New EVO Battery Life Sticky: Please Contribute

Hey just wanted to post my experience so far I bought the evolution 3 days ago and the battery life was horrid just 15 minutes of music playing caused my battery to drop 30% I hadn't rooted yet due to lack of time but did so last night and flashed calkulins evio 2 Tom and undervolt script with underclocking slightly at 883 I'm getting the same performance while almost tripling my battery life I've been off the charger about 4+ hours and I'm at 68% with some moderate usage in a somewhat weak signal area with everything except Wi-Fi and 4g turned on and brightness set at auto

I just want to share that I can go up to 39 hours with root, but stock ROM and overclocking widget. This is with moderate facebook, text, streaming music, GPS, wifi tethering average 1 hour per day at school and using Wifi instead of 3G. I have done going 3G instead of wifi to test, and I've gotten to 31 hours. I tried to attach a image, but it says to insert the URL of my image, so I cant attach to show you guys my screen shots. before installing the overclocking widget I was getting about 9-12 hours of stock battery life. I always used stick with the stock battery becuase I hate the bulky 3500 ebay battery makes my phone look. I pretty happy with my phone results.

To save battery life, I turn off my mobile network when I am not surfing on the web or when I am at school. I turn on my mobile network every two hours to check my email. It gives me an extra four hours of battery life.

I have to say I brought the extended battery from sprint and I am very pleased with the results. Yesterday I got alil over 17 hours of battery life! This is with regular use (or moderate use) thru out the day. I probably could have gotten 18 hours to be honest.

The extra bulk of the battery is not as bad as i thought. Im just glad because now I can use my phone to its ability and not be worried about battery life. SO glad I got the extended battery! I dont regret it at all!

Also Im not rooted either lol.....wanted to go stock for awhile!

Can you go into more detail please? Which overclocking widget are you using? And are you using it to overclock? underclock? Any auto task killers ect?

Thanks

No task killers! im unsure of the forum rules, (if i can post the website) but you can google "android forum insane battery life" and look for "Root+OverclockWidget". I followed his simple instruction and I so so much thank him. There is only one overclock widget in the Market, but you have to be root. I have stock ROM. I simplely use wifi if it avialable vs 3G. And only use 4G when I do lots of surfing the web. I uncheck "enable always-on mobile data" off. its not necessary to have this on. Turn off auto brightness. I have widgets to turn these off and on. I have tried SETCUP but I didnt like the results. So overclock widget is the best for me. I love the fact that if I forget to charge my phone over night, I would walk up and still have plenty of juice left for my day =)

Good Luck

hey quick question are there any apps or widgets to say for example everytime i turn off the screen it turns off the internet connection?

8 hours,5 minutes since unplugged=83% battery left

Cell Standby-35%
Phone Idle-33%
Android Sys-18%

11 hours 7 minutes since unplugged=73% battery left

Since the first time,I downloaded a few apps from the Market (the main ones being ROM Gripper and Gameboid). Played TMNT Battle Nexus for 30 minutes.....really didn't drain the battery like I thought it would. Probably will do some Facebooking before I go to bed, other than that,I should easily make it past 24 hours unplugged tomorrow morning.

Wow 31 hours! Are you using Setcpu? Since I've done my temp root with Z4 and using setcpu I got 18 hours of battery life yesterday, and I had about 20 percent left! I averaged 8 hours max before. That's 4g use, wifi, gameing, facebook, etc. Stock ROM! It's worth the temp root just for the better battery life and free wifi tether! I'm going to fully root my phone now but for those on the fence try z4. It's incredibly easy and with setcpu you can achieve great battery life!

No, Im using Overclocking widget. A free WIDGET! And turn on 3G when necessary, but Wifi if available vs 3G, and 4G when Im really surfing the net. I advise you to at least do a hardrest on your phone once after that last update we had. I tried SETCPU, was was no were near 31 hours, maybe about 22hours. I'd love to post a screenshot, but dont know how on here, its asking for URL of image. I did post a screen shot over at the android forum site if you like to see it for yourself. And im using default OEM battery. And I love the convience of wifi tether;)

Battery Isues with EVO

Hi All,

Well I have read all this thread and done most and all of the suggestions here but sometimes I still have battery issues. One thing I don't understand though is when I look at my battery usage I see two items that most always use my battery up. The two things are Cell Standby at 42% and Phone Idle at 42%, That's 84% just in those two items. So the ones left are very low usages. So it looks like most of the time my phone is in Standby and Idle but killing my battery.

