Nexus 7 will lead Android tablets to overtake the iPad

iphones had the same iconic nature they do now before Android came out. It was the ultimate cool thing to have. Android still overtook it. Android is still selling more devices now...... I haven't heard you give any reason why the current trend is going to change.

The iPhone actually has changed since its arrival. At first it was a trendy "Starbucks" sort of cult device. It is now a home defacto brand in the hands of (father in law included) people who can barely navigate a PC.

What people fail to take away from the numbers is that Apple devices have actually increased in popularity over the years. Androids numbers are either stolen from poor visionary RIM or simply the growth of the smartphone market in general, third world markets included. It in no way is cannibalising "i" device sales by any huge margin.
More i devices are in hands of people today than ever before..FACT.

How many examples do you need about a strong long term Apple dominance? Ipads as productivity devices in public schools not enough? How about the government agencies that buy them by the truckload to replace laptops ? How about the fact that I can get way more premium accessories and gear like audio receivers with Apple connections than industry standard USB ports!?

They have been fantastic in the short term but Android has some serious homework to do for long term sustainability.

P.S. Ask any of those kids 10 and under what makes their Android device different from their buddies iPhones, they'll likely give you a blank stare. Ask a kid above 10, they'll probably say my folks didn't want to get me an iPhone.

Until the android tablet has a cell radio with stand alone pricing, an idiot proof interface that a child can use and not render inoperable, and a build quality comparable, it won't displace the IPAD. so I would say there is a little work to be done. My relatives with Iphones have them because they dont want to learn how to use a feature, they just want it to work out of the box, if that limits its abilities thats fine with them as long as it does what its advertised to do with little input from them

Most people don't seem to care about cell radios. Stats show the vast majority of iPads sold are WiFi. The are several Android phones with better build quality than the iPhone, with a higher production cost as well. And not everyone Wants their device designed for idiots. The fact that Android is dominating the smartphone market proves that.

RIM didn't give them their market share. Feel free to look at actual data. The chart's listed in the first post of this thread for example. The percent of the smartphone market that Apple owns has gone DOWN perpetually ever since the release of Android. Apple may be selling more devices, but the market is growing and Apple is not growing with it, at least not at all compared to Android. I find it ironic that you ask if IPads in school and in the government are not enough prove that Apple will retake the market, after 2 people specifically mentioned to you the parallel of Apple Macs being the most popular and hip computers ninth the 80s/90s, being used in nearly every classroom and government agency, with children everywhere wanting a Mac for christmas, only to fall to the diversity in price and devices of Windows. Windows certainly wasn't hip. And guess what happened when Windows dominated the market? People started only making apps for windows, to appeal to the widest range of customers. And that was the end for the Mac as a mainstream product.

Android's been fantastic in the short term!? Android has been taking marketshare at an increasing rate for over 2 years.

Again, your statement about kids holds no merit. Besides the fact that most 10 year old can't tell the difference between an android or an iPhone, if you'd asked a kid in 1990 if he wanted a PC or a Mac he'd say he wants a Mac. That whole Mac From Santa campaign proved that. And Macs are still a niche. Your only point is "Apple products are hip and I like them, so I think every piece of market data is false, and people are suddenly going to stop buying Android devices and Apple will magically retake the market share. Yay!". Face facts, man.

I'm sorry, but just because a device is hip and you like it doesn't mean it will dominate the market.

I've heard there are plenty of apps that's don't work on the older I phones. Pretty sure only the iPhone 4/4s variants will be getting os6. That's not to say android doesn't have any fragmentation. Anyway, windows has plenty of apps that aren't backwards compatible, it hasn't hurt their market share.

The 3GS is getting iOS 6 too. The third gen iPod touch gets the cut on this upgrade cycle for Apple.

Well, I would say that's not a surprise since iOS 6 has no real advancements in system architecture and that it's basically iOS 5 with some new apps, bit then I would just sound like a nitpicker.

I thought that as well, but the apps I create for myself to sell do better on the App Store. When my clients request apps however, 70% request Android, and the rest iOS. Mainly because when I develope corporate apps, I push for Android because I don't have to deal with the Apple App Store at all.

Looking forward to seeing your game btw.

For internal/company apps, I agree going Android makes distribution much easier.

Curious, and no worries if you don't want to share, but what would you say the percentage breakdown between your iOS and Android app revenues are?

I'm curious as well. And what type of apps do you develop? Any games, or anything in GML? If so how hard much work is it to make apps for both platforms. I only have experience with deving apps for Android.

