No Official ICS for LG Optimus V :(

I'm sitting on a 2003 Thinkpad T30, 2.2ghz with 1gb of ram. For a desktop I have an old P4 3.2 ghz with 4gb of ram [running at 3gb]

I have a Tri-core AMD based system waiting for a power supply in the corner collecting dust.
(I'm a father of 2, with a wife in college, and living off what I make as a gas station crewleader. Sucks but I get 40+ hours in a really bad area economically)

Jealous to say the least.
Thankyou for using that hardware to build wonderful roms!

I have a lot of nice equipment because this is what I do.
I work on systems slower than yours all day (virus infected, less than a gig of ram, etc...), so I do sympathize.

By the way,
I picked up a Cooler Master 460watt(?) from Newegg for the old desktop, normally $39, but I had a code for $29. Watch them for deals and you can get a psu for cheap, then reload the P4 for the wife and kids. If you want I can send you the link and code, it's more than enough for that tri-core.

Look for sales, another 8gigs of DDR3 is only about $30. More is better than faster (I.M.O.)

My old quad system was nice, and I know many drooled over it, but the new one absolutely crushes it.

Thanks. Since you seem to know modern hardware well, would you mind giving some advice? (this is getting kinda OT, I guess .. hope nobody minds too much).

My box was setup to be a htpc (mythtv) about 5 years ago. It's in a case that requires a microatx mobo and I've always been partial to amd, so I've currently got an asrock K10N78M with an athlon x2 (orleans? winchester? forgot exactly) and 2gb of ram. This is obviously not a server box but, as I mentioned, I think I can stuff in a quad cpu and 8gb. I can't find 4gb ddr2/1066 sticks on newegg but I've read it's challenging to make the ram actually clock at that speed anyway, and I fully agree that more ram is better than faster ram.

So here's my shopping cart on newegg:

Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 830 Deneb 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDX830WFK4DGM - Processors - Desktops
Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER DK9-7E52A-0L-GP CPU Cooler
Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 4GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model 991762

Obviously the ram is waaay higher than you say it should be, and I see that ddr3 is in-line with your estimate. What gives? Is newegg ripping me off? Can I find the ram elsewhere for a reasonable price? Is ddr3 backward compatible? Is my system so hopelessly outdated that selling it and upgrading would be more cost effective?

Of course, if anyone has a pair of working 4gb ddr2/800 sticks laying around, I'd be happy to make a reasonable offer. :)

DDR2 is tons more expensive than DDR3 due to supply and demand getting broadsided by the recession. Just before the recession hit, the industry was ready to change over to DDR3, so the manufacturers began switching production lines. Then the recession hit, and both enterprise and consumer purchasing of the newest hardware took a beating. However, people still want to upgrade their memory at times they can't afford an entire new system. Most people's current systems are probably over a year or two old, and may not support DDR3. In the past two years, people in this category have grabbed eaten up so much DDR2 inventory, and the manufacturers have so much less capacity for building it, causing the price of it to skyrocket. If things don't turn around in purchasing by enterprise, and consumers turn more and more to tablets, there could be a few memory manufacturers going under this year (short-sellers headsup ;)).

Good news for the consumer, DDR3 is dirt cheap:

I'm not too worried about being off topic, the main thread died a bit back.

There are two problems with your plan Tdm.

The first is, can your board support 8gigs. Some boards, especially older ones, say they can, but downclock the memory or fail to boot unless it is very specific memory. The second part is what Jerry said, DDR2 is very expensive right now.

Currently:
Newegg wants $129 minimum for 2 sticks of 4gb DDR2.
For $34 you can get 2sticks of 4gb ddr3, and a board to support it (up to 16gb) for about $50.
So you have a choice, $129 for memory, or $85 for an upgrade which leaves you in a better spot to upgrade later. Even if you only buy a single stick of memory, it's STILL equal or cheaper to change the board to DDR3. 4gigs is enough, but my advice, spend the extra money and get 8gigs.

This was my reason for the whole upgrade on mine. 16gigs (4 sticks of 4gigs each) would have run me $300. My board could handle it, but my SSD was already running at half speed. Worse still, no one makes a good DDR3 board with 4 slots that fits an older Core2Quad. $300 will buy an I5 and 16 gigs of memory, another $100 would get me a board. It simply didn't make sense. I hmmm'd and haww'd over it for a few months and then finally went for it when I found out my SSD was running at half speed.

Keep in mind, 4 gigs is plenty, even for games. Pretty much only artists and professionals will need more, however, the extra breathing room is nice. 16gigs, is like using a firehose to water your yard, it's overkill, but it's fun and get's it done very fast.

In a similar vein to what Jerry said,
Hard drives are in a similar boat, flooding in Thailand has damaged the industry and prices have more than doubled in some case. On the plus side, I saw a 120GB SSD on sale for $130 yesterday. By the end of the year SSD will almost be standard on most notebooks and many desktops.

Edit:
That cooler will not handle your processor. That processor is 95 watts, the cooler is made for 65 watt cpus.
This on the other hand is a little beast of a cooler if it will fit your case, and it will fit a wide range of processors.

Thanks for the helpful feedback.

Looks like I can save $80 on the order by getting a new motherboard. Maybe I can sell the existing mobo/cpu/ram as a unit -- or scrounge a cheap case, toss in a drive, and put together a system to sell as a cheap desktop. I'm sure I'll think of something... :)

I rebuilt my T30, nice cheap toy is keeping me happy for now. I installed Lubuntu on it, lighter on ram than Xubuntu. My tri-core is waiting for tax season. More upgrades for it.

I forgot to mention, the kids are soon to be 2 and 4. they aren't ready to pc time lol. I can't wait for my wife to graduate and find a job, then it will be my turn to go.
