Nexus 5 Battery Drain >20% Overnight

Yes, I do. Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Skype, Snapchat, Tango, and WhatsApp (though the first three in this list are really the only ones I actually use). As I've stated before though, these apps have all been on the phone since day 1, yet the problem only appears intermittently and seems to be more tied to the OS of the phone and/or OK Google hotword detection being turned on (well on the latter, that's the only correlation I could come up with before I did the factory reset).

Look....I get that a phone with Facebook installed is going to drain battery a bit quicker than one that doesn't have it installed but:

a) I've never had a noticeable battery drain from these kind of apps on my other smartphones

b) this is a very powerful, top of the line device and I'd like to use it as such....as opposed to avoiding certain features or apps simply because I'm so paranoid of losing precious battery life. Though having said that, I do take just about every other precaution aimed at conserving power usage (brightness kept low, only sync and download via Wi-Fi, no haptic feedback, no Google Now/Google+ services, location in battery saving mode, etc.)

Not to say I wouldn't be willing to try erasing some of these apps in an attempt to isolate the issue but I really don't think it is necessary or the root of my problem. And of you I'd ask: why would an app like Facebook cause no problems for a week or two and then out of absolutely nowhere decide to just start raping my battery life? Then again, why would any problem whether it be with the OS or a particular app behave in this manner? My iPhone 4 with a three year old battery ran all these apps and more, was on a higher brightness setting, was tweaked with all sorts of jailbreak mods, and pushed information from apps at a more frequent interval....yet still had none of the battery drain issues I am experiencing with this device.

In order to truly determine what is going on, I recommend you do a factory reset and see how the phone operates for a good week before installing all those social media apps. They are definitely known to be battery suckers (not just brain suckers).

My N5 doesn't have any social media apps installed, and it has never exhibited this type of battery drain behavior.

All I have as far as social stuff is Twitter and it doesn't drain my battery but I usually only get occasional notifications throughout the day.

I get basically zero notifications from all apps mentioned other than Facebook which I might get 0-5 notifications per day.

Even if you don't get many notifications or even if you havent used the app for a long time, they could still be running in the background (I think there is a developer option to turn that off (I think.))

Do you have Dropbox installed? Do you have auto photo synch enabled? If yes to both, try disabling auto photo synch in Dropbox.

I've been getting really good battery life on my phone! During mg work hours,I would say I'm a moderately heavy user. I browse the web, play a game or 2, search for new apps and texting with my screen set to 40% brightness( setting it to auto brightness kills my battery! Constantly fluctuating under the same light setting) I generally leave work with 50-60% battery. I would get less battery with my HTC Evo LTE on battery saver mode! Considering this screen is a lot brighter and has double the cores...Im pretty impressed! I also did notice that my Google play service is 4.1.32 so that might have something to do with it.

Yes, I do have Dropbox installed. Auto photo sync enable on Wi-Fi only. I really don't like that so many of these suggestions involve killing features that I enjoy using, but I'll try toggling those settings if I come across this problem again (which I most likely will).

Mine will work for a few days then out of left field android os will go off the deep end and be at like 50+ % and drain the battery

Disregard my Dropbox suggestion. Seemed to work then three days later my battery quick discharge issue returned.

If you are rooted. Greenify is your friend. :D

If you aren't rooted double and triple check your settings for your apps, wifi, and gps. (And follow your fellow AC users ideas) ;)

Not rooted. Definitely have done more than double and triple checking my settings....still inconsistent at night. I'm living with it for the time being though.

I too am in the overnight battery drain (OBD?) club. I used to have a Galaxy Nexus. Those of you familiar with that phone know what a battery hog it was/is. I am using my N5 basically the same way (give or take an app or two here and there, and 4.4.2 vs 4.2.2) and I've been getting 50% battery loss overnight where I never had with the GNexus. I'm not rooted, using Dalvik, no Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram or other social app like that installed (just not really into that social media thing), strong wifi and cell signals. It's showing things like Android OS, Android System, cell standby, phone idle, Google Play Services as the biggest battery users overnight. Very strange.

I rebooted a few days ago and it lessened the overnight drain to only about 12%, which is still above normal, but livable. It was like that for a couple of days, and then it went back to losing 50% overnight again. Finally bit the bullet and did a factory reset. Let's see how it goes.

Yet another member of Club OBD. Last night the phone was at 92% charge. This morning it was at 38%.

I've just called Google, who are sending me a replacement phone. They say it'll arrive in 7-10 days.
Once I've reinstalled everything I'll post my findings.

Update: factory reset did not eliminate the problem. After the reset, it didn't occur for one or two nights, then it started happening again. After trying some more tweaks, I finally punted, called up Google, and accepted their offer of a replacement. Hopefully the replacement will not have the issue. Will check back in after I'm up and running with the replacement and I have something to report.

Has anyone with this problem gotten their replacement yet? If so, please tell me that that has eliminated the problem for you once and for all...

I'm about to do the same....only question now is: do I get a black or a red one for my replacement?

In my case, they just reordered my orig. order (black), which I'm happy with. I didn't ask for a different color though, so I don't know what they would say.

My replacement is delayed, being stuck in KY due to weather.

I got 16 hours yesterday and I charge my phone over night all night.

Not that you want to do it as a long term solution, but what appears to work in my case is putting the phone in airplane mode. Loss is 1-3% when I do that. Of course, given how intermittent the issue is, maybe if I do that enough nights it will come back in any event. Curious to see if those with replacement phones have the same issue.

Hey guys,

I just switched over to Android from my iPhone 5, and while I love the OS, the battery life on this thing is pretty atrocious. I'm not sure if I'm just spoiled from my time with the iPhone, or if I have a defective unit, but even after performing a factory reset, my battery life appears to be draining about 1% every 1 minute during fairly normal usage (no streaming, processor intensive apps, etc). On top of this, over the past two nights, I have woken up to find my battery has been drained by ~20% by just sitting on my nightstand.

After the factory reset, the only app I reinstalled was Facebook, so I'm pretty much ruling out any apps as the culprit here. I know there have a been many articles/threads about specific functionality you can disable to maximize battery life - and believe me I have tried some to no avail - yet I am pretty against the notion that I need to essentially disable the functionality of my phone to get respectable performance out of the unit.

I'm talking to Google support right now but thought I'd post here as well to see if 1) other people have been experiencing issues like these and 2) if there is anything I am overlooking here that might be the source of the issue.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Mine was the same in the beginning. Gradually stabilized after Google Services did its thing. Now I get a day and a half.
