Nexus 7 kick ipad mini's ****

Apple gets $0.90 and the developer gets $2.10. And it is not Apple telling you that. They are just the channel. The developer is the one deciding to optimize for tablets. As a developer, I can tell you that there is real work in properly converting an app from a phone to a tablet. This attitude of not wanting to pay three lousy dollars to reward developers for their effort, is a real issue for Android developers. No wonder there are so few Android optimized apps for tablets. The money just isn't there. You likely spend more every day on Starbucks, and yet you begrudge developers what is basically chump change. Why?

There is the occassion that an app is just good enough that I could use it once every few weeks, but not good enough that I want to pay for it. ESPECIALLY if the developer doesn't respond to questions or fix bugs when they arise. If the developer is good, I pay for the app. But sometimes an app simply does not play nice with my device, and I would rather test it on a free version than pay for it just to make the fun discovery later. I agree that people should pay for quality work. I do not however, feel that shoddy work deserves money JUST because someone sat there and wrote a crap application over a weekend. I haven't looked recently, but I do believe the last time I checked I had 4 paid apps to every 1 free app. So it's not like I refuse to give money when it's earned and deserved. Some might say that the developers need to make money in order to improve an app, but I am simply not going to be the financial guinea pig when chances are high I will never hear from the developer again.

Also as a side note, i'm pretty frugal. I do not go to Starbucks (i've drank one hot chocolate from them and it was provided to me at work), I bring a water bottle to work and fill it up from the water fountain. Occassionally I'll grab a Mtn Dew or Root Beer but that's maybe once or twice a month. The majority of my <$5 charges on my Credit Union acct history are to Google Play for music or apps. So I don't want to be painted as someone who refuses to pay developers for their work. I just don't toss it around like some might.

Yeah, if theres a paid version of an app. 99% of the time I buy it even if it only removes ad support. I dont mind paying apps that work well for me.

Maybe they are catching up but so far with the same apps that I have running on both, none of the Android apps that use daily have been updated to tablet versions.

Those app developers are just too lazy or think that because the OS will scale, them, they don't need a tablet version. Even the iPhone versions of those same apps beat the Android versions.

I too own both... the 7 is nice but I would NEVER sell my Mini... If I had to choose between the 2.. it's no contest...

See Ya 7...:-)

I'm sorry..
Who said I was trying to do ANYTHING FOR YOU.. ?

Why bother posting it unless you're trying to show everyone a comparison? I'm just saying you don't know how to post a comparison properly, there's no need to whine and moan about it.

I will have to agree. There is no comparison between my Nexus 7 and the Mini. My Mini will win every time.

This morning I put a new Nexus 7 on reserve at MicroCenter. You can do that if you have an account without paying for it online and just choose pay at store. I went to look at one before I decided to buy it. I didn't think it was a worthy upgrade for someone who already owns the first one. I still have till Wednesday at 9PM to decide if I want the Nexus 7 but I doubt that I'll be buying it. I'll likely save my money for the Next Mini, retina or not.

I still use my Nexus 4 and my Nexus 7 but I'll say it again here. If I had bought my iPad Mini instead of the Nexus 7, I never would have bought the Nexus 7.

why though? Not criticizing, just genuinely curious what your reasons are. For me, movie watching is one of my biggest tablet uses by far. But now after seeing how vivid paid HD movies are on my new N7 I'm realizing that purchasing HD movies on this device is going to cost me a small fortune, BUT I'm always going to feel like I'm shorting myself by settling for SD movies on this device so that's my quandry. I'm still in my return window, and the display on an iPad mini doesn't need to be 1080p to watch the large (and low cost) SD movie collection I already use. There's also no question that as nice as my N7 is, the Mini is more stable (I've had 3 random reboots in 4 days and 4.3 isn't playing nice with some 3rd party apps).
Another thing I'm unsure about is the performance of HD games on the Mini's 512 RAM.

I am lucky enough to own both.. but I too, am in my "Let's Live Together Before We Get Married Stage" and still have several days to return it...
I am leaning towards returning it.
Unlike most here who don't have the Experience.. I had my 7's Bootloader Unlocked, Rooted, A Custom Recovery installed and Scott's ROM installed before most here even knew how to enable "Developer Options".. So I have already taken my 7 beyond where most of these "Wanna Be Geeks" could ever imagine going with they're Tablets..
And.. Quite frankly.. I'm not that impressed.
My Tablet is Overclocked with a Custom Kernel to 1,890 mhz.. So, I have seen the best the Nexus-7 2013 has to offer...
Even in this Maxed Out State that I have taken mine.. It's still does not have the Refinement of the iPad Mini.. I have them BOTH.. So, I think that gives me a much better understanding of what they each bring to the table on a Real-World daily basis.. Don't get me wrong.. the Nexus 7 2013 is a Wonderful Tablet..Especially when you know how to truly unleash it's Raw Power...

But don't fool yourself.. There is NOTHING that can hold a candle to the iPad Mini.
Period.

The apps are #1. Too many of the apps that I have running on my Mini are not available in tablet versions on Android, they are just scaled up phone versions. Even Netflix has some added features on the iOS version that don't exist on the Android version such as automatically playing the next episode in a TV season.

