Nexus 6P: Reviews and Unboxings Thread

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

the only thing I will say, especially about the camera, is that it's less about the quality of the camera and more about the software. the iOS camera app is, frankly, fantastic. It may not have the most options, it may not look the best, etc. But the simple fact is the time from pocket to picture on iOS is still better than anything on Android, and that is to many people the most important aspect of a camera on a phone. And add in that to this point, in 99% of cases the "I just want to press this button and get a picture" image is better than on android. Sure on most new high end android phones you *can* get a picture that matches an iPhone, but it can take more effort.

iOS has the best camera on the market because the entire overall experience, from the app to the image quality to the simplicity of it, has been better than android. I can't wait to see if the 6P comes close to matching it.

Having a good camera experience is about more than just raw image quality, and up to this point Apple's has generally still been better.

I agree about the Iphone. Looking at that review from the Verge, it seems like the 6P may have accomplished what you were talking about. I've never cared for all the settings in the camera app on other phones. The stock Android camera app has never been that complicated, it just didn't take as good of pictures and, took too long to focus at times, from my experience. That doesn't look to be the case now with the 6P.

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

Absolutely that the camera experience depends on the app and post-processing ability.

Hardware is all relatively equal, but it's how the phone deals with the actual software around the camera that matters.

Good read. I am really looking forward to what Phil and the guys think :).

I think if Doze was more aggressive in putting Android in deep sleep it could increase battery life more realistic. Realistically meanings it sits in your pocket for hour and movement of device in your pocket doesn't stop Doze from activating. Doze activates when the phone has been still long periods time with out screen coming on. I don't know if requires software or hardware or both to achieve this functionality out of Doze but look forward to future and hope it's just software.

This talk about Doze is amusing to me. My OnePlus One uses .5 % or less per hour on standby all the time - moving or not. Sometimes I go to bed with 100% and wake up to a phone with 98% charge still left. Progress?

Yeah, I remember having the OnePlus One and that's one thing I really liked about it.

Nexus phones have never been spectacular when it comes to battery life. I think there's a misnomer that Vanilla Android somehow has better battery life than a skinned version of the OS. I'm beginning to realize that the opposite appears to be true. Google doesn't care about battery life.. they care about content delivery and advertising. Because of that, Vanilla Android by default has all the bells and whistles they have conceived over the years TURNED ON by default. Google wants you connected/synced at all times and wants to push content to you nonstop. I think the OEMs like Samsung, LG, and HTC take the basic code, and try to pair it down to what's necessary, then they add their wrinkle. I think that's why you see such a heavy skin like Touchwiz still have tremendous battery life like what people are seeing with the Note 5 which only has a 3000mah battery.

It just looks like we the user will have to do a lot more work to fine tune the Nexus 6p to get it's battery as optimal as possible. Don't depend on it being optimal right out of the box.

That review was definitely glowing and justifies my purchase even more. I hope this is the future of Nexus phones. I've long said that these need to be the top tier of Android phones - right up there with the flagships of everything else - and should be right up there with the perceptions of iPhones. It's good to see that it finally may be happening. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET THIS PHONE!!!

They definitely seem to have taken a different approach to the nexus this year. Earlier nexus phones never looked like they were intended to be flagships or geared to the average consumer. Nexus phones were just a baseline for OEMs and Developers to use. A reference phone didn't need a premium metal build, amazing screens or truly top tier specs.

The 6P however seems to take aim directly at other flagship phones giving the average android user something truly eye catching. I'm just curious if they will really market the phone or not.

Obviously this is all my opinion and conjecture as I had no hand in making the phone, sadly.

That is a glowing review. Give me my phone already!

My sentiments exactly. I'm just hoping that real world folks don't face quality control issues once their devices come in. But in all honesty, if all turns out as well as I expect, I wouldn't mind another Google/Huawei collaboration next year.

It's probably time that Google went from being the base line to the top of the line standard as to how Android should look, feel and perform. After the debacle that was the Nexus 6 launch last year, and the problems that followed, I'm glad that it seems they learned their lesson with the 6P. Fingers crossed that the good vibes continue.

Agreed, and moving forward what I would love to see is them reel in the OEMs when it comes to software. Google learned their lesson and kept everyone in check with Android Wear, Auto and TV and I think they are going to slowly bring Android for phones back under google control as well. These stories coming out lately about Google's Android 6.0 Compatibility Definition Document make me hopeful for the future.

Google Will Require OEMs To Include Unmodified Doze Mode In Android 6.0

Maybe one day the carrier will just provide you service, the OEM will just make you a phone and Google will just give you Android.

I suspect much of the difference is that they released 2 phones this year. Since the Nexus line was intended for developers, so they could develop on pure Android, as well as a platform that could get betas for future Android builds, I think there was a feeling they needed to keep the phone affordable.

I think having two phones this year "freed" them somewhat. They could make their true flagship Nexus, the one with the high end specs and all the bells and whistles; yet still keep a cheaper device that developers could use to create apps.
