New VOIP option for GV - single app solution: GrooVe IP

Took a look at the new logcat. Don't see a crash anymore. But don't see any obvious errors either. Nothing that indicates why it only worked for a short while. Does increasing the mic buffer to x-large change anything?

Also don't do both Audio Routing and Audio Processing. Should be only one or the other.

I'm at work now, want to keep testing in the same conditions, so I will test when I get home on my wifi network.

Pull down todays update. It adds echo canceler support. Enable echo cancelling and that should get rid of the echo. You may have to try different tail sizes. The 200-400 worked for most devices. But some we tested used 100-300.

Thank you for your reply. After the update now I'm getting an echo of my voice on my end which was not happening before. I tried the settings you suggested but they all had an echo on both sides of the phone. On the previous version, the receiver was the only one hearing their voice echo and now it's on my end also. Any suggestions?

Did you change any settings? Are you on the same network? The default behavior of the app should be exactly the same as before.

For LG Optimus V

Again thanks for your reply.
Ok things seem to be going better.

The Issue was during the testing.
While testing (over wifi) If the receivers phone is near by (about 20 ft or less) I receive an echo on my optimus of my voice..

This echo is only present If the person I'm talking to is nearby.

The settings I seem to be getting the best results with are as follow.

Audio/Echo Settings-Echo cancellation checked
Audio/Echo Settings- Post Processing checked
Audio/Echo Settings- Echo Tail- 100ms-300ms
Microphone gain is on -3

Take into considerations that the person that helped me with the testing is my younger brother and he suffers from a severe case of the dumbs. He said with these settings he heard his voice echo almost nothing at all. Here and there a minor echo but nothing too annoying. Its a little late so I'll have to test this out on a friend tomorrow.

If anyone has different settings that is working well on their Lg Optimus V please let me know... Thank

The echo of your own voice when the receiver phone is near you isn't something an app setting will fix. What's happening is the receiver phone's mic is picking up your voice and transmitting it. You then hear it through your phone.

Why don't you throw an ad based version out there for us poor folks, I would buy it but I refuse to register my bank card with Google and they will not use my VM balance to buy apps.
Just seeing this post mentioning registering a bank card with Google. Apparently Google has my credit card info, and I don't know how that is possible, I never registered it with them.

Groove IP is the first app I have bought, and when I purchased it last night, I was expecting to pay with PayPa. If there were pay options, I sure didn't see it. How surprised was I when my receipt was emailed to me showing the last 4 digits of my credit card??!! I never gave Google my credit card information. How did they get it, and charge my card without my consent? I'm very concerned about this. Sure this was only $4.99 and I hope well worth it, but I'm pretty concerned.

Why were you surprised? You had to hit "Buy Now" on a screen that said "Pay for this with Visa XXX-####".

At somepoint you must have made a purchase from a vendor that used Google Checkout, thus creating a Google Checkout account. Go to google.com/checkout and you can see your purchase history.

New Version 1.2.1

Version 1.2.1:
- New accessibility option to allow the Search button to hang up calls (under miscellaneous->accessibility)
- Option to break out missed call notifications so each missed call is a new notification with caller id instead of just the missed call count
- Allow + to be dialed from the GrooVe IP dialer
- Add more options for dialing from the native dialer
- New echo canceler option to auto detect the echo tail setting
- Add images to the menu buttons

I have it waiting to be installed but didnt get to it yet, really interested in the search button hang up.

I have google voice forwarding to the VM phone and to google talk.

Can someone post a summary of the right google voice settings to get the voicemails on GV?
Also, is there a consensus on the best groove-ip settings (on a froyo rom)

i can use Groove IP just fine over Wifi...but on VM's 3G it stutters like crazy for the outgoing stream if i call any number (land or mobile) except another Google Voice number...then there's no stutter.

Is this working for others or is VOIP over 3G just not going to work properly?

It probably varies from person to person because 3G can fluctuate so much, but I find GrooveIP breaks up too much over 3G to be acceptable.

So, I stick to using it over WiFi at home and regular minutes when on the go. Since it suits my schedule each month I don't have any reason to worry about improving 3G performance.

Yes...agreed, and not only Groove IP, but i've also tried Skype, Sipdroid, CSipSimple, Mizudroid and others...all pretty much the same over 3G although one can get plus/minus improvements with different codecs and various settings...so i suspect it's a bigger problem than i'm qualified to solve.

Since the quality seems just fine for my purposes for inbound voice on 3G...but the outbound always breaks badly...i think either Virgin is interfering, or perhaps there's some kind of codec thing going on with Google Voice that i've read allusions to but don't really understand.

What i'd really wanted to do today was to set up the free VPN that pbxes.org says they offer even for free accounts, to see if that exposed the VOIP traffic being throttled/changed via VM, but i was unable to connect to it.

Thanks for your reply! Others?

- Add support for contact specific ringtones
- Change notification icon to indicate in-call state

- Make license check more tollerant of Android license server errors

Groove IP stopped working???
I am running 1.2.1 because I got it from amazon
anyway it looks ok the icon is green, but when I try to dial out I hear no ringtone.
Too, I tried moving it to sd card and then moved it back, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, rebooted phone, pulled the battery and rebooted phone, still no go.

Google changed something on their server this morning. 1.2.2 has the change we had to make to get it working, earlier versions won't be able to make outgoing calls. If you purchased from Amazon, email us at snrb.labs@gmail.com we can give you a temporary version until Amazon rolls out the update.

OBTW great app, much more stable and easier to setup than sipdroid+GV.
It must be good it is the only app I have paid for, usually I just wait for Amazon freebies

And now Google has undone the change they made on Friday. So 1.2.2 won't work but earlier versions will. I posted 1.2.1 on our facebook page. Will be updated to 1.2.3 that will support either way in case they change again.