I also thing the screen quality is a bit better as in color depth on the mini. I have over 5,000 HD TV shows that I bought in iTunes and over 200 HD movies bought in iTunes. Watching them on the mini, they just look so perfect in the quality and color depth. On the Nexus 7, the display is too white and bright. Turning the brightness well, just turns down the brightness and then it is too dim and not as white. Then there are times when tapping on a link does nothing. I have to zoom in on the page to actually get the link to work. The keyboard also is bad. I can't tell you how many times I'll be typing something and a key next to it or above or below gets typed when I clearly didn't press that key. I've watched it happen. I've had that happen on my Nexus 4 as well. When I want to type something, more times than not, I'll start to pick up the Nexus 7 and then stop because I think it's much easier to type it out using the Minis keyboard.

I like how Siri does things. I tell it so set a timer for 45 minutes and she does it. I tell my Nexus 7 to set a timer for 45 minutes and it sets an alarm for 45 minutes from now. I tell Siri to take me home and it automatically opens maps and plots a route to take me home. My Nexus 7 gives me a review of a 2011 comedy.

Then there is iTunes Match, Sure I have to pay for it, $24.95 a year but there are differences in it and Google Music. I get my play counts and last played dates synced back to iTunes when I play music stores on the cloud. Google Music doesn't do that. Also, I will get get Apples Radio thing coming up for free when it releases because I have iTunes Match.

I can go on and on.

You are so correct about the keyboard.. I had forgotten how precise the Mini's keyboard is in comparison.. and how easily you can just split it into a Thumb Keyboard with a gesture in landscape..
The 7 is cool.. but it really is not a Mini.. you really could go on an on like you said.. :-)
I'm pretty sure by this week's end, my 7 will be back in the hands of Walmart.

Make sure you have your own reasons to return it, don't go by what I have said or what anyone else has said. I can't return my Nexus 7 and I don't have to buy the new one. I also don't want to sell my Nexus 7 because it has some uses and it runs excellent on T-Mobile, not so good on AT&T.

just wondering because I don't have much experience with ipads, but since the N7 is basically just a tad larger than phablets, do you really find the scaling of phone apps a big deal? I could see it being an issue on a full sized iPad compared to a 10" Android tablet, but do you really feel you need a tablet-specific app scaling on a N7 compared to using that same app on a 5-6" android phone?

Can you do me a favor and comment on the quality of display on the free Transformers 2 HD movie that came with the N7 to the quality of an HD movie on your Mini? I was awestruck by that Transformer movie's quality! On a side note, do you mind me asking how much it cost you to buy 200 movies on iTunes? I've also noticed some occasional link tapping not being recognized.

Not a big fan of the N7 keyboard either but it's ok. How is word autocomplete on the Mini? do you get word autocomplete on its keyboard? That's a big thing for me.

There's a command for that in Google Now: "Driving directions to [location]" or something like that. We'll probably disagree about which is better between Siri vs. Google Now though ;)

Sorry to keep picking your brains, I'm just looking for as much info as I can. Also, do you game? I'm wondering how the performance of the Mini is when it comes to HD graphics intensive games. Any lag or other problems?

I can go on and on.
Feel free to add anything else you can think of.

I don't know how much my movies cost as a whole to buy but most of them, I wait until they are on sale for $10. I won't pay $15-$18 for a movie when it will eventually go on sale. I will agree that movies in HD on the 7 look sharper due to the increased pixels but they also look pretty amazing on my iPad.

As for apps, here is what I am talking about. Below is the Android version of the AP News app These were from June so the news is a bit old.

Now here is the iPad version:

This what people are talking about when they mention the app quality is better on iOS. There are actual tablet versions on iOS for many of the apps that don't have tablet versions on Android.

Also, the ipad does have some auto complete as well as auto correct. If I miss the space key, it separates the words automatically as well as adds punctuation so I don't have to.

ok thanks for all your help! I was just watching a couple of video comparisons and the pocketnow video mentioned that the Mini did have some frame rate issues with some of the more graphically intensive games. Since I do prefer the fairly intensive graphics games over the lighter weight 'angry birds' type of games, that had a pretty important impact on my shopping choices so I'm leaning towards two choices for now. I can either hang onto the N7 or return it and grab the iPad 5 which most leaks are suggesting will be significantly lighter, slimmer and a bit narrower than the iPad 4. It's beginning to look a lot like it'll be on the shelves very soon. The only issue I have is that thing is going to cost about $400 more than the N7 though, and I also discovered that iPads don't have GPS unless you buy the LTE versions.

I don't play any games so I can't tell you how they do on the Mini. You would probably want the full size iPad for that. Yes it is expensive and that is why I got the Mini 32GB AT&T version. I bought it open box at MicroCenter so I got $100 off the price. It was still completely wrapped with all accessories, just the box had been opened. My warranty started on the date I connected it to iTunes. All I had to do was upgrade to the latest OS.

I see a trend and it seems most cross platform apps are ports from ios and updates lag behind apple but if the devs gave a c and about android more they would most likely do it in native android it would be way better

Sent from my HTC One X+ using AC Forums mobile app

That could be possible but those devs have got to put in some work to get the apps there to begin with. Simply making a phone version for some apps and allowing the OS to upscale them on a larger screen is disappointing in many apps. I bought my Nexus 7 months before my Mini. App quality was the reason I felt I wanted a Mini after owning the Nexus 7. I felt like a kid at Christmas when I brought my iPad home. God that was exciting. I didn't feel that when I brought home my Mini and started installing apps.
