New Virgin phone, Motorola Triumph | JULY19 | $300

Re: New Virgin phone, Motorola Triumph | JULY19?

I sure hope it's cheaper at radioshack or vm's site. I was really hoping for $250.

Best Buy is always the first to raise the price and usually has the highest, so we may get it for $250 if you bide your time. Not that it will be much of an issue since BB will likely get it last as well.

The one thing I'm waiting to see is how well the touch sensitive buttons perform. If they are anything at all like the Intercept it could be an absolute deal breaker. I love that the Optimus V has actual physical buttons on it. I can use them easily without even looking at it and it gives nice tactile feedback.

The intercept is still the only phone I've ever used that had issues with the touch buttons like that. All of the other moto, samsung, HTC, and LG phones with them seemed to work just fine.

Go to Verizon and look the retail prices for there phones. This phone is a deal.

Very true agree 100% but most V users are cheap and are spoiled by this cheap plan to see past the fact that the triumph is probably going to be worth the 300 dollar price tag, hell if they got rid of the prepaid smartphones most users would be back on flip phones,to complain about how much this bargain carrier charges for the Triumph is pretty sad, seeing what the big 4 charge for a non contract smartphone.

Very true, and 100% agree.

Good the more people that wont be buying this phone the more stocks there are for those that will. Cheap plan doesn't automatically = to cheap phones. High end phones + cheap plans = my nirvana.

That's good to know. Still waiting till next year to even consider replacing my OV, but I'll be very curious to read the initial reviews on the Triumph.

If battery life is better ill for sure get the triumph

I don't know if it will be bigger phone with more bells and whistles usually will eat just as much or more then a stock V. With a rooted V and my ROM I get awesome battery life vs the stock v

Grrr touch buttons?
I had those on my Shuttle, those alone are a deal breaker.

For those complaining about batteries on the V, I managed a full 48 hours (7% remaining) with light use on Harmonia the other day. Bloatware stinks, I highly doubt the Triumph will manage any better than a stock OV.

I agree all that crapware they are going to have on it is going to just kill the battery life on it. Now if its a nice clean stock ROM (doubt it!) then it may have decent battery life.

This phone may sound like a good deal for $300, but let's look at the Huawei Glory Cricket is coming out with. It has a 4" screen with 854x480 pixels, 1.4 GHz Snapdragon processor (the same as what's in the Triumph), an 8 MP camera with LED flash, Android 2.3.3 which Huawei promises will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich when it comes out, and 1900 mAH battery. It is also only 9.7 mm thick. Once you put aside the HDMI out, extra .1" of screen, and front facing camera the Triumph has, the Glory blows it out of the water. Bar those few cut corners, the Glory is an overall better phone. Want to know the price point for the Glory? $299 without a contract. The Motorola Triumph is just a rebranded Huawei Ideos X6, so both of these phones are made by Huawei. Why is it that Cricket can manage to sell a much better spec'd phone for the same price that the Triumph is(/may be) being sold for when both phones are made by the same manufacturer?

You also have to consider that if this is the price of the Triumph, it will cost twice as much as the LG Optimus V. The last time VM had this $150 - $300 price difference between phones was when the LG Rumor Touch and the Blackberry Curve first came out. The $150 transition here was from a touch screen messaging phone to a full smartphone (which wasn't bad at the time). This time around, the $150 transition is from arguably the best mid-range Android phone on the market to an Android phone that is towards the bottom of the list of high-end phones. The truth is, the Optimus is an absolute steal for the price. The Triumph can't compete at just "pretty good." Yes the Triumph outspecs the Optimus, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that the Triumph is twice as good.

The perfect price for the Triumph, in my opinion, would have been $249. Once you look around at other prepaid options, you'll realize that $299 is actually a relatively bad spot. With the $150 jump from the Optimus to the Triumph with only the unwanted (and for a good reason) Intercept in between and the superior Glory coming in at the same price point, the Triumph isn't likely to be as big of a success as everyone is hoping. At $249, $100 more still sounds like quite a bit, but if the Intercept stayed there it could bridge the gap and make it seem a lot smaller to buyers. To me, that sounds like the most useful thing VM could do with the Intercept now that everyone knows it sucks. And another advantage to the $249 price mark is how close it is to the iPod Touch. People looking for a PMP that actually competes with the iPod Touch could use the Triumph as a music player. There is just so much more potential for this phone at $249. What baffles me though is why Virgin insisted on rebranding the Ideos X6 and creating another middle man to pay if they were aiming to keep the price low. The Ascend on Cricket and Huawei proved that a phone can still sell well even if it's made by some company most people have never heard of. I'm sure cutting out Motorola would be able to easily save $50.

But Virgin Mobile did say they never actually confirmed a price. If we're lucky, this $300 price tag could just be Best Buy contradicting their name.

figured it would be around $300, still hoping for $250 but can't see it being less than $300 really. not a big fan of BB...hate their prices and their sales reps so ill be patient and wait things out till we get some real reviews on the triumph before i do anything too crazy. ;]

I'm waiting on reviews because honestly, I don't know about their Android phones, but Motorola phones in the past have sucked!!! So I want to know every little detail about this phone before I go and spend 300 on it.

Well said, I agree on the point that the price seen on the best buy page could just be them speculating on the retail price. I guess we are just going to have to wait until the 19th and see if that official or if it was some kind of place holder.

some good points and all but this is a very apples and oranges comparison you're doing. you can't really compare the two phones that much since the Glory comes out in NOVEMBER ffs! it's practically a 2012 phone, you can't compare that to a Q2 2011 phone accurately. by then, who knows how much the price of the Triumph will be let alone what other new offerings VM might have that will potentially blow those supposed specs out of the water. also, the differences you mentioned are pretty crucial selling points for some. .1" of screen might be small yes, but front facing camera and 720p recording/hdmi out are pretty big features, almost standard for high end android phones nowadays, to be missing on a phone to be released nearly at the end of this year. and we still don't know the official price of the Triumph either, best buy more often than not does indeed contradict their name. and last but not least, it's two different carriers as well, so while one might be better than the other hardware wise, you still have to factor in the differences between the companies that make said hardware worth it's salt. The Glory might be "better" on paper, but i wouldn't likely switch to Cricket in order to take advantage of those improvements. one thing i definitely agree on is that the Triumph will likely NOT be twice as good as the Optimus V, thus negating to warrant a price tag twice as big. however, both of these attributes, price and performance, still remain to be truly seen. my two pennies. :]

Very well written,we do not know yet if your statements on the triumph are true seeing it is not available yet,as for Cricket having a better android phone i would just as soon use the cheapest phone VM offers, then anything cricket offers as their service is very limited and plan sucks,,and, and the V debuted as an entry level smartphone, and that is what it is,not saying it's bad just spec wise 2 years behind the times,as i see it the triumph has bigger screen, way more internal storage,a more modern and faster CPU,a higher megapixel camera with flash, and wireless N capable,i think a lot of people are upset that they cannot install custom Roms on it and trying to knock the phone before it is even available,i will wait for a review before i make the leap.
