Hi All

I'm off travelling for over 5 weeks soon, and I was thinking of getting a tablet for these purposes:

  • read e-books
  • transfer some of my photos from my camera to the tablet via USB as a backup if poss
  • watch some movies via USB flash drive if poss
  • View pdf's etc
  • connect to wifi and surf internet
  • Skype the family and friends

The Nexus 7 32GB sounds like it will suit my needs, as I've got an Android smartphone (Galaxy S2).

I went into JB Hifi and liked the size of it but the guys at JB's said even if I get the OTG cable I wont be able to transfer files or play movies?

Is there any apps I can download to support this or should I look at something else?

Oh, and I dont need a rear camera either, esp when I've got my camera phone.

These guys are wrong! There is an extremely popular (paid) app called Nexus Media Importer that works on unrooted devices and does everything you wish for.

For PDFs, I would recommend ezPDF Reader. It has a text reflow feature that greatly improves readability on the small Nexus screen.

I don't know if it meets your needs but the 32gb N7 is $199 now & the new N7 won't be that much better or different.

bull****. The new device is going to have twice the ram and a better processor. It is going to be a very noticeable increase in speed. I have the N4 and the N7 and the new N7 will have similar specs to the N4 and I can very much tell a difference.

OP: Do not buy a Nexus 7 yet because the next one will probably be announced Wednesday and will be probably be available right away.

I bought a Nexus 7 today, the 32 GB version for $200 and I love it so far. I didn't want to wait for the new one. I would rather save some money and get the 7 today. I really will only user it for reading, watching movies, and some work productivity stuff. So I don't need it to be top of the line in specs.

I'm waiting for the new one to be announced first. But I am interested getting a Nexus 7 for sure. If I'm not mistaken, the new one would be any where from $20-$40 more expensive, right? It's still cheaper than the iPad Mini. If it has some respectable specs then I won't have to wait for the iPad Mini to be announced.

Great, thanks guys. Well the new google nexus seems to be worth waiting for. Though in Australia it will probably be released after I head off to the states on holiday. Thinking of either just getting a first gen (cheaper hopefully) as I think it will still suit me or buy a new wifi one over there for a bit extra. The only thing is will it have an US warranty only or is it an international warranty? And if I do buy one over there where's the best place?

If you plan on getting one here in the states, probably the best place is to stop by a BestBuy store for one. You can try it out and see how it stacks up against other tablets. And I have no idea about the warranty. Guess I will have to do some research on that.

Read Ebooks. Yes
Transfer photos. Yes
Watch movies via USB. Yes (look for Nexus Media Importer in the Google Play store.)
View PDFs. Yes
Connect to wifi. Very yes.
Skype. Yes. (Wifi required)

If you're planning to watch movies via USB drive, Get a 16GB model. It will be a lot cheaper.
