Nexus 7 or Samsung 7.7

After buying the Galaxy Tab 7 Wifi from Samsung, I will never buy another tablet from them again. While the tablet was nice enough, I didn't like all the Samsung bloatware and UI customization that was on it. And most of all, and I cannot stress this enough, I was extremely pissed off that they never produced even one software update for it (even though it needed one). In my opinion they have too many devices to support and are not interested in updating them in a timely manner because of the customization they have to put into it. Samsung would rather you buy their next, new and improved, tablet to get the latest software.

I am hoping that buying a Google Nexus product will mean I will get some form of software updates for as long as the hardware can support them.

The Samsung 7 plus is now being updated to ICS. You must use Kies to do it (not OTA) but i just updated mine today. Sweet! Samsung is notorious for being slow on updates.

You will love this one. Went into a staples to see if they had then in stock. The "tech dude" says...."oh No...we havent seen them in WEEKS...they are getting recalled due to screen and charging issues."
I researched online and see that the first batch had screen issues.....

So i went with the Nexus 7..arrives tomorrow.......but i still do like the 7.7 maybe because of the way the screen is laid out...less bezel...

But at the end of the day its $279 vs $600 (550 with tax)...

thanks again for everyones comments

I just got my Nexus 7... Love it! no regrets, Finally pure google!
But i have Epic touch, and i have to say different on performance is little if you don't game(i do)
Maybe Tab2 is a good option for $200... ICS is the big change this time around(and is awesome), very little or no difference to JB... IMO. Android is on a good place after hit of 4.0

Nexus 7 all the way.

Samsung totally dropped the ball on the tablet market, IMO. ASUS is kicking ass and taking names, has been since last year. Not only have they released tablets that are built better, but they are also better speced and cost less. On the software side of things, they are also usually quick to update their tablet line, even if the updates are bugfixers. You get the feeling they actually care to support their products for 10-12 months.

Samsung on the other hand, while they make beautiful hardware and totally own the Android phone market at the moment, their tablets have become stale. The Galaxy Tab 2 line was a complete joke because in many ways it was actually a total downgrade over the original Tab line, and they were way way overpriced. And for some reason, they cannot get their software support together. It took them 10 months to get ICS onto the Tab 10.1, and it's still MIA for some other sizes in their Tab line.

So for $199 (or $249, depending), you're getting an ASUS built Tegra 3 tablet with bone stock JB, with updates being handled directly by Google. It's a no-brainer IMO.

I actually played with a Sammie 7.7 Tab the other day. Have to say, though I expected to like it, I was pretty unimpressed by it. I found the TouchWiz interface to be...well..just terrible, and the screen had the typical AMOLED cartooniness that I'm really starting to dislike. I noticed a fair amount of lag swipping from homescreen to homescreen too.

However, the thing that stood out more than anything else was the awful ergonomics, at least in comparison to the Nexus 7. It just doesn't fit in your hands the way the N7 does, and holding it one handed will be impossible unless you have paws the size of Bigfoot's. A 7.7 tablet sounds deceptively similar to a 7" inch one, but that extra little increase in size dramatically changes the whole feel of the device..it's inching its way back into clunky iPad territory.

Personally, I can't ever envision a situation where I'd pay the extra money for the Samsung 7.7. In my eyes, it offers an inferior experience when compared to what you'd find with the N7. And, at minimum, it is officially WAY overpriced now that the era of high quality $200 tabs is upon us. If you don't want the N7, just wait..more cheap and powerful tablets will show up soon.

hyperbolic, clumsy critique of the 7.7

1)I'm 6'3" and the 7.7 is not impossible to hold. it's quite comfortable, and easy to hold one-handed.

2) 'standard' and 'dynamic' viewing modes are professional grade settings for artists and photographers working with HDRi, so your complaints are just ignorant of the gTab7.7's features.

3) exynos dual-cores out perform tegra 3's hands down.

4) yes, touch-wiz sucks. apex or nova launcher easily take the problem of lag out....especially if you upgrade to ICS, which of course, who wouldn't?

'playing' with a p6800 or i817 is NOTHING like owning one. ;-P

Ditto. Easy decision. I have an N7 and I don't know why you would even consider another small tablet.

Wrong.

The snapdragon s4 dual core is on par with the Tegra 3. The snapdragon s4 beats samsung's exynos dual core. Nothing out there in a production model beats the Tegra 3 'hands down'.

the upcoming exynos quad core will beat a tegra 3, but that's upcoming, and can't be bought, and definitely can't be bought for $199.

