Nexus 7 kick ipad mini's ****

Well, here go the counterarguments.

The apps are #1. Too many of the apps that I have running on my Mini are not available in tablet versions on Android, they are just scaled up phone versions. Even Netflix has some added features on the iOS version that don't exist on the Android version such as automatically playing the next episode in a TV season.
That seems to be the case for iOS apps. About a third of the apps I use on iOS aren't available in tablet versions and are literally just blown up phone apps. The apps on Android that don't have tablet versions scale up much more nicely.

I also thing the screen quality is a bit better as in color depth on the mini. I have over 5,000 HD TV shows that I bought in iTunes and over 200 HD movies bought in iTunes. Watching them on the mini, they just look so perfect in the quality and color depth. On the Nexus 7, the display is too white and bright. Turning the brightness well, just turns down the brightness and then it is too dim and not as white.
You own the 2013 Nexus 7? Because the iPad mini's screen quality is nothing next to the N7's.

Then there are times when tapping on a link does nothing. I have to zoom in on the page to actually get the link to work.
Never happened to me.

The keyboard also is bad. I can't tell you how many times I'll be typing something and a key next to it or above or below gets typed when I clearly didn't press that key. I've watched it happen. I've had that happen on my Nexus 4 as well. When I want to type something, more times than not, I'll start to pick up the Nexus 7 and then stop because I think it's much easier to type it out using the Minis keyboard.
Funny, because a lot of iOS users I've met believe that Android's keyboard is much better. When typing on iOS (and this was before I had even used Android), I would experience a lot of mistyping, but Android's keyboard is just so much easier to use. And there's a much nicer autocorrect for when you do mistype. And if the stock keyboard doesn't cut it, there are lots of alternatives.

I like how Siri does things. I tell it so set a timer for 45 minutes and she does it. I tell my Nexus 7 to set a timer for 45 minutes and it sets an alarm for 45 minutes from now.
That's great for the times that Siri actually understands you, but at least for me and everyone in my family who's used both, Siri has trouble understanding words while Google Now understands things perfectly.

I tell Siri to take me home and it automatically opens maps and plots a route to take me home. My Nexus 7 gives me a review of a 2011 comedy.
Maybe you haven't actually set something as home? Not sure, but again, you don't have to use Now; there are other options on Android.

I see what you're trying to do here, but if an iPad Mini owner is going to say anything about the screen is better than the N7, and that the keyboard is better on the iPad then at that point all you can do is shake your head and move on with life. The keyboard is a HUGE reason that most iOS fans I know, have switched to Android. When you have 100 keyboard choices on Android and 1 on iOS, it's impossible to not find a keyboard you love for the N7. Unless you aren't trying or you're digging for bad reasons that you prefer the iPad Mini. The screen is just a complete non issue. Nothing about the Mini screen beats the N7. When I first picked up my buddy's iPad Mini, I had to double check that it was indeed an Apple product. It looked HORRIBLE and then I thought he had a screen protector on that was distorting the colors and image but he didn't. It really does suck that bad.

I don't know why it frustrated me when people exchange reasons why they like one product more than another when the one they say is better clearly is below par. I wish it didn't bug me because I know that everyone has their own needs and preference. It's just so sad to me to see the best 7" tablet (the N7) not getting the respect it deserves just because it doesn't have an Apple on the back. We all know dang well if it was made by apple and the mini was made by asus that EVERYONE would be freaking out about how incredible the Apple N7 was.

Only the mobile data iPad mini has a GPS. All Nexus 7 models have a GPS. So you have to pay double the price to get an iPad mini with a GPS.

Yet again, an Android fan having to explain to an Apple fan what Apple offers. That is a very typical occurence.

It is essentially a smaller iPad 2 (same screen resolution, same SoC, same RAM...).

The Mini does have a better screen then the iPad 2. All iPads have the same screen resolution which is why they are so easy to design for. One app works for all iPads.

No, the iPad mini has a 768x1024 screen resolution and the regular iPad has a 1536x2048 screen. So they don't have the same screen resolution.

Shake your head all you want. I never said that the Mini has a better display then the Nexus 7. I think the colors come out looking much warmer on the Minis screen.

I'll say it agin. If I had bought my Mini first, I would never have thought of buying a Nexus 7. FOR ME, see how I phrased that, FOR ME, the mini is a better experience for the apps alone.

On the iPad Mini introduction, they clearly said that the Mini had the same resolution as the full sized iPad so that they wouldn't require any changes in the way devs designed their apps.

If you are quoting shills like CNet you already lost the argument.
Advantages of the iPad Mini are the 7.9 inch screen which gives you 35% more viewable area and that is really noticeable. The build quality and service and support are unmatched, and it runs real tablet apps instead of upsized phones apps. The old Nexus 7 did not hurt iPad Mini sales, the iPad Mini coming next month will almost certainly have a retina display and will also do quite well. Plus you can buy an iPad Min in 16, 32, or 64 GB and with LTE and GPS.
I have bought three of the 2013 Nexus 7's. One for myself and two as gifts. I also have many Apple devices. This is not a zero sum game and some people like different things than others. People staking their ego on what type of device they have chosen are showing a serious lack of maturity.

