No lock on the GPS

Stupid question but have you rebooted the device?

I reboot it all the time. I tried the fix posted on the home page of this site last night and still no luck. Looks like this one is going back to the store.

I may just go back to the iPhone. As bad as I hate Apple, the phone just worked better than this one....which is disappointing considering it was only a 3G (i.e. two generations old).

Have you tried the GPS fix that was posted on the front page? (maybe in this thread as well)

Mine was working fine... I tried the suggested tweak on the AC home page and now I can't get lock. Even went back to the original setting. Grrrrr

Sorry to hear that, should work fine. If you put it back to the normal settings and it still does not work you may have another issue.

Sorry if this fix has been posted before, I scanned through it and didn't see it, but someone over at Gps fix 101 - xda-developers posted the following:

1 - Disable "Use Wireless Networks" - Settings / Location & Security

2 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*

3 - Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based

4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]

5 - REBOOT

6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"

7 - PRAISE GOD

----------------------------------------------------------------
PS - If you need to get back to default here are the specs

DEFAULT - OPERATION MODE - Standalone
Server - www.spirent-lcs.com
Port - 7275

I was having trouble getting a lock myself, but found that after following these directions, it seems to work much better. I don't quite get a GPS lock inside, but I don't expect to receive one there.

I put all back to the original settings and rebooted again and finally got lock.... good luck!

After changing the settings as per this fix, my GPS is getting a lock even quicker than before. I'd say it went from taking a minute or two down to 30 seconds or less. Even works indoors.

I guess this is going to be a deal breaker for me. None of these settings or fixes work. I can only get a very poor lock using the wireless networks (usually up to a mile off), but have only gotten one true GPS lock in 4 days of trying.

I went to my ATT store yesterday and couldn't get a lock with their demo unit either. Salesperson swapped out my SIM card, but that didn't do anything.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I do not have any confidence that a firmware update is going to help me.

If you are going to bring the phone back, how long do you have to do so? If I were you, I would wait another week or so to see if an update is released or of Samsung decides to do something about the problems they are having. Might be worth it, unless you NEED the gps. If they don't release an update or, after the update, you still aren't satisfied, then just return it.

Once the GPS is working, it is a great little phone. It would suck to be in your position and have to return it because of something like this.

Here's my update:

I finally took the phone back to the store and exchanged it for a new one. Tried the GPS in the store and it wouldn't lock any better than mine.

Left the store and tried the fix from this site and.......SUCCESS. It locks me to within about 5 meters in about 10-15 seconds.

Here's the thing. This new one seems different from my other one. The soft keys at the bottom have a "texture" look when backlit that I do not think my other one had. My old one also had a scratch near those keys when the lights came on that I didn't put there. Also, I've noticed that this one doesn't display the 3G symbol when I'm on WiFi.Perhaps I got a unit this time from a different/newer build this time?

The one I have also has soft keys that have a textured look to them too. I never really had huge problems with the GPS though. I would be interested to hear if other people do or don't have that textured look to the soft keys.

I have the textured look behind the keys and have issues with the GPS. I also don't have the 3G showing while in wifi.

My soft keys have the textured look. I'm not sure if they looked like that or not on my first one (wouldn't hold a signal, but gps worked). Once I got my new one, it wouldn't lock on (gps), but after trying several sets of settings, it's finally working (inconsistent indoors, locks on everytime when outdoors)...

*Applause* Glad to keep you on the winning team!

I have the textured background on my softkeys, too. Your guess is as good as mine as to why some do, some don't.

Glad you've finally got working GPS. I love using Google Maps/Nav with mine.

OK. After much effort (and sitting outside with a clear view to the southern sky) I used the following to get GPS lock on 10 Satellites. [I am in Dallas]:

*#*#1472365#*#*

Application Settings/Operation Mode/GPS Plus ON
Application Settings/Operation Mode/SkyHook/ON (VERY IMPORTANT)
SUPL/CP Settings/Server FQDN Type/AUTO Config
SUPL/CP Settings/Server/[it will enter a long string in the box when you select AUTO config]
SUPL/CP Settings/Server Port/7275
SUPL/CP Settings/SUPL Secure Socket/Off

Tested and found I had GPS lock on 10 satellites. (I did NOT reboot after making the changes)

I then uninstalled and reinstalled Google maps

turned on "Wireless networking" under Setting/Location & Security

Opened Google maps clicked "my location" it found me and the opened navigator and for the 1st time it had GPS lock.

Hope this helps!

Thanks pal! I was able to fix my problem previously and get a lock but it wasn't performing well (taking a while to get a lock). Decided to try auto config with my set of settings and bam! Very quick lock on....:)
