I was looking at this:

This is the spec sheet Samsung released and it says they both have micro SD slots.

I'm mostly just considering the USB issue. Being able to plug in a thumb/portable drive is a big plus for me. I'm not clear about why Samsung would make that available on one version but not another that seem almost identical except wrt size, but okay, if that's what they're doing. I just want to be clear on the functionality of each.

Then what's with the slide at their big presentation that says "only for Galaxy Tab 8.9?" Something is confused here -- either that slide, or the specs, or what we're supposed to be understanding from the specs. Other devices have USB ports but don't act as host devices.

I bet the Usb2 on the spec sheets is micro or something. Something to connect to the PC with. The adapter allows USB host.

As for the SD card adapter, I'd bet both come wth uSD, but the connector kit is for full sized SD.

These things look awesome. Good thing i didnt waste my money and rush to get a xoom. Il prob pick up the 10.1 as soon as costco carries it and score a free case plus have a 90 day return policy just in case. Not to mention the cheaper price.

if Sammy is making it thinner, lighter and less costly, then that inevitably means quality will suffer. IMO they are going back to use cheaper parts so they can price it less. The thinner the device, the crappier the speakers as well.

My guess is along these lines as well... The USB 2.0 most likely points to the proprietary Samsung dock connector for PC sync. As for the adapter, it looks to function exactly as the Apple Camera Kit for the iPad... SD adapter and USB adapter for device connections. Only time will tell about the details of it all

there is probably some truth to that, as plastic is both lighter and cheaper than metal (mostly). But its just the game of trade offs...no supermaterials out there yet.

As for price, they talk about the cost of these things to make, but I'd bet there is still several hundred percent mark up on the parts and assembly alone. The rest is development cost recoup, normal profits, and greed. I'm not saying they're robbing us, but in reality, these things could all be a LOT cheaper and they'd still make money on them. Its the cost of early adoption.

Or they are simply cutting their profit margins.

Wasn't the XOOM priced nearly 2X what it cost to make? If this one is also similar, it gives plenty of room to work with for profit margins.

Of course there is plenty of other costs (R&D, marketing, etc) that don't get factored in. Samsung is likely just accepting a longer duration until the units become purely profitable.

I can't imagine them drastically cutting quality, especially since the entire reason they rethought the design was because of the iPad2. Samsung wanted to be a serious contender with the iPad2, they are a smart enough company to know that cutting quality would not help their cause.

Just my .02

if I'm not mistaken(and I could be) the original 10.1 version is still going to launch in Europe? If so, a very interesting review I would like to see is the original version 10.1 vs. the new 10.1 version.

Who cares which is thinner? All marketing bullcrap when they're that small and light as it is. No one will notice a millimeter of difference.

Anyway, I want the 8.9" version. I think its a perfect compromise.

I concur because thats the one goldilocks would want...not too small not too big.

I'm really excited for the 8.9 tab. I think that the size is great because its not as cramped as the 7 but still just has alot of room. I hope that those touchwiz widgets can be taken off. Eother that or i hope the tablet friendly version of the tablet version of launcherpro comes put soon.

Is there a microSD on the tab? The specs sheet say so but there's that sd conncetion kit. I need to jnow before i decide ehich version to get. I dont mind grtting the cheaper 16G one with a 32G sd card.
