Newbie help question UK regarding contracts

Hi Folks,
I find phone contracts confusing perhaps someone will help me. I'm due to upgrade on Vodafone at end of this month but I've noticed that the prices for flagship devices are really high. Is it possible to change provider on upgrade and start a new contract with same number. I've noticed new contracts cheaper.

I'm probably looking at the S8. I had an s6 which was unfortunately stolen so I replaced with a LGG4 which had the loop problem but overall is a solid phone. Is Giffgaff any good. I usually just go to Carphone Warehouse and upgrade. Unfortunately it seems a bit like Sky etc that if you're loyal to a company their are no perks and upgrading costs more than starting a new contract.

GiffGaff deal on the S8 alone without sim is pretty rubbish, tbh. £30.48 x 24 + £25 up front, or £639 outright.

Yep but that seems great compared to sticking with Vodafone via Carphone Warehouse. Costs about 50 odd quid per month for 4 gig data I need. Thanks for the posts by the way very helpful and I'd be grateful if you find any deals and post on here.
