Nexus 5 battery replacement

Between 6:30 AM and 10:30 AM, I travelled around town, but I never used the phone. It was never out of my pocket, so the apps were just running in the background. The battery went from 100% to 49%.

My best SOT so far has been 3:30 and down to about 12%, but these past two weeks I've not stuck to my regular patterns/places, so much of the time I was not on WiFi, or turned on the hotspot, or moved constantly (thus negating Doze), and so on.

I was on about 1:30 SOT at the airport yesterday and was down to 64% after some Maps use (everything on LTE).

Wow. This thread has been quite a disappointing read for me. My GF uses Straight Talk, and her Galaxy S3 (stop laughing) wasn't getting her through the day, even with a battery replacement, and I caught her looking at other phones. I saw a "deal of the day" for a Nexus 5, and while it isn't state of the art, it's twice the phone that the S3 is, and at only $150, I suggested it. So far, she's been very happy with it, and I haven't really pressed her on the subject of battery life, but the next chance I get, I'll try to check her battery life and SOT. Although she isn't complaining about battery life now, I know it's a sealed system, and I was wondering about the options I'd have if she did need a replacement. Now I know the options are not so good. :-(

Edit: On the bright side, while it doesn't measure up to current flagship phones in benchmark scores, the Nexus 5 is still a very admirable phone in both looks and performance.

Not really -- changing the battery takes may 5 minutes; the case comes right off and after that it's six little screws. It's not a 5-second drop and replace, but it ain't bad. The batteries I bought were legitimate LGs, so it's not bleak.

The only thing is that the N5's battery life is not great, but that was true even when it was new (the device).

I'm not as concerned about getting into the sealed system and actually replacement of the battery (although I'm also not looking forward to it -- especially on "not-my-own-phone"), as I am about getting a "bad" battery. Based your reply, you scored a "win" in getting your replacement, while most other posters have reported the opposite. Suggestions on replicating that achievement?

I recently got one from eBay. Just search "Nexus 5 oem battery," and then look for one that's priced somewhere between $20-$35. I paid $30 for mine, just a Buy It Now, cuz these companies sell Huge quantities of replacement parts - lucky for us Nexus 5 owners, as we have notoriously feeble batteries that lose their "oomph," and slowly die after a year or so lol.
The company I got mine from is called (what it says on the return address anyway) "PositiveCellPhoneParts, LLC." Great quality, it's brand new, has the manufacture date stamped right on the bottom right of the front side. (And how do I Know for Sure it's brand new and was never used? Well, it came entirely Sealed in a fitting plastic baggie, had zero marks or dents, like my original has now after getting it out of the phone, with not even the slightest bend in the flex cable/ribbon.) My original battery was obviously made when the phone was made, and the mfg date of my Old one was January 8, 2014. The replacement I got is a Legit OEM LG "BL-T9" 2300mah battery, and was made in April of this year. 4/12/15, I believe. Anyway, u just gotta make sure the battery u get has the LG logo top-left, "BL-T9" top-right, and has the rest of the corresponding identifying marks. I'll post a pic of my original, my new battery looks identical, aside from the mfg date at the bottom right corner, obviously.
Super easy to replace, and BEYOND Well Worth It!! I just replaced my battery almost 2 weeks ago (along with my screen, without a new frame, so the hard way basically lol), and it's like having a Whole New Phone, I **** you not!! My phone hasn't run this well for nearly a year now. I noticed a difference Immediately after swapping in the new battery, and it only got Better, after cycling it a couple times, without overcharging.
My phone was Literally dying every 90-120 minutes, regardless what I was doing. It'd rip thru 35%-45% within about a half hour, just listening to music...Nothing Else at All running, screen off, WiFi on, LTE off. It got So Bad before I got my new battery, my phone was seriously shutting itself down, up to 15-20 times A Day, when the battery was showing anywhere from 45%-85%!! It was horrendous, I couldn't take my phone anywhere with me, cuz it was pointless to do so. With my data turned on, without WiFi, screen off, phone just sitting in my pocket, I'd leave for work with it at a 90% Minimum (I would keep it on the charger till about 5mins before walking out the door), and well before lunch, or my first smoke break, it was dead. Sometimes I could get it to turn back on, it'd light the screen up, show the boot screen, then shut Right back off. Then I'd plug it in and turn it right on, and it almost Always showed over 50%. Wasn't an issue of calibration, as most ppl think in my case, it was simply that the battery was Crapped Out, and couldn't and wouldn't send or receive the necessary voltage to keep my phone functioning on any type of level.
Now my beloved N5 - with new battery & new screen - is Far Better than it's ever been, without question. I can watch an entire HD movie on my phone and not hafta stand against a wall with a charger cable dangling from my pocket, waiting for it to hafta sip power from the wall slowly, and Still be dying. I only charge my phone once a day, and that's usually for about a half hour after I get off work, and just like that, I'm back to 85-100% usually. I have an app called CurrentWidget, that shows battery stats in real time, like voltage, mah, temperature, percentage, etc. It's perfect for getting a Full charge when I do charge it longer than a half hour or so, cuz I can pick my phone up, look at the widget and see what the mah intake (another way to read the voltage, which is also available by tapping the widget) is at. When it gets to 1 or 0, I unplug. And thus far, that's Really doing well for what's practically an all new phone now lol.
Why do I put up with a phone that can be so moody and temperamental, when I could just get a 5X and not hafta worry about these things? Cuz I Love my Nexus 5. Perfect size, perfect speed, perfect reliability (Now with a kickass battery lol), I love everything about this phone. Are there things I wish were better? Of course, who doesn't? But I'm not gonna buy a 5X right away and hope that it's a good fit for me. My N5 fits my hand, my eyes, my needs, my life. Not gonna abandon my favorite phone I've ever owned cuz the battery shat itself and the screen got busted. I replaced both, and couldn't possibly be happier with the results 😁 Sorry for the long post, just trying to be thorough, since when I was looking for advice and info about my battery issues, what to look for, what others dealt with, what to expect with a new battery, etc, I couldn't find Anything, even on here. So it seemed kinda scary and unknown, so I just took a leap of faith and bought a replacement battery, and hoped things would turn out even half as well as they have. Hope this has helped, and if you finished this entire Novel of a reply, congratulations! LOL here's my original BL-T9 battery from my N5, so you'll know what to look for on eBay in the pics. Definitely go with eBay, or Google the company I got it from via eBay, PositiveCellPhoneParts, LLC. Lightning-quick service and s&h, high quality, and actually sent me a follow-up message on eBay to make sure I got my battery, hooked it up, and was pleased with my purchase. Most companies won't do that for a $30 cell phone battery lol. Their address is in the pic too, hope that helps!!