I forgot to include in my previous post that the iHerds are also the thinnest-skinned, easily butthurt emo crybabies, but the hysterical overreactions sorta made the point for me.

Even allowing for the undying blind loyalty of the iHerds, it's going to be a futile effort to challenge the iPad unless the app picture improves. As I said before the hysterical iHerds took over the thread, the N7 is inferior to the Fire at the moment and I'm not particularly sanguine about things improving soon.

The N7 is the best slab of hardware running the latest OS, but without enough WORKING apps, it's nothing.

I have had zero issues with apps not working. All the apps that at least I use... work fantastic.

So? Are you saying that there isn't a big list of very popular apps that don't work on JB just because you haven't seen any?

Dam dude, you are totally missing the point actually. Apple devices have evolved from a hip and cool fashion statement of a device to something much much more universal.

I personally hate the apple ecosystem but I've got virtually no solid reasons to convince the dozens of friends I have leaving Android behind why they should stay. Yeah... stay and put up with crappy accessories, missing productivity options, and a fragmented android experience that is completely different from person to person. Yes and continue to have to work to make things work the way they should have out the box.

Taking one of my apps for example, both released to each platform at the same time, Android wins hands down with double the revenue. It depends on the type of app though. Games seem to do slightly better on iOS.

I create whatever my clients want. My last app is called MyMakeup 101, on both platforms. Another app I just did for myself was to experiment with HTML 5 and JQuery Mobile. It's called Draw Something Friends. Currently on the Play store, and waiting for approval on the App Store. I used PhoneGap to compile to a native app. I just wanted to see how easy it would be to create a cross platform app. Give it a try. I store nothing locally so when a user changes devices, all their data will be there when they login to the app again.

Lol @ analogy of pre-internet era MAC usage and world iconic "i" device parallels. Completely different ballgame in a completely different era with a completely different business model.

Oh not to mention an accesory catalog that pretty much works to frustrate handfuls of Android people to go to iOS anyway. The "ipod" ready treadmills, cars, radios, yeah lets completley ignore these branding elements as well....:-X

Also rather shocking you've never heard an "i" device specifically mention on an airline, or maybe its just a Jetblue thing.

Edited to be concise

People are fickle. Just as we still call them Q-tips we most often buy store brand. We may still say Hoover (actually that one is fading finally) but we buy Dyson, Kenmore, or old school Electrolux. You can modify your example to exclude anything you want to but in the end it still just proves that people are still fickle about what they like. Microsoft used to rule the world, now outside of their OS they are lame. Lava Lamps used to be in many homes, now other than the creepy guy you keep your kids away from they are rare.

If anything the brand associations you mention hurt Apple. It takes their cool away. What's left when you do that? I think someone here coined the term "jitterbug of smart phones." If Apple loses it's identity then they lose everything.

In all honesty I don't expect Apple to go anywhere anytime soon. I do expect them to within 2 years start to mirror their computer counterpart and go back into the niche. Here's the thing, Apple was small and able to make some strange choices. Some of them hit (iPhone, iPad) some didn't (Newton, Apple TV, others). Lately they've done well but no one rules forever. Ask Kellog's about Pep Cereal if you doubt me.

Seriously please read this. It's very interesting and not to long. It's written by a wall street journal analyst walking about exactly what we are. http://www.forbes.com/sites/investor/2012/07/26/without-steve-jobs-apple-has-all-the-appeal-of-dell/

Man, I don't think Microsoft really had anything great outside their OS. They sure had a whole lot of failed attempts to get out of the OS market. Though now, they have the Xbox at least.

Man if Apple wants to get back to where they were before Steve jobs dies, they should hire Steve Wozniak as CEO. Jobs never held a candle to him when it came to creativity.

Woz isn't a business man. He'd be a better fit at Google oddly enough.

Thanks for the link. Amazing article and a true evaluation of apple now and when it will be in the future. Apple died when Jobs did to sum it up.

Wtf? That article is basically saying "Jobs was a genius and it will be a tough act to follow him up ergo Apple's royally boned." Really, that's the best credible source we can find to predict Apple's return to mediocrity?

So wait, Android doesn't have its fare share of mountains to climb for long term success? Namely Apple continuing to dominate the general public's mindshare? This thread seriously wreaks of fandroidism x10.

Newsflash the reasons why I or any of you prefer android to iOS most people couldn't give a rats ass about. Customization, open source, form factor choice, swappable batteries, widgets... please. Apple is OK not catering solely to the cool and trendy crowd. They are OK with grammar school kids and grandma's toting their stuff around, incredible margins say so. #moneytalks
