Not impressed AT ALL with the S8, total fail for these reasons !!!

It would certainly be a boring and stagnant stale sector if we all liked the same things.

It's good we all have our own wants and needs that helps to push innovation and boundaries.

I came from using iPhones since the iphone 4 launch up to the iPhone 6 Plus but became tired at apples way of sandboxing it's hardware and iOS software.

Don't agree with most of these, but here is my take....

1st Fail - Step down in battery life. Looks like you will have to move up a size to the S8+ to get some parity with the S7E (which btw is already not that great)
2nd Fail - FPS is just daft. I know it was a last minute change but it is just beyond silly
3rd Fail - Camera, not so much the quality of it as it looks fine but more the lack of dual lens

I'm a fan of the rest of it but those 3 points are enough for me to skip this one even if shallow me still kind of wants one!

The FPS was supposed to be embedded under the screen but that didn't happen because it wasn't ready for primetime. So they scrambled and put it the only place they could so late in the process. I doubt they wanted it there either.

Samsung will hear very loudly and quickly the mass frustration of this fingerprint scanner. I am absolutely convinced they will not repeat this I the Note 8. If the embedded scanner is not ready and developed, I'm positive Samsung will put a larger size fingerprint scanner lower down in the back of the phone in the middle. In the same way as LG and Pixel.

No way Samsung will repeat this on the Note 8, especially when they have to win back customers after the Note 7.

To me it seems to be a very good phone. I only wish it had better audio through the earphone jack; maybe with dedicated DAC and Amp...

From going and holding it yesterday, the FPS is on the wrong side for holding it left handed. You really have to contort your index finger over to reach it. It's on the same side as your thumb as you hold it.

exactly. LG got it right on the V10/20, with the FPS in the center lower down under the camera; makes it very easy to use no matter what. I always failed to understand what Samsung was thinking.

They were thinking, put it here beside the camera and give people a thousand other ways to unlock their devices, or delay release until July so that we can redesign internals to place it where it really should be.

My only big beef with this phone is that they put such a pathetic battery in both sizes considering how big they are. You can talk all you want about efficient battery improvements via software (TW), but that's not good enough.

We should be getting in both the regular and + versions, at least a 4000mAh battery.

Also not a fan of the curved edges and would wish they'd offer a flat version for those that like that option.

1st fail,,, I hate curved edge displays, that's thee reason I traded my S7 Edge for the regular S7.
2nd fail,,, fingerprint sensor location on the back right next to the camera lens and at the top portion of the phone.
3rd fail,,, no improvements to the camera or at least none mentioned.
4rth fail,,, odd phone shape (too tall).
5th fail,,, 21x9 screen ratio with black side bars when watching 16x9 content.
6th fail,,, no stereo speakers (correct ?)
7th fail,,, all glass phones do scare me for drops.
S 8th fail,,, the ability to protect the S8 with a case.

Ok,,, my personal opinions of course, but I was really interested in the S8 until after the all hype keynote.

I'm currently rocking an iPhone 7 Plus (I hate the bezels and the big size screen to footprint ratio, but still love the iPhone 7 Plus in spite of those drawbacks)

So now I'm just waiting for the September iPhone keynote or a suprise announcement of a new Note 8.

Cheers
Davyo

Some interesting points here. I can agree with numbers 2 and 4 . But I also agree with the others that the location was a mad rush to get it in there due to their original plan didn't come to fruition. However, I also think that there should have been a potential fallback in case it didn't work out. The overall height of the device may not be so bad for the S8. It sits in between the Pixel and the Note 5.

As far as the camera is concerned, I think we have reached a critical mass idea when it comes to cameras. A breakthrough needs to happen before we see a large improvement in hardware. The stereo speakers idea would be nice, I miss them from my M8, but it's not a deal breaker. Even if they mimic the HTC 10, that would most likely put a larger bezel on the top edge of the phone. They would then also be likely to put a larger one on the bottom to make the face balanced.

As for the battery concerns....I think it will depend on how well the SoC performs. Chips have been getting more and more energy efficient, so the physical size of the battery may not be that much of a concern.

I think all OEMs need to go back to the drawing board for the aesthetics of a device. Form follows function and I think they occasionally forget that. I would prefer an extra MM or 2 to get an extra 500 mAh of battery life.

Overall, I am kind of impressed with the S8. I may not get it; I am waiting to see and hold it before making that call.

The placement of that Bixby button is a negative for me.
If it's nit as useful as advertised, it'll just wasted space.
Perhaps a remap option should be included?

While true its still bad it makes it an automatic no sale if you like FPS and can't reach it. I hope everyone who orders one at least tries one first or approximates on their current phone where the location would be.

I agree with some of your points, but I don't think it's a fail. I just don't like it. I don't know how the phone design got past the engineers and the focus groups. The FPS location is in a terrible place.
Fps embeded in the screen was taking too long to perfect. Placing it in the back was a last minute decision. The screen place version will be out with the Note 8

It's a terrible excuse. They knew the embedded FPS wouldn't be ready. It's still a major design flaw.

The S8 is far more impressive than the iPhone 7. The iPhone bezels are HUGE. They refused to update the design to maximize profits. Ask yourself this: what improvements did the Iphone 7 have from the 6s? And iPhone 6s vs iPhone 6? I bet you the iPhone 7s will be exactly the same. No change in design after 3 years. There's nothing exciting about iPhones, iPhone fans are biased and secretly envy Samsung's innovative ideas. The new iPhone coming out is finally going to have Samsung's AMOLED screen and fans will praise Apple when Samsung have been using AMOLED for many, many years.

Crazy thing is iPhone is still faster and probably smoother than the S8 and it's 7 months old. Just saying. However, the GS8 is a pretty piece of machinery.

I think Samsung is not for you since I find it perfect for a curvy smartphone. But it's all about personal taste to something.

Considering what happened with the note 7 I don't blame them for not trying to squeeze as big of a battery as they could, at least for now

We won't know until we see a teardown how tightly things are packed, but saying that the S8 should have a battery that's 33% larger than that of the S7 when the volume of the phone is about 3% larger might be a big ask.

Now if you are saying that it should be thicker to accommodate the larger battery that's a different matter. But the fact is that the S8 isn't a big phone - by recent standards it's quite a small one, so there will be physical limits.

But I still have much more control over an android than I would with an iPhone. So yep an iPhone is faster but an android is so much more freedom to put things where I want, how big or small I want, more features to chose from. That to me is way more important.