In the first post I made to this thread I gave the link (LG Nexus 5 D820 Battery - ETrade Supply) -- these were OEM batteries made in March of this year, and I've read numerous posts about these always being legit LGs. I'd say go for it! :)

Extremely interesting, especially since more than one of us were specifically told by LG support that they didn't sell the batteries and we would not be able to get them. Encompass is the official parts place for LG. The website says the parts are not in stock, with an estimated ship date of 02/07/2016. So I ordered two and we will see if they ever send anything (of course I will report back).

I'm going to place an order as well and we'll see. It does say on the vendor purchase order so that might explain the ship date

Mine says "ETA 2/7/16 or 2 days" whatever that means exactly...

Listed as backorder though. Will have to see.

Hahaha now it says "no eta".

I just returned my nexus because the battery issue, and they sent me the new refurbished one, check if your phone is still under warranty. or call them up if you bought from google website.

Interesting. I didn't get an EMail, so I checked the link I had from the order. IT says "QTY 2 SHIP 1 BO 1". Oh- there is a tracking number on it. UPS doesn't know about it, though. ">>> UPS could not locate the shipment details for your request. Please verify your information and try again later. "

Huh. I got a text from UPS this morning saying delivery expected tomorrow. Strange.

I didn't actually expect it to get shipped, to the point that I haven't ordered the tools for the project yet...should probably do that now.....

What is an SOT? Do I have one? Maybe not.

Screen On Time. Last night I had a SOT of 30 minutes and around 56% battery left. Any light gaming (Subway Surfers, Temple Run 2) just obliterates my battery in short order. But, if I let it sit a little bit, it magically regains several percentage points. So it's toast. It's coming up on almost exactly 2 years old now.

Honestly I wouldn't even attempt the battery replacement if the phone didn't still run great otherwise and it wasn't a relatively simple procedure. For the heck of it I checked the process for the 2013 Moto X (wife's phone) and told her if her battery goes she's out of luck....beyond my skill level (iFixit shows IIRC 5 steps for the Nexus, and around 22 for the Moto, involving a mircowave oven......)
