Not again... Note 9 Fire Alleged in Lawsuit

I thought that was a temp ban last year on international flights worried terrorist would use laptops as a bomb hence were only allowed on carry on.

Ahh, I looked - it's just suggested, not prohibited but it seems like they will go thru your bag if you have it. It's only loose batteries that are not allowed on check-in.

I wouldn't put a laptop or anything of value in my checked bag. Between the possibility of it getting damaged, lost or stolen I just wouldn't take that chance.

I've had a Note 9 for about a few weeks now. I really don't want to have to return it, because it's by far the best phone I've ever owned (even strides ahead of my Note 8 last year, especially in terms of battery). I know Samsung has a bad track record when it comes to putting big batteries in Notes (Note 7 also tried to increase battery capacity), but than again, with their safety check implemented after the 7 I'd be surprised if they missed something this egregious in anything beyond isolated incidents. Should I be concerned at this point?

At this point no. Aware yes, concerned no.

One case still being investigated.

I don't notice a HUGE increase in battery. Yea, it's better but not a ton better compared to my Note 8. I do have always on display going bright though and high performance mode always on.

I don't think this is a big issue though. There is no reason to believe it will be due to all the quality control that goes into these batteries. I guess there is a chance there is defective batteries, but design flaw wise like the Note 7 I just don't see this with the Note 9.

I'm not remotely worried. One case doesn't mean that every single phone is going to combust. There isn't enough information in regards to what got her phone to heat up so bad to the point that it combusted. My Note 9 hasn't gotten severely hot to the point where I can't hold it anymore even when playing games back to back for a couple of hours. I also don't use my phone when it's plugged in to a charger. I also don't dunk my phone in water purposely.

Whatever the case, her allegations that Samsung knows that their phones are defective are a bit of a stretch. I've has no problems with my Note 8 or my now Note 9. The only time they would get warm was when I was transferring my information from one phone to the other. Otherwise it has been cool to slightly warm with my usage. Never got me concerned that my phone would explode.

When I transferred my Note 8 apps and info to my Note 9 I was suprised that the Note 9 didn't get very warm like my other phones.

Exactly. Thinking about it more, the claim that Samsung knew of and concealed some issue sounds unlikely, and makes me question the validity of the claim. Obviously, Samsung appreciates that another Note 7-type recall would ruin their reliability, and would certainly err on the side of caution. I'd bet Samsung is more careful with their batteries than other brands out there, with the extra scrutiny. I'm more worried about hysteria forcing a recall, now that "Note 9 Fire" is all over the news, with the Note 7 still fresh in everyone's memories.

:) At the end I ended up not going for the house. Too much had to be done to it, and they weren't budging so that was that. I first met her at an open out where she and a partner were showing the house. To be honest, she seemed quite straight forward and a good person so I'm not totally inclined on believing that she is trying to gouge Samsung or make a name for herself. But of course, that's from my point of view as a potential client. :)

Oh ok. Gotcha:)

Edit: if water helps reignite the lithum battery maybe it had something to do with the water cooled carbon cooling in the phone .. we see when they start the investigation
Not very likely. The Note8 and many other phones have heatpipes and they were mostly fine.

Also, just to note. While some might be concerned, this is so far only one case, and one that has very little information to process and think of like the lack of photos and such. It’s not enough to come to a conclusion with. It’s either an isolated incident or a systematic fault. So far, I’m betting on the former because given the number of phones out there and how long the phone went on sale before, if there was a systematic fault a la Note7, I would reckon we’d hear even more of it by now. Of course, we’ll have to see in the coming weeks but assuming they don’t drop like flies, it shouldn’t be a cause for major concern yet.

With all that said, there was actually what looked like a Galaxy S9 which caught fire in July over at Florida. I don’t think many here have heard much of it, however. I only just did.

Note that it’s only the first time I’ve seen that sort of thing happen with the S9, which has been out for half a year at this point.

Not sure this is true. What if she's a smoker, used a vap.pen, or just lying. Her phone got real hot so she put it in her pocket book,
to destroy everything in there. That's a good place to put it.
Stay tuned.
If true at least she's safe.

I've seen videos of laboratory demonstrations of exploding phones that did in fact generate a surprising amount of smoke.
I’ve seen some phones catch fire, like the Note7. They did get very smoky but if the elevator was properly ventilated, I don’t think smoke would get thick to that point. I could be very wrong though

Exactly. I'm not really worried that the phone explodes-- Samsung has done so much to prevent it. And one time-- it could've been fake, OR the phone could've been damaged in transport, a knock-off (I've heard that a knock-off Note 9 DID smoke), or some bad charger, bad repair, or just bad luck. Anything.

I'm worried about the reaction. As was mentioned, an S9 blew up too, but everyone's tolerance for normal occurrences is lower with the Note series, and I'm worried about a hasty rush to judgement leading to a recall or something.

Please note that I'm not implying that the plaintiff is lying or is at fault. I hope Samsung finishes the investigation soon so we know what's really going on.

Wow interesting article/video. First S9 fire ive read. And Samsung blamed the buyers for buying the phone from 3rd party reseller online.

Also, correction to post above saying one first reports/video of a Note 7 on fire was in a McDonald’s in South Korea... my bad... it was a Burger King in South Korea.

The person who owned it before likely caused damage to it somehow or had shoddy work done on it. In that case I don't blame Samsung for saying that. I would never buy a used cell phone for a number of reasons, same as a computer. For one thing what if someone had illegal content on it and the law comes?

There is a video somewhere I think from England of someone eating at a restaurant and their s7 went poof laying on the table.

Oh and another thing, is it possible certain apps and malware or virusus can cause the phones to run so hard causing the battery to fry or phone to become really hot? That wasn't the case with the Note 7 but something I've always wondered about.

It's all too easy to put our own spins and theories on this situation at the moment _ me included.

For now I've read and digested the article , noted it and will await for any updates from official sources.
