Nexus 5: First Impressions & Reviews

Re: Using my new nexus5 right now

Well we are talking about a half of a mm here which is so small I'm really amazed you are even bothering to mention it. I mean, really? Your N7 is a hair thinner and that's worth mentioning?
I still have my GS3 and when both are laying face down, its so close you can hardly tell that the N5 is a tad thinner.
I use a case and have a Slim Armor case on it so it's not even a slight issue to me. The slim armor case is a lot thinner than the Otter box I had on my GS3, and when they are naked, it still isn't an issue.
I guess everyone has their preferences, I'm just amazed that anyone is stressing about a half a mm.

lolol i was just illustrating the point - the phone's too thick. it's still the best phone out there IMO, but it can stand to lose a few mm in thickness, which it undoubtedly will in the next iteration.

Not if it means sacrificing the battery being smaller or unable to get bigger. You must be coming from a iPhone 5s that is real thin because it has such a small battery. I dont think the Nexus 5 is too thick AT ALL.

I don't think that the N5 is too thick and I have an iPhone 5S. It felt really good I'm the hand when I owned one. One of the best feeling phones actually.

Interesting indeed but i dont agree with the writers reasons. His biggest thing is looks and feel and it shouldnt be. I dont mind plastic phones at all and dont like Aluminim backs. They are way too slippery and i drop them all the time which results in dings and of course perhaps broken screens. I would never own a aluminum back or glass back phone. I dont care how great a phone looks if it doesnt do the things i want it too...such as the iPhone for one. Ill buy a Samsung GS4 and its plastic back over those anyday. And imo it looks real nice as well.

My GS3 is/was a great phone but since ive had my Nexus 5, ive found a few things about it that work better than my GS3 did and it is a really great device and so fast,... even if it doesnt have a MicroSD slot or IR blaster.

Plus he seemed to weigh the bloatware a lot when ranking. I think that may have been why he ranked the gs4 less high, and the g2.

I dont have a LG G2 so no idea why he ranks it that low. It does feel great in the hand and i actually really like the back buttons the few times i did mess with one. And the battery is great.

Yeah, he definitely had a lot of bias. He doesn't like large phones either, I'm guessing. I have to admit the photo of the guy holding the Note 3 to his head (if that's what it was) looked funny, but then, I don't get out much. :p:D

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

So I have had my Nexus 5 32Gb(black) for about a month now and wanted to give my longer term review:
I came from an HTC one(my first android after 5 different iPhones) Had the HTC one for about 5 months and just never warmed up to it. Yes its beautiful, well made. Hated the Sense UI, and ergonomics.
The Nexus on the other hand, has been joy to use overall. Love the launcher, and lack of a skin. Blazingly fast, smooth. I find the build quality just fine. It feels good in my hands.
I would agree the speakerphone is a bit lacking but not a show stopper and much improved with 4.4.2.
I do use the phone as a phone quite a bit, and voice and signal quality has been very good. I use bluetooth extensively and have paired it with many types of headsets, cars, speakers and had no issues.
Battery is one area that has troubled me, especially when one plays with a new toy for hours on end. With that said, with 4.4.2 the one area that was an issue for me, my phone draining excessively during idle times, has been fixed. I can easily get 12-5 hours with 3-5 hours of screen time and a good amount of use. No worse than my old iPhone, or my work Blackberry.

Overall I am so very pleased with the Nexus 5 and will be keeping it for a while.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

Since I am a long time lurker (HTC droid incredible days), these forums have been invaluable in learning how to use android devices.

After 2 weeks of use, my first impressions of the Nexus 5 are wow, fast and smooth! I wanted a bigger screen for my weakening eyes. My husband and I share a yahoo and a Google account between 2 smart phones and 2 tablets. That is working well for us.

When I turned on the Nexus 5 the first time I did not have a sim card so it activated via wifi on our Verizon air card. Before I knew it, many of the apps including non Google apps I use on my tablet, downloaded automatically to my surprise. I still don't understand how they were selected.

Google voice configuration has been a struggle since we had only used it for texting on the HTC droid and tablet. Now I'm using with straight talk byod 4g sim on ATT with my Google voice number forwarding to my straight talk number. I still don't understand why hangouts refers to a foreign phone number for the person I texted when they respond back.