Also the upcoming quad core snapdragon is going to beat the snot out of anything on the market (nothing with that processor has a launch date yet that I've seen, so going to be MoNTHS down the road). If you are a processor snob, wait for that. If you're not, get a Nexus 7, the Tegra 3 simply is on top of the heap, or only slightly behind the snapdragon s4, depending on your benchmark of choice. Nothing can be bought for $199 that comes even close to the Tegra 3 though.

True N7 beat 7.7 in performance testing. Quick Google search brings up a few comparisons. Though Sammy's hardware is nice, it quickly becomes stale do to the lack of software updates. N7 will be fresh for a couple of years. N7 is what I will be spending my dollars on.

I have the Sammie 7.7 and put cm10 on it. Love it! :-) I bought on launch day at vzw , but the price was a hard chunk to swallow. That being said, I absolutely love this tab. It flies and is buttery smooth with cm10. Video files play very well and the display...... let's just say it is spectacular. Netflix plays quite well. Clarity is purely mind boggling. Nexus 7 is a fantastic tab and Asus is a top notch manufacturer. No knocks on that tab at all. Just wanna give my 7.7 some love too. The software upgrade and tweaks make this tablet fantastic. I am not a big person and do not have big hands, but have never felt that this tab is uncomfortable in any way. Light as a feather, yet feels sturdy and high end with the aluminum backing. Love the small bezel. Makes the screen seem bigger. SD card slot and lte make this tab a unique winner IMO. Lte is awesome and for me, a self admitted media junkie, swapping SD cards means I can have an unlimited library with me and not need to stream media and destroy battery life by doing so. On a flight, this may be an issue. I can watch 3.5 hours of Netflix before my battery gets below 50%. Awesome. All in all, I love my tab. Love the nexus too. Might have bought it myself if I didn't have this one. If a ten inch nexus drops from Asus with nexus branding, I'm gonna be first in line. :-) Just giving my gtab some love. :-) aloha!

Glad to see someone else loving the 7.7 :). I like the bigger screen size, build quality and light weight (plus built in 3G does save a huge amount of hassle when out and about). The only pain is the slow ROM updates from Sammy. Having said that, how are you finding CM10. I thought the only version on XDA was still very alpha and not ready for daily use. Would you really recommend flashing ? What have you found that doesn't work ?

My first phone was a Samsung Galaxy SII. Took well over a year to update to Gingerbread - everyone else was out in 6 months. The Nexus will always have the latest software without the delay necessary to retrofit all the Samsung overlay. This alone is a huge benefit. For this reason, I will probably stick to Nexus devices from now on.

And for the price of the Sammy you can get 2-3 Nexus 7s. I got one for my kids because they always wanted to use mine. Awesome device.

I have the vzw version and mobile data isn't working yet, so I can't speak of 3g or lte. The forums over at xda and rootz all say the euro versions do fine with data mostly. Some scattered issues, but if you flash using instructions from dev, you should be fine. Ics and jb both fly and are stable for me. Netflix, you tube, browsing, and using mail and calendar all are fine. Can't wait to see how mobile data works. Glad there's some roms for it at all though. If you don't want to try jb, go ics its great too. At least until cm10 is more stable. I'm loving it though. Solid tab. Not sad being an owner like the og gtab. That was horrible. :-) Aloha! :-) happy flashing!

You're an amusing guy, Altheus. Thanks for chiming in.

so the Nexus 7 came in today. Not bad. Very snappy. But i really feel the Samsung display is MUCH better. I feel handicapped without LTE and No SD card...going to take it to Verizon store in the AM and compare the 2.....wondering with the Samsung Tab 2 coming out if Verizon is going to drop the price on the 7.7

If you like overly saturated cartoon colors, you'll prefer the Samsung. If you have a phone and a flash drive than the last two are fairly irrelevant.

My thoughts exactly. I've expressed this in other threads, but I never realized how unrealistic my Gnex's screen colors were until I picked up my Nexus 7. They are overly saturated in the extreme, and really do have a certain cartoon vibe to them..bright and vibrant, sure, and in that sense pretty...but not even close to accurate. I got the same impression from the Samsung 7.7's screen, though I admittedly didn't spend much time with it. I don't know..suppose I'm becoming a bit of an LCD screen convert.

Take a look at a One X sometime. You'll love it.
