Nexus 6P: Reviews and Unboxings Thread

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

They definitely seem to have taken a different approach to the nexus this year. Earlier nexus phones never looked like they were intended to be flagships or geared to the average consumer. Nexus phones were just a baseline for OEMs and Developers to use. A reference phone didn't need a premium metal build, amazing screens or truly top tier specs.

The 6P however seems to take aim directly at other flagship phones giving the average android user something truly eye catching. I'm just curious if they will really market the phone or not.

Obviously this is all my opinion and conjecture as I had no hand in making the phone, sadly.

I think Google wants these phones to hit more common users' hands - not just us tech junkies. This is also my conjecture, but seeing at least the 5X in commercials during the baseball playoffs represents a different approach to me than Google has made in year's past. They've had commercials, but they seem more geared for just Google services rather than hardware. I'd like to see some 6P commercials, too. From what I've seen and read this looks to be that premium stock Android phone that I, and assuming a lot of others, have been looking for.

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

you saw more 5X commercials in the last couple days since that phone is now shipping to people. Wouldn't surprise me to see some 6P ad next week when those phones start shipping and people actually have them.

Nexus phones have never been spectacular when it comes to battery life. I think there's a misnomer that Vanilla Android somehow has better battery life than a skinned version of the OS. I'm beginning to realize that the opposite appears to be true. Google doesn't care about battery life.. they care about content delivery and advertising. Because of that, Vanilla Android by default has all the bells and whistles they have conceived over the years TURNED ON by default. Google wants you connected/synced at all times and wants to push content to you nonstop. I think the OEMs like Samsung, LG, and HTC take the basic code, and try to pair it down to what's necessary, then they add their wrinkle. I think that's why you see such a heavy skin like Touchwiz still have tremendous battery life like what people are seeing with the Note 5 which only has a 3000mah battery.

It just looks like we the user will have to do a lot more work to fine tune the Nexus 6p to get it's battery as optimal as possible. Don't depend on it being optimal right out of the box.

I don't agree with your assessment. I've had a lot of Android phones, and in general they have had less battery life compared to the Iphones. I've had every Note, and have never seen the battery life like some Note fans on this site have claimed. Nexus Phones have a lot of stuff turned on by default but so do phones with skins, in fact from my experience, the phones with skins add even more stuff that syncs that you don't want. At least the Nexus phones sync the Google stuff correctly & smoothly from my experience.

IMO, good battery life comes from a combination of size and software optimizations. The Nexus 6 used to have garbage battery life, now it's really good after all the Google updates ( something that won't happen as fast with a skinned phone). The Iphones 6+ has a bigger battery and combined with whatever Apple does makes the battery life outstanding.

The OnePlus One ran CyanogenMod, the OS that used to be a custom rom, and has a history of helping battery life on some phones.

I don't think there's a misnomer about Nexus phones having good battery life cause it's stock Android. I've heard a lot of things from posters about what they like about stock Android over skins, but better battery life is something I don't recall reading much. I'm not saying no one hasn't said it, I've just not read it.

The LG G2 & 3 (especially the G2) are the only skinned phones to have battery life comparable if not better than the Iphone. LG definitely seems to be doing something, although I have a G4 and, while it's good; It's not as good as the previous two models from my experience.

With the improvement that the Nexus 6 has shown, I see no reason why it won't be improved on the Nexus 6P. In fact I will go on record right now and say that it will be, for me at least. I wouldn't say they don't care about battery life. I think Google really stepped it up with the Nexus 6P.

As far as Google pushing their services, I'm sure they do that. They want to make a profit like any other company, but I don't think that's the total picture. I'm a Google fan I admit and use a lot of their services.

I was thinking the same thing. I hope that's the case.

Personally, my experience with an iPhone (used a 5s for a few months) is that the battery life was worse than the Galaxy Nexus I had used previously. I had trouble it through a day on that phone. There is also a reason why Samsung made fun, in their commercials, of all the iPhone "wall huggers".

Its also time google make their own phone. maybe pixel 6p next year? we never know

TBH, I'm shocked this hasn't happened yet. Maybe w/ the introduction of Alphabet this year, they're finally going to have a team that is solely designed to this as one of their subsidiaries. I'd have lofty expectations for such device also.

When they made the Nexus One I think they were going for the best phone, but it didn't sell well. Then the Iphone 4 came out with it's glass & metal body and front facing camera (the first of it's kind). After that I'm not sure what Google was trying to do.

It's funny to see the Nexus phones have this type of following. Google has really capitalized on it by putting the big "Nexus" branding on the back. The phones used to have Google on the back and the manufacturer in small lettering on the bottom.

I'm pretty excited about the 6P. They've seemed to have finally went all out this time, like you mentioned.

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

Yes I always loved and respected Verge opinion. Never understand people naive bashing Verge believing they only like iPhone. It's simple the iPhone is one most well known and top smartphones out there. The Verge just used as benchmark for analysis and comparison because it's well know popular. Easy device for non tech person to understand difference between quality and functionality when Verge makes reviews. Now look the Verge talk about 6P and give it great praise. I don't think people can keep accuse Verge of being iPhone bias anymore imo.

I'm sorry but this comment made me pretty angry. Look at when they reviewed the Galaxy Note, and then compare to what they said about the iPhone 6+. If you don't find that ridiculous, then you should apply for a job there with those clowns.

Lots of folks on here saying how great it is that Google finally designed a premium flagship Nexus. You all may be right, but I have another theory to propose. Maybe Google didn't design it. Maybe Huawei has been itching to get into the mainstream US market and saw this as a golden opportunity. Maybe they went all hands on deck and knocked it out of the park on their own. And Google said: wow, thanks guys!

That's interesting I hadn't thought of that.

I was thinking similar lines. Is this the first Huawei without their Kirin chipset, I don't know.

Exactly, Dieter was one of the ones reigning in the iVerge situation.

This is how Anakin Skywalker went wrong. Don't give in to the dark side!

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

Just finished reading the review and watching the video. The Nexus 6P looks like a very solid phone with very little to complain about. Google/Huawei may truly have a winner on their hands. Now if it can just come back in stock soon so I can order one!

Iit's been widely detailed that googles team was heavily involved in every aspect of the phones hardware design. At the announcement and on the Reddit AMA.