I have had one occurrence where someone called and the nexus 5 never woke up and rang before they gave up and terminated the call. Do not know if this is an isolated incident at this point. It does seem a little slow on waking up after screen timeout and lockout occurs but so is our Verizon HTC. Our signal strength runs around -105 on both vendors so they may be struggling initially. Changing the setting from LTE to 3G seems to make things work better all the time in our weak signal area.

Used the navigation at night for the first time and we really like the dark screen background. That is great. How did it know it was nighttime? Impressive.

OK Google now is one of my big favorites and now it has shown up on my tablet too. Thank you Google.

Have struggled with finding files compared to the Asus transformer. I create a lot of PDF recipes from URLs' using the urltopdf app.

The phone dialer is really nice. Initially I was getting confused between editing a contact in people vs only viewing info in the dialer. The only feature I miss from the HTC people app is the ability to press the location button on their address to take me directly to the maps. Copy and paste has been my only solution so far.

Good sound on voice calls.

I am thrilled with my Nexus 5 purchase, including the camera. Again thank you Google. And thank you forum members for all the helpful posts.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

24 hours and I'm loving it. The second best build behind hTc One.

I read Camera is mediocre but it's the last component I use and while the Speaker is weak again that's what Headphones are for. Honestly, we've been spoiled by hTc's BoomSound!

It's really a relief that I don't have to put up with Garbage from Samsung and LG.

The best Super Phone of 2013 for sure!

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

I fear I'm going to be underwhelmed coming from a Nexus 4. The only difference that I'm going to face is the authentic GEL. Yes the screen is bigger and the specs are too, but in the end I'm going to set it up exactly like my Nexus 4 with the same apps and same launcher. Maybe I should have waited for the Nexus 6.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

Hi all,

I wanted to jump in here and make some comments about my first impressions of the N5. I'm coming from a N4, and I'm on ATT. I've only had my N5 for 24 hours so these are very fresh opinions. (Take that for what it's worth) :)

1. This phone is beautiful!! I mean, wow. I am super impressed with the display. It is bright, crisp, clear, perfect colors. I didn't expect it to look so much better than my N4, but it definitely does. Every time I look at it, I'm delighted by the display. Beautiful.

2. For work reasons, I have an iPhone 5. But, my daily phone is my android device. I use the iPhone rarely, and for short periods of time. (I test stuff on both iOS and Android). Because of this, my nano sim is provisioned for an unlimited iPhone LTE plan. I use an adapter for my Android devices. This lets me switch between the two without calling ATT every time and dealing with that hassle. The sim installed in the N5 without issue, and everything works great. LTE is awesome.

3. I like GEL. I hadn't had a chance to use it until now, and I really like it.

4. Fast, no lag, smooth.

5. Feels better in my hand than the N4. I know most people preferred the "premium" feel of the glass back on the N4, but I actually prefer the feel of the N5.

6. Camera is better than my N4. It's not great by any means, but it is a big improvement.

7. I love the display. Did I already say that? ;)

8. Battery life is better than my N4. I don't think it's drastic, but I have seen an improvement in the short time I've been using it. I'll have better opinions than that as time goes on. Right now, I'm happy with it.

That's my quick first impressions. Very happy I decided to upgrade. I only have one issue so far, and that's LightFlow. It just doesn't seem to work correctly. LED blinks for some notifications, sometimes. Sometimes not. It blinks rapidly for a second or so when I turn off the screen. Weird stuff. May uninstall it and just live with the Google white LED.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

I've just received my black 16gb model, really impressed with it, and that's coming from a iPhone 5s which although was great, was boring to me and not as great as the initial excitement made it seem. It's fast, responsive and really nice to hold and use. The only thing I hope gets better is the battery life, can anyone confirm that it does improve? I've only had mine a day but charged it fully and used it pretty much most the afternoon. But first impressions are great!

Yes, I can confirm that after a week you will be getting much battery battery life. When I first got mine I was only seeing 1-2 hours screen on time however now I am approaching 6.

Is that running stock OS?

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

Yes, it is running stock 4.4.2 however, after two weeks I rooted and installed Franco Kernel - I have definitely noticed a difference.

How was it before the Franco kernel? Did it still improve over time?
