New Virgin phone, Motorola Triumph | JULY19 | $300

I know I've said this more than once in this thread but maybe development slightly more important than the hardware.

What if we all get this phone and the bootloader never gets unlocked?
We wouldn't have root. We could be stuck with bloatware on our phones. A locked Motorola phone on VM is bad because VM stock ROMs are horrible.

Wait a second. Maybe I'm over over exaggerating. Stock on the OV isn't that bad. It's just the boot sound. I can't stand the boot sound. My main point about that is I don't want the fact that I have Virgin Mobile advertised through the boot sound, ringtones, awful websites and useless apps which are all part of this annoying boxed set we call bloatware.
VM has done their part to ensure we don't get any manufacturer bloatware. They should go the extra step and remove all the carrier related content. The iphone doesn't have any carrier bloatware and look at how many of those they sell.

I really wish VM would listen to that. Sadly we know they won't and don't even care. If I could have one request from a carrier that would be it.

If we can't make development progress we would be stuck with a locked bootloader with no opportunities for bloatware removal, tethering, and custom ROMs or kernels. Bringing up an idea of CM or 2.3 is completely out of the question.

I may be out of my mind but think about if being possibly stuck on stock with VM is worth it.

Droid X had a locked bootloader correct? And an e-fuse? And they still have custom roms. We just need devoted devs.

Real simple don't like it don't buy it,or go to a contract phone,as i look at it we are lucky to have such cheap fairly reliable service, with by far the best line of Android phones on the prepaid market.

One thing I just thought of is lack of accessories. The great thing about the Optimus V is the plethora of accessories out there because it's just another version of the same phone (or same dimensions) as others phones on Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc.

Is the Triumph a version of anything else or a brand new build? I hate clumsy universal car mounts and makeshift screen protectors. This would probably keep me from moving to the Triumph.

Yeah one huge thing for me is waiting until ZAGG or the other similar companies come out with their screen protectors. Not going to go the thick plastic ebay route.

With the V I had bought an InvisibleShield and Body Glove case while I waited for the Radio Shacks near me to get in the first batch.

Really Nice post. I think people are so struck on the fact its a bigger bette phone they dont care about the real reason to own a android phone and that is the ability to customize it.

The "e-fuse" was a myth. But yes it HAS a locked bootloader. As with every moto phone released since then. However the evil ClockworkMod team found a way to "bootstrap" and get around the locked bootloader. There is custom roms on the DX, and they recently have a working version of CM7 BUT, all roms still use the factory moto kernel.

Dude your fanboi'ism of the triumph is growing old. The guy made good points, but the fact you cant see past "ZOMG HUGE SCREEN FAST PROCESSOR RAWR MOTO PHONE", these are legitimate concerns.

The phone hasnt even released yet and you think its the best thing since sliced bread. And everytime somebody says something negative you come along and basically tell them they are stupid. Believe me when I say this, I will be the first person to laugh and mock you when the triumph is released and you are crying cause you cant use a theme or a custom rom on it. I will be sure to link you every single one of your "ZOMG THE TRIUMPH IS THE BESTEST PHONE EVAAAAAAAAA" posts.

No different then yout fanboyism over custom Roms, and seeing this is the general section and did not get off topic OH WELL.some of see a good phone spec wise, where we do not have to install custom roms to get that extra performance out of the phone, never said it was the best phone going, but for the cheap monthly service it will serve me well.if you expect more you pay more, plain and simple.

? About the Motorola Triumph

Okay so it has a bootloader correct or we dont know that yet? Since there is one on it does that mean that we cant make custom roms right? I know most people dont like MotoBlur but if i tried to put it on Motorola Triumph like some of the apps from the Droid X it would be unsuccessful right?

If you can change the files in the system partition/folder, then you can install (pretty much) whatever custom rom you want. This is usually accomplished by gaining root access. A locked bootloader means that you can't flash a custom recovery. Without a custom recovery, you can never change the kernel. That limits the changes you can implement via the rom. So while you might be able to have CM7 visually as a rom, you won't be able to have the CM7 kernel mods that might improve battery life or fix driver bugs.

All of the moto phones have had locked boot loaders so far. There was a post by moto that they would release unlocked phones later in the year. I doubt it applies to this phone, but you never know.

Remember that every Windows Mobile phone ever made had a locked bootloader? BTW When will this thread get moved to the Triumph forum?

They might me more prone to apply that to this phone before they would a brand new dual core major carrier phone. With this phone being contracted out and being a "cheap" prepaid phone, and with virgin mobile being "dedicated" to giving users the pure android experience with all the customization the customer would want (as they've said before). We could possibly get an unlocked bootloader.

Except rooting. Virgin doesn't like for you to go that far apparently.

No carrier "likes" you to root. That usually end up with free hotspot, which is a breach of contract. Virgin mobile more so because they don't allow hotspot at all. Plus there's always the risk of bricking then returning the phone. They don't like that either. Locked bootloader or not, I'm still buying the phone.

My views too. I'm not exactly sure HOW to root anyways. I'm still trying to learn that. So whether you can root this phone or not I don't care. Plus Virgin knows there's tons of people that don't care either. This could be somebody's first Android, so they don't even know what a locked bootlader means. Heck, I'm not even sure. But one thing is for sure. This is a sweet phone. For Virgin its high end. Compared to other phones on other carriers? Not so much. For me? Its perfect.

Make sure to add some Monster Cables to connect the phone to the PC.

Despite building a rom, I have actually recommended quite a few times not to root or rom, It's not for everyone and each person should weigh the pros and cons before doing it (as well as lots of reading about it).

However, you couldn't get me back on the stock rom on this phone and I really hesitate to do the same on the Triumph.

Sorry, but I know very well how poorly written some of those apps are and how much battery they drain. The Triumph has a smaller battery, wireless N and Virgin bloat, which means less battery life, I don't care how good Motorola is at optimizing a phone, there is no way you will get more than a day from the Triumph under light to medium use. I remember those days on the OV and won't go back to it. I'm currently getting more than double the battery life I was on stock and that alone was worth it.

Maybe they're softening up on this stance.

Good to see E-Thuggery is alive and well.
