Why not just use nexus media importer and avoid the whole rooting issue?
I'm afraid 32GB isn't going to cut the mustard. I need much more space than that.

Would stick mount work with an SSD without the need to root?

You said about media importer which would restrict my usage to the 32gb available on the machine which would be too littleStickmount requires root.
[edit]: Sorry, where do you see the 32GB limitation for NMI?
HiHere are a few options worth considering:
Kingston WiDrive: Wi-Drive | Kingston
Seagate Satellite Wireless | Seagate
both of the 2 above are batterypowered NAS-like devices, which can be accessed over wifi using an app from Google Play.
If you do want to use your videos in a location where you have access to power, this is also pretty cool:
SE-208BW - OVERVIEW | SAMSUNG
which is a media server/router/dvd drive that can be accessed over wifi with an app as well. Its main advantage is that it will let you play a DVD directly on your Nexus 7, but it also lets you hook up USB HDD drives (supports NTFS), so you can play your videos from there. Unlike the other 2 products I mentioned, this one is not battery-powered, however, it currently runs for $50 on Amazon, half the price of a 128GB USB stick.

It's probably my misunderstanding sorry. I thought the max I could import to the device was 32gb less os etc which would be too little for me. You must have meant something else. My misunderstanding of what you were referring to sorry.Sorry, I'm not following you. I never said anything about a 32GB limit using NMI and I can't find any reference to that effect...
Cheers, if you can give me the heads up when you do the conversion I would really appreciate it. I'd still go for the updates on OTA.
Thank you. Argos have the Nexus 32GB in stock from 11 Nov. I have ?170 worth of vouchers for Argos so I will buy it then and it will only cost me ?30Just unlocked and rooted my Nexus 7 using the written guide on this site. I used Paul O'Briens Super boot to get root access. Didn't install clockwork recovery as I wanted to keep ota updates. Also installed root keeper afterwards so I won't lose root after an Ota. Rooting was easy.
Here's a link to the guide I used.
