Nexus 6/Shamu by Motorola?

A rugged flip phone?? Very small niche for something like that. I hear you on the outdoor stuff. I could never imagine a useful time for a flip phone while wearing gloves or anything or the sort. I just climbed Mt Rainier and my galaxy s5 active was perfect. I want to ditch Samsung and go back to a Moto or nexus. I do agree and hope it's not a 5.9 size. I run ultra marathons and big phones do not fit anywhere, but I've found a 5" to he perfect for me.

Definitely hear you about ruggedness. I mountain climb and I never take my Android smartphone when I do. It's a shame, but I don't want to risk it. At the same time, I do like my phones to have a very high quality built with great materials that feel great in the hand. Unfortunately, it's the ruggedness vs luxuriousness that I have to grapple with, but to me, luxuriousness would win out. If need be I can put one of those cases that make it look like a tank to protect it.

As far as the size is concerned, I hope that there is both a 5.2" and 5.9" Nexus X models. I personally would prefer a phone I can function properly with one hand. I totally understand that there are a lot of people that like the larger screens and have no issues with two-handed use, and that's great, and then there are people who aren't interested in large phones like that. All the better to ship two different sizes.

One thing I'm interested in is whether the Nexus X and Nexus 9 tablet will share the same design aesthetic. The Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 5 had similar look/design aesthetic. Wonder if Google will do the same again with the Nexus X and 9, especially seeing as the Nexus 9 (or Volantis/Flounder as it's codename is rumoured) was supposed to have an aluminium body. Will the Nexus X also have an aluminium body?

I'm the complete opposite, the migration towards "phablets" or whatever is wholly unappealing to me. Much of the time I find that even my Nexus 4 is a bit cumbersome (e.g. hiking, biking, skiing, etc.). I'd love to have a minimalist phone (small, high quality, bright screen with minimal smart phone functionality such as maps and audio player, a rugged flip design with weather sealing would be ideal) that doesn't take up much space, but can act as a portable hotspot and I'll carry an iPod Touch or my Nexus 7 when I need / want it.

I hear you.... I do a lot of mountain biking and hiking myself... I love to use my Nexus 5 and a tracking App to track time out and distance covered... But it fits comfortably into the pouch under the seat on the bike(and I usually wrap it in a rag/hand towel so it's not banging around in there while I am out) I don't need it mounted so I can see the device.. I just check my mileage and time after I am done.... The only time I could see a larger phablet device becoming a problem is when I take the kids to Six Flags... I also have to wear Cargo shorts or pants as is so I have a pocket to put my phone in... Regular jeans or pants can be an issue with the larger phone and a 5.9 inch device could be an issue without the cargo's....

Its just a rumor with the 5.9" display. Almost every tech site is now reporting it will sport a 5.2". Now as long as its not amoled ill buy. If not its the mi4 lte for me.

wow... Where exactly do you put any kind of phone while running a marathon? Any kind of marathon is brutal on the body and mind.. I couldn't imagine even trying to keep up with where my phone is during such an event.. I have an iPod for music when I go running or biking (although I keep my phone in the pouch under the bike seat when I ride my bike....) Typically when I go running or even the gym I put the phone away for that hour or two and only take my iPod with me..........

There are belts that have a small stretchy neoprene pouch. These belts are awesome. If I'm running and ultra I typically have a camelback for fuel so I just stick it in there. I never look at my phone so it's just there to track. I use and love the app strava.

Completely agree. I'm constantly going back and forth regarding ruggedness and luxury, but I too find myself on the luxury side. However, my s5 active has been incredible in terms of the ruggedness.

I like to use Endomondo for tracking my runs/bike rides..... Been using it for a few years now... Have not tried anything else tough...

Does Motorola make any smartphones without amoled screens?

DROID MINI has an LCD while the DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX use AMOLED.

Not a fan of the amoled screen.. I like the Nexus 5's IPS LCD screen.. I had the HTC rezound before my nexus 5 which also had an LCD screen..

TK Tech's last twitter update is interesting. Says a source notes there could be an LG Nexus AND a moto Nexus? Maybe a nexus 5 reboot?

Yep, I was wrong about the date (not sure how I missed that). I checked AC blog at the end of the day and didn't see an article about it.

I'm still skeptical. Guess that's just how I am. There have been too many times where "reliable" leakers have been wrong about major things (like Key Lime Pie not actually being Key Lime Pie). And the whole roadrunner thing.....

As for display, AMOLED is perfect for all the stuff Moto did with notifications.

I'm ok with either as long as it's properly calibrated. Modern AMOLED doesn't have near as many downsides as they did a year or two ago. The Galaxy S5 display looks really nice, and it got even better on the GS5 LTE-A version with the QHD resolution.

An aluminum body would be the kiss of death for either of these devices for me. Wireless charging support is a must for any phone/tablet I buy.

The purpose of the nexus program is to provide subsidized phones to the masses?

Possibly, though perhaps the Android One program might help with that as well. Android One is trying to get manufacturers to make stock Android phones for less than $100. That will increase the popularity of Android, especially in emerging markets.

I see.

I'm personally not interested in wireless charging (until they improve tech to where you can wirelessly charge a device without having to put it on those stupid charging pads) so I'd rather the metal build.

Most of all, I'd like the two (or 3...) devices to have similar design aesthetic. They did it last year with the Nexus 7 and Nexus 5, would like the same with the Nexus 9 and Nexus X. Whatever it looks like, as long as they're similar.

Isn't it for developers?

I keep hearing that the Nexus line is for developers. I would curious to hear actual developers talk about their experience with it.

For example, Android Central has developers that make an Android app. Do they carry a Nexus? If so, do they need a Nexus 5, or is a Nexus 4 good enough for development? How about a Google Play Moto G? That runs stock Android, too.

What qualities do developers look for in a phone?

Koush (ClockWorkMod) has Nexus devices that he uses to make official recoveries for. If it has different hardware, that becomes a target for developers, so you would want to have the latest that Google offers.

They don't need to "carry" a Nexus for it to be a developer device. They need to ensure that their apps run properly and best on Nexus since that's the "reference platform" from Google. Then branch out to other specific devices that exhibit issues/problems.

"Stock Android" is not the target. There are many devices that run stock android but might not have the same framework as a Nexus device. That would/could change the behavior of an app. Nexus is used because (theoretically) if the app runs well on a Nexus it should run well on everything. Minor performance optimizations might be needed in some cases to deal with lower end devices.
