Note 3: KitKat update disabling use of external micro SD Card

You people are idiots, they didn't disable anything. They just added an API for storage access so that apps can't just place files on the cards manually.

Welcome to the forums.
I hope the rest of us can meet your high standards.

Really. Most us want complete control of the card. I have lots of pdf, spreadsheet and other types of food that formerly resided on the card. One application I use extensively does not play with Kitty Kat's superior protection scheme. Also, never ever had a program messing with the files on the card.

I travel a lot, so i chose an android tablet over say an iPad for the ability to download from torrents straight to my device. now I'm only able to download to the remaining 2 gigs I have in my internal memory. my file manager is also useless. basically, the reason I chose android over other devices is now no longer there. I could root it, but then again, I could also jailbreak an iPad to do what I want.

what's the point of even having SD memory now? the only time I can write to it is now with the help of a computer. ridiculous.

guess my next device will no longer be android.

The problem is he is right. Most of you complaining about the new scheme are using apps that don't support kit katt properly.

The fact he called people idiots speaks more to the frustration with people complaining about something they don't understand then anything else.

The problem is that he has poor communication skills. He will be banned with that attitude...it is against forum rules. No one wants someone like that around here...people have been tossed outta here for less, right or wrong.

And he's not exactly right either...not only that, but it's also an issue with the apps themselves, not the OS. Many developers just haven't bothered to address it, so you do want to blame Google for that?

And so you should! Everyone else does, so why should you be all alone in NOT blaming me? :D

Perhaps he will, but I can admit I am tired of this debate too. Especially when so many of them revolve around apps needing updates.

I have no sympathy for devs on this either. Kit Katt was out well before the N3 got it. I was running it a long time ago on my Nexus 10. If the apps functionality revolves around sd Card access this should of been taken care of months ago.

I'm not sure (I've s5 since 5days) but: using fe file explorer I've full access on external SD card, using instead quick pic (gallery viewer) I can't (i.e.) remove images from external SD card, so I guess (with rooted mobile) apps needs root permission to access with all permission to SD card. but the question is: how I try use quick pic app with root permissions?

thanks

EDIT: after installed an app, (with file manager) move it to /system/app directory, next when you start the app, its runs with root permission (not tested) and should be all permissions (write/remove) inside SD card

please tell me if this way is right.

You're exactly right about this being more of a problem with the apps than the OS. Eventually, apps will be updated and we will all move on this will all seem so silly. I look forward to that day, because right now it's just frustrating trying to stem the tide of ignorance and anger.

All these news articles titled "SDCards useless in Android 4.4" aren't helping, because half the people complaining about this don't have *any* idea what's actually going on.

There's a much easier way to regain full SDCard functionality, if you're already rooted, than moving apps to the /system/app directory. Here's a link to XDA detailing what to do. It's literally as simple as adding a line to a text file and rebooting the device.

Hi there, I too am experiencing this problem after updating my Note 3 to KitKat. I first became aware of it when I came to use my back up pro. And also when I tried to update a word document in quick office. It has not affected the ability for my camera to write to SD Card though. I think that is because so many mobiles use cards to save images it would be a no brainer not to. It seems the re restrictions are to 3rd party apps only.

There is an app that can fix this called SD fix. Unfortunately it is only for rooted devices and I'm not rooted.

Ok, what am I not understanding: Have KK on my new Note 3.
1) I take a test picture of my dogs and it saves it to my external card w/no problem. Check with Gallery and there it is.
2) Using ES File Explorer I go into the DCIM/Camera folder (on external card) and create a subfolder called "Pets" within Camera folder.
3) Move the pic from DCIM/Camera to new "Pets" folder
4) Go back to Gallery and "Camera" album is gone. No "Pets" album either.
5) Exit Gallery and go back to ES File Explorer. Move test pic out of "Pets" put it back in DCIM/Camera folder.
6) Go back to Gallery and it's gone like it never existed. It's still in the camera's folder tho when checked with ES.
7) Take another test photo and it saves it fine to the external card. But only 2nd photo shows up, even tho my 1st photo is in the folder as well.

So the simple act of moving a picture around with ES made it invisible to the Gallery app. I don't understand.
