New VOIP option for GV - single app solution: GrooVe IP

Ok version 1.2.3 has been posted to the android market. Supports both old and new namespaces so outgoing calls should work...again. Amazon still has 1.2.1 which should also be able to make calls.

Just thought I'd let you know that my mom is very happy with GrooVe IP. I had a new Tracfone phone laying around that I had gotten free over a year ago. I bought a $20 card for it and registered it using her zip code to get a local number for her. Then I ported that number to Google Voice for another $20. Ta-da! Now she can call me with a local number! (NW MN doesn't have any local numbers via Google Voice.) I figure it was money well spent so that we can talk whenever without using all of my plan minutes. Granted, I have 1200, but... I can easily talk for a couple of hours at a time. ;) Thanks for such a great app!

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you and your mom are happy with the app.

Thank you very much for this app I use it daily. I am about to buy it for my other OV my wife uses. Not sure if this has been asked yet but can this deal with txts on the Google voice number?

Hi,

Glad you like the app. It only handles voice right now. But you can get the official Google Voice app and use that for text messages.

For some reason Groove IP will not ring my phone until right before GV goes to voice mail.
I use Whistle phone to test it and it will ring 5 times and then on the 6th just before GV voice mail picks up Groove IP rings once, also tested it with the same results using a cell.

I'm assuming you're on WiFi? You can get an app called Advanced WiFi lock and that should fix the issue. Or if you email me snrb.labs@gmail.com, I can send you a version that adds a new troubleshooting checkbox that may help.

Yep wifi, I will give that a shot, I recently bought a new router and it would drop the connection with the phone so this should fix that too. The old router did not seem to have that problem.

Thanks so far so good

Just a heads up Amazon app store has this for 1.99 right now

Only issue with saving the few dollars is amazon is notoriously slow about approving updates.... Worse than RIM approving stuff for the playbook!

It is an Evo4G running Salvage Mod.

When you make a call the GV icon goes red and the dialer comes back? That generally means the app is crashing. We've seen that happen on certain roms, they don't seem to implement some method we call which causes the app to crash. If it is crashing, the only work around would be to change the rom.

Does the app ring at all? Or do you get a message saying please try again? There are some other troubleshooting tips available on our webpage http://www.snrblabs.com/snrb/Apps/GrooveIP/FAQ.aspx

It says Connected and then goes back to dialer. It also happens with SipDroid. I will have to try another rom.

Thanks

Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. As I may possibly be moving to a different country, I wanted to make sure I had a VOIP program installed and working. Could not have been simpler. Installed, set up google voice, set up Groove IP following instructions under the help option, and done. Tested on wifi and 3g, perfect. Also have GV for texts with a widget on homescreen. Amazing.

My only question was not quite app related..

When creating the google voice account, it asked me if I wanted to port my number to them, or create a new one. I would ideally like to simply port it and be done with it, but it said something that threw up a red flag that it might remove it from my service provider. So I simply created a new number.

My question is basically would porting my number to GV remove my service, or any complications for that matter, with VM?

As far as I know, when you port your number to GV (or any "phone provider") then you're not able to use that number on the previous service.

For example: you have (123) 456-7890 on Verizon, switch to sprint and port the number over. You now have the number on Sprint...but if you wanted Verizon service again you'd have to get a new number.

The same basic principle is in effect with GV. When you move (123) 456-7890 to GV, it is then GV's number, not VM's. So if you wanted to continue to use VM's services...you'd need another number.

So now we just have to get past that pesky 3 hour limit GV puts on calls. At least it's helpful to know how long you've been on the phone (I've been on long enough for GV to hang up on me 3 times lol)
