare occasion I leave myself signed in a few hours, then the auto sync is available.
My other emails (aol and yahoo) are set to sync/download every 4 hours. Now I do check them usually before that time and I just manually sync...but that's only if I'm expecting something. My notification settings are on, but no sound or vibrate.
I rarely use vibrate at all...Usually I just put the phone on silent when I'm in a situation requiring my phone to be off or in vibrate.
That's pretty much it though...no major to-do.

For a very short while I had the battery widget that displayed the exact amount of power I had left...but I found myself watching that so much and bugging out about making sure I would be able to charge up, that I couldn't really enjoy my phone. I took that right off! Now I really enjoy my phone, and do what I want without trying to restrict myself. The only batter icon on one of my home screens is the one that tells what and how much power a program has been using since last unplugged. I've got 8 hours unplugged right now and still a lil more than half battery life left. I think if users relax and find what they really need at the moment from their phone, then battery life wouldn't be such a big issue.

Of course, I do know that the standard battery for the Evo is really not equipped to handle all that the Evo can do, but battery innovation has yet to catch up with cell phone innovation nowadays...It's coming though...and hopefully without the extra bulkiness, huh? :-)

I totally agree with you. My device is rooted and I'm getting, what I consider to be "acceptable" battery life now. And I use that term lightly. Acceptable means I can pretty much trash the battery from a full charge and have enough power to last an 8 hour shift at work. But, there's more to life than work. So I have had to make some concessions as to my usage.

AC's own Jesse Potter just posted a review of the Seidio 3500mAh battery. Its a beast indeed.

My Evo lives happily in a Otterbox Commuter case so the added bulk simply won't work for me. But for those who may be interested, I would urge you to read the review and decide. The thing looks huge compared to the stock 1500mAh battery. Once its in the handset things look less grim :-\ Or at least to me. But the up-side is that it effectively doubles the battery power over the stock battery. Which is HUGE. But so is the battery. And I digress.

So my phones "Cell Standby" and "Phone Idle" are at 47 and 46 percent does this affect my battery life is so is there a way i can change that

Technically that means 93% of the time, your phone is doing nothing. If the phone is just idling its normal. There should be other items listed like in this shot

What are the other averages?
