This phone may sound like a good deal for $300, but let's look at the Huawei Glory Cricket is coming out with. It has a 4" screen with 854x480 pixels, 1.4 GHz Snapdragon processor (the same as what's in the Triumph), an 8 MP camera with LED flash, Android 2.3.3 which Huawei promises will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich when it comes out, and 1900 mAH battery. It is also only 9.7 mm thick. Once you put aside the HDMI out, extra .1" of screen, and front facing camera the Triumph has, the Glory blows it out of the water. Bar those few cut corners, the Glory is an overall better phone. Want to know the price point for the Glory? $299 without a contract. The Motorola Triumph is just a rebranded Huawei Ideos X6, so both of these phones are made by Huawei. Why is it that Cricket can manage to sell a much better spec'd phone for the same price that the Triumph is(/may be) being sold for when both phones are made by the same manufacturer?
You also have to consider that if this is the price of the Triumph, it will cost twice as much as the LG Optimus V. The last time VM had this $150 - $300 price difference between phones was when the LG Rumor Touch and the Blackberry Curve first came out. The $150 transition here was from a touch screen messaging phone to a full smartphone (which wasn't bad at the time). This time around, the $150 transition is from arguably the best mid-range Android phone on the market to an Android phone that is towards the bottom of the list of high-end phones. The truth is, the Optimus is an absolute steal for the price. The Triumph can't compete at just "pretty good." Yes the Triumph outspecs the Optimus, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that the Triumph is twice as good.
The perfect price for the Triumph, in my opinion, would have been $249. Once you look around at other prepaid options, you'll realize that $299 is actually a relatively bad spot. With the $150 jump from the Optimus to the Triumph with only the unwanted (and for a good reason) Intercept in between and the superior Glory coming in at the same price point, the Triumph isn't likely to be as big of a success as everyone is hoping. At $249, $100 more still sounds like quite a bit, but if the Intercept stayed there it could bridge the gap and make it seem a lot smaller to buyers. To me, that sounds like the most useful thing VM could do with the Intercept now that everyone knows it sucks. And another advantage to the $249 price mark is how close it is to the iPod Touch. People looking for a PMP that actually competes with the iPod Touch could use the Triumph as a music player. There is just so much more potential for this phone at $249. What baffles me though is why Virgin insisted on rebranding the Ideos X6 and creating another middle man to pay if they were aiming to keep the price low. The Ascend on Cricket and Huawei proved that a phone can still sell well even if it's made by some company most people have never heard of. I'm sure cutting out Motorola would be able to easily save $50.
But Virgin Mobile did say they never actually confirmed a price. If we're lucky, this $300 price tag could just be Best Buy contradicting their name.