They didn't say that because the 10 inch retina iPad already existed. It's the resolution multiplier that allows Devs to not have to change their apps. However Devs change their apps when the retina displays arrived to provide higher quality text, images and UI elements but it was not a difficult thing to do and it helped them sell apps and upgrades.
Anyone who says that full size tablet app quality and election are not vastly superior on Apple devices is either ignorant of the subject or lying.
Apple normally is one of the few, if only, companies that calibrates their computer, smartphone, and tablet screens. It's an extra step that takes more time and quality control and therefore cost. It's easy to see the difference if I look at my iPad 4 and Nexus 10 screen's side by side the Nexus 10 looks washed out in comparison with poor color and contrast because Samsung does not calibrate their screens.
But my understanding is that the new Nexus 7 screen is in fact calibrated.
I will be buying the new full size iPad when it comes out next month and the new Nexus 10 and possibly an iPad Mini if it has a retina display. I think the Nexus 7 forces Apple to go with retina display despite cost and impact on battery life and they really don't like impacting battery life. The iPad Mini retina screen also costs more because it's not 16:9 like the majority of TV and other screens out there but I certainly prefer the 4:3 7.9 inch Mini screen with much more available space and selection and quality of tablet apps. But there is room in my life for both. I'm geeky that way.

What is actually very typical is Android fans making incorrect statements about Apple devices. At least 80% of the negative remarks about Apple I see on these forums are flat out wrong. It's pretty amazing how many incorrect things people say about iOS here. What they get wrong the most is what can and cannot be done with iOS. Most of the anti-apple remarks are obviously from teenagers though so you know...who cares...

Apple - iPad - View all the technical specifications.

2048-by-1536 resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)

Apple - iPad mini - Technical specifications

1024-by-768 resolution at 163 pixels per inch (ppi)

the ipad 2nd gen is 1024x768 just like the mini. of course the ppi of the mini is higher due to the smaller screen

Apple

That might be your experience. But in this thread alone the claims being made by iPad mini fans have to be corrected by Android fans (screen resolution, GPS capability). So consider this the 20%.

I get that it was the right decision FOR YOU. Which is why I stated the following in what you quoted of me: " I wish it didn't bug me because I know that everyone has their own needs and preference."

I'm saying that I fully understand everyone has different preferences, and I wish that I didn't have the problem of getting frustrated when people prefer the lesser product. I know it's what they want, and it's their money so that's what matters. But like I said, if Apple made the Nexus 7 there's zero doubt in my mind that it would be dominating the market hands down and everyone would sing it's praises. And that is what frustrates me. The other side of the scenario that frustrates me, is that the logic for preferring one over the other changes to meet the product available. For example: When Samsung released the Galaxy Note 10.1, so many Apple fans were laughing at how they released a tablet with out of date screen resolution and how it was nonsense that they wouldn't go with a better screen. Now when Apple goes with the Mini, suddenly old screen technology is a non-issue and something else justifies the over priced device and somehow makes it better than everything else. It's magical to watch the debates unfold and transform based on what Apple has offered to their faithful.

Smh... really? See for yourself:

Apple - iPad mini - Technical specifications

Scroll down to "display".

iPad mini is 768x1024
iPad is 1536x2048

So the Mini has exactly half the resolution of the iPad. IF the iPad screen is exactly twice the size of the screen on the mini then yes, they have the same screen res. But I don't believe that to be the case. However, we're Android fans and 80% of the time we are wrong because we're teenagers. So........

Yeah, if theres a paid version of an app. 99% of the time I buy it even if it only removes ad support. I dont mind paying apps that work well for me.

I hate ads, I will happily pay for apps that do not have them. I'm also happy to pay for a better tablet experience. I do not expect developers to work for free.

Going by pixel count (two dimensions), the full size iPad has 4 times the pixels, and the area of the screen (two dimensions) is about 1.5 times the size. Going by pixel density/ppi (a one-dimensional measurement), the full size iPad has about 1.6 times the pixel density.

Couldn't have said it better myself. It is, indeed, sad to see a great device like the new Nexus 7, seem to get pushed away, because Apple didn't make it. If they did, all the news sites, and everyone would be singing the praises of the 'best device in the universe'. But since it is made by Asus, and runs Android, Apple fans point and laugh at it as if it was a wood block. I have used iPads before, and none of them come close to the portability, speed, and design that the new N7 offers.

Where do you see this happening? I am a pretty locked-in iPad user, as are lots of people I know. With these people, and in the Apple-centric on-line sites I frequent, I don't see any "pointing and laughing". I don't see any groundswell of people switching either, but not because of the product in particular. In fact, most of what I have encountered shows a decent amount of respect for the product. Even if people have no intent of buying it.
