No lock on the GPS

My success was short lived. 1 sat no lock. WTF?

Ive experienced something similar. One minute, I'll go outside and get a lock in seconds. The next minute, I'll try it and it'll take forever. And right when I'm walking back indoors, giving up, it'll lock on. I hope Samsung releases a patch.

This needs to be fixed ASAP or I have to swap out to another device. I used my iphone as my GPS with TomTom app. Need GPS to work on my phone. As important as any other app.

I am curious if any of the other Galaxy S phones (siblings) are also have GPS issues or if this is just a model specific issue. Anyone?

Definitely....No matter what settings I try, it's still inconsistent and takes too long for a lock (when it actually does lock). Being that GPS is not a necessity for myself, I won't be grabbing another device. Rather, I'll be waiting on the firmware patch Samsung was rumored to be working on.

... and my GPS is dead again, too. I had a couple days of perfect functionality but this past weekend, no lock. GPS Test can "see" 7-12 sats at any given time, but no lock.

Same result here. Tricorder app often shows 8 or 9 sats, but no lock occurs, even after waiting a LONG time. On rare occasion I get a location fix. How on earth did this get past quality control???

My concern is that Samsung is going to wait until their Froyo release to roll out a patch for this (and that assumes the GPS hardware itself isn't DOA). Word is Froyo won't be coming out until mid-September for the international Galaxy S models. I imagine it will be even later for AT&T to roll it out.

Unless there is a clear statement from Samsung or patch released in the next couple of weeks, it looks like the phone will have to go back. So sad, since there are no other good Android choices on AT&T...

Well, as I said in another GPS thread, this morning on my way to work I was using GPS Test and it locked on perfectly to EVERY satellite it could see... at some points I was actually locked to 9 or 10 at one time. So, the GPS works, but does need a software update to be more consistent. I've also decided that GPS reception is lousy in general at my house, but at my office, inside, I can see plenty of sats and occasionally get locks.

Mine's not working well again either. No lock at all yesterday when I tried.

I am pessimistic about this ever being fixed. From what I understand, Samsung has a very poor track record for updating phones - their devices pretty remain as released. Keep in mind that this glaring problem has been around for months in Asia and elsewhere outside of the US without any clear fix released by Samsung.

Samsung is really trying to take over a big chuck of smartphone market share with the Galaxy S (and upcoming Galaxy Q) line of phones, so I'm still confident that there will be a fix at some point. As far as I can tell through searches and different articles and forum posts, the GPS issue wasn't really brought forward until the phones were available in the US. And only people who are interested in GPS in the first place are going to notice. I asked at the ATT store when I bought my case about how the Captivate is doing and I was told they've sold quite a lot of them, but nobody has complained about the GPS yet. The salesperson admitted that most of the people buying them didn't have a clue or care about the GPS functions, anyway.

OK. After much effort (and sitting outside with a clear view to the southern sky) I used the following to get GPS lock on 10 Satellites. [I am in Dallas]:

*#*#1472365#*#*

Application Settings/Operation Mode/GPS Plus ON
Application Settings/Operation Mode/SkyHook/ON (VERY IMPORTANT)
SUPL/CP Settings/Server FQDN Type/AUTO Config
SUPL/CP Settings/Server/[it will enter a long string in the box when you select AUTO config]
SUPL/CP Settings/Server Port/7275
SUPL/CP Settings/SUPL Secure Socket/Off

Tested and found I had GPS lock on 10 satellites. (I did NOT reboot after making the changes)

I then uninstalled and reinstalled Google maps

turned on "Wireless networking" under Setting/Location & Security

Opened Google maps clicked "my location" it found me and the opened navigator and for the 1st time it had GPS lock.

Hope this helps!

Thanks...let's hope this holds up.

Finally got it working!

What finally fixed it all for me was the inclusion of "Skyhook" (ON) and I believe SPLU Secure Socket (OFF).

Along with that: I left hot start ON, server is "supl.google.com" (without quotes), and GPS plus is ON.

I was surprised that even in my apartment, with no help from "wireless networks," it was able to connect within 10 seconds on Google Maps.

10 seconds, within 10 meters of accuracy. Gotta love the Android community for what they do. Phenomenal job guys.

This fixed it for me after I did a reboot and tried while outside under the open sky (not from a window or in a car). Now it pulls 6-7 satellites pretty fast.

How do you know how many satellites? Is there a sitting or something that tells you?

When you punch in the code to edit the GPS settings, there is a test you can run that will show how many satellites you see. It begins empty, but wait a little bit.