I plug my phone up each night, unplug it around 5:30am and carry it all day, then by the evening around 5:00pm it's almost to the last part of the green area just before it turns Yellow needing charging. I do have a company phone so that help me not use my EVO except to check emails and other item every so often.

So all this being said I'm wondering what's the point in having this phone if you have to turn all and most things off, not use it very much just to save battery, and not really enjoy all the things the phone will do and has to offer but not worry about killing the battery??

When I use an app I turn it off but if I look in my applications I still see it running under the running tab, so should I force stop all the running apps in the running tap, if so which ones? I know some have to remain running, but which ones can I stop??

Just my take on the subject, any help I would be greatly thankful for.

Get a extended battery. I got the one from sprint and I can go all day on stock. Got 17 hours with moderate use...texting thru out the day...a few phone calls...browse the net alilttle...and watched a few vids on Vevo. I unplugged at 6am and didnt plug back up til i went to sleep around 11pm or so. I had a red bar on the battery then. Some dont like the bigger battery. To me its worth it. I dont regret getting it at all. I love being able to use my phone and not worry about cutting everything off lol.

About 38 hrs. I was around 30% a few hours before, and was probably still around 25%... then I started trying to video chat and that knocked me down to about 10% pretty quickly. The timing of my charge cycles (finishing the charging that first night ~ 3-4am) helped make this extra long. Really little battery use when idle on both nights.

Rooted w/ Set CPU. Stock rom, stock kernel, stock battery, all that.

Time without signal: 3%
Wifi on at all times. No disabling of data/3g when away from wifi.
Bluetooth on at all times
GPS on at all times
Phone idle: 1d 11h 35m 10s
android system: cpu total 43m 8s
Display on 2h 30m
Voice calls 17m 49s

Did a fair amount of texting, must've been at least 100, took a couple pictures, sent a few mms, used as alarm twice and hit snooze ~7 times total, and a bunch of incoming and outgoing emails. Installed a few applications in there too. Decent amount of internet browsing... I'd guess at least 45 minutes. The phone was also paired to my car while driving for ~45 minutes to/from work.

Hello HamRadioNut. The percentages always total to equal 100%. One easy way is to toggle mobile data on/ off as needed. If you use a widget, it is a quick way to have a profound impact. Also the only apps I forced closed were the apps I opened. Others more experienced than I on the forums have explained that Android needs to have something running (or at least acting as a placeholder for quick launching). What is the signal strength in the area that you use the phone most? I rooted and underclocked, etc. but since my home and work area are both low signal areas, my battery life suffers greatly. As mentioned by other posters, wi-fi is a very good option for saving battery and the data speeds are higher as well. Also, I agree that you may need to purchase a larger battery. Lastly, I agree with you in this: Although I'm obsessed with achieving the battery results of many posters, I discontinued my habit of turning everything off. In the end, I have to keep reminding myself to enjoy the phone.

Great post Corey!

I disagree with your comments about GPS and Bluetooth. Yes, when in use, these do affect battery life. However, when Bluetooth and GPS are in an idle state, they use very little power.

Gonna have to disagree with that sir. Unless my phone is broken in some way(which of course is always possilbe though it's only 3 weeks old),that's totally not true. The other day I left my Bluetooth on accidentally. It was on standby on my desk while i was doing something else. When I returned to it later, nearly 30% of the power it had consumed had been used by Bluetooth. I immediately turned it off! Now I should point out that I own no Bluetooth device of any kind aside from the EVO, so there was nothing that it could have been connected to. So sometimes, at least, Bluetooth apparently can suck down monstrous amounts of power without being connected to something. I cant remember how far the battery had dropped exactly but at least 40-50% had been used so it's not like it was at 96% and 1% had been used by bluetooth.

I have found that to be accurate as well. Bluetooth does take a significant amount of charge from the battery. GPS on the other hand doesn't seem to impact my battery charge level at all. The only time GPS takes up battery charge is when it is actively in use (google navigation or other apps that use GPS - and when it is actively in use, you will see the GPS icon at the top of your screen - sorta like a satellite dish).
