No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6 for me

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

Whether or not the battery is removable isn't the same issue as the size of the battery. It's helpful to consider those things separately.

Based on what I know now I think the size of the N6's battery is about right -- but I'd like to be able to switch it easily.

Imagine if Tesla made a car with built-in batteries -- the implication: if the battery goes bad you should buy a new car.

Well... considering that the Tesla battery was tested by a 3rd party that estimates its battery to retain 80-85% of its capacity after 100k miles. The average person drives 13.5k miles/year, so will still have 80-85% battery capacity remaining after about 7 1/2 years. I'd wager the typical Tesla owner will have moved on to a newer car in that time. Same is likely for a Nexus user - most will move on within 2-3 years, so should be fine.

That's not to say there isn't convenience to be gained from having a battery that's easy to swap, but there are advantages to having it sealed as well (e.g., better structural integrity of the phone, less exposure of internal components, higher quality OEM battery typically used, etc).

1-2 years? I can't seem to keep a phone longer than 6 months...

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

There hasn't been one phone made that did not have at least one potential deal-breaker in somebody's eyes. Whether it be removable battery, size of internal battery, camera, size of internal storage or lack of SD card support, to it would not allow me to **** excellence while using it. I personally don't care for the Note 4. Will I go on the Note 4 forum and say so? No. I keep looking for a phone I do want and when I find it, then talk about it amongst others who want the phone too. Like the Nexus 6. I am hoping that in less than 8 hours I can pre-order this bad boy, get some sleep and look forward to getting it soon. And hope that review start to come out with some pictures and videos...

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

I can't recall a smart phone that I've ever owned that could go 6 - 7 hours of total screen time without a top charge here and there.... With my Nexus 5... 3 - 4 hours of "Screen" time is AMAZING.... 2 - 3 is more realistic.... So much so I have two chargers at home (Kitchen and bedroom), one on my desk at work to set on when not using and another in the car.....

I always make sure to try and plug it up about 2 hours before leaving work for the day.. I always throw it on a wireless charging mat at home when I am in the shower, cooking or doing something that doesn't require me to have my phone on me... if I know I am going to be in the car for more than 30 minutes I plug it up so when I get to my destination I am at or near 100%.....

if the Nexus 6 can go 5 - 6 hours of actual SCREEN ON TIME that would be amazing.....

I get more than that with my extended battery in LG OGP

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

I've just learned to adjust..... Specially since now batteries don't need to be fully drained before charging for fear of losing a lot of battery life... I just try and make sure my device gets a top charge any time I am not using it... Exactly why I love Qi wireless charging... that's my primary charging option outside my car... Just set it down and top it off here and there.... I bet I set my phone down and pick it up off the wireless charger 20 times a day.... If I know I am going out tonight I make sure "Hey we are meeting up at 8:30?" Okay make sure the phone is on the charger by 7:00 at the latest so I can get a good hour of boost before I leave for the night.....

Forward thinking.... LOL!!!!

translation: Your phone lives off the charger and does not even make it one day without a second charge. Chargers everywhere. In the office, in the car, etc.

I did the same thing, 2 or 3 charging sessions per day and wore out the USB port in the phone. Then got tired of it.

I primarily use Qi Wireless charging... I only plug my phone up via USB in the car on long drives... My N5 has probably seen a USB plug a dozen times if that... It's a slower charge but I am at work 9 - 10 hours a day 5 days a week.... and I can't be on the phone all day so I just have it on the wireless charger... basically every time I take it off it's at 100%........ it's mostly off the charger from the time I leave work at 4 until 10 pm and then back on... on the weekends I take it off when I get up and set it down here and there while at the house.. the weekends are usually the worse as I am not near the charger as much as during the work week so I've run into battery issues on the weekend being out and about....

Hopefully with the N6 and Lollipop battery life is a lot better...

Kind of like race car drivers... They will drip down pit road for a splash of gas any time they can.... All that power saps the juice.....

If I understand you correctly, you don't have a problem with other people having a non-removable battery. You simply want the option of getting a Nexus 6 with a removable battery.

You're basically advocating for more choice, which is something I think almost everyone can get behind.

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

Great phone, the specs seem really nice including the 2560x1440 resolution that should match the screen size well. But the lack of a user-removable battery is a deal breaker for me.

The phone of this caliber seriously needs a 10,000 mAh cell, at least optionally (such as zerolemon, etc.) because of the increased drain the higher resolution will require.

I have a Note 4... Big screen... High resolution... 3220 battery and it lasts a long time. Yes I can replace when needed but it doesn't require a 10k mAh battery to live.

It's good to hear the positive experience from another owner of a smartphone with a removable battery.

If Google decides to implement a removable battery in another Nexus phone, I don't think there would be anything to worry about.

That is correct. They should offer more choices, a basic model and a high capacity battery model.
So you can choose whichever one suits you better. One that's as thick as a credit card and poor runtime and the other thicker and a day of screen time.

Another option would be some kind of rubberized cover instead of buying otterbox and stuff which I see many people doing.

A coworker got the new iphone 6 and just dropped it so the screen is completely destroyed. I am sure he will get some rubber cover the second time.

I think that's reasonable. Besides, I haven't heard anyone make a compelling argument against having more choices.

For example, LG made two variants of the G2. Most people are familiar with the standard model, which has a non-removable battery. However, the South Korean variant had a removable battery.

It makes me wonder if South Korean customers do something different where it makes sense to have a removable battery. What happens if a South Korean travels overseas? Do they magically change their behavior so that they don't need a removable battery?

Why not offer both versions to everyone? Smartphone companies can be a little odd at times.

I literally lol'd at this.
You want to add a battery the size of a phone, to an already gigantic phone with a gigantic battery. #MakesPerfectSense

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

Most reviews of the 10,000mah batteries I've seen for phones like the Note 3 seem to indicate 10-12 hours of screen time. I was getting 6 and change on average with the Note 4, so I'm sorry, but tripling the thickness of an already huge phone for 4-6 hours of additional screen time just doesn't fly for me.

Then there are the logistics of it. The average person spends 15-16 hours awake per day, how is 5-6 hours of screen time not acceptable? What kind of sad life does a person lead where they need 10+ hours of screen time on their phone? The argument by most is they like not having to charge daily or ever top off, but OP already said he doesn't care about idle time, so it implies he literally wants to stare at his phone for over 10 hours a day and that makes me sad.

The other argument is that people use extended batteries for special occasions when they know they can't charge, like camping. Again, OP isn't talking about that and is talking about daily use...

I agree with this. I get really good screen on time .. And I have a spare Samsung charger / battery so when I get low -- quick swap and good to go :).

Is there an area of compromise? If 10,000 mAh is too much, how about 4000 mAh as an optional model? In this scenario, the 3220 mAh stock battery on the Nexus 6 would still be available for those who want it.

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

Are people also forgetting that this thing has Turbo Charging capabilities. 15 mins and you get 80% of your battery back.

Size, cost, personal UI preferences, expandable media are all subjective reasons to pass on the Nexus 6 if so inclined. Battery life and size should NOT be one of those reasons.

Re: No removeable battery is a deal-breaker for Nexus 6

Designing a phone with a removable back gives the consumer a choice: buy a spare battery and pop it in when needed, or ignore the removable back and use the phone as if the back doesn't come off.

IMHO: huge, heavy batteries (built-in or not) are a bad idea. Making the handset much heavier would not go over well with the general public either, I'm pretty sure.

Everyone is free to decide which features matter most to them. Battery life and size may not be important to you, but it may be important to someone else.
