Note 3: KitKat update disabling use of external micro SD Card

Well, I rebooted the phone and now the pics show up in Gallery like they should. My next problem is getting music to be recognized. The stock music player will only recognize music if it is placed on the internal card under the Samsung folder.

Actually from what I read in the XDA Developers forum, it is a problem with the OS (or at least Google programmer gods ideas of what the OS needs) and no, it is not going to be fixed. I bought a new Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1, only had 16 gig internal but hey, they advertise it's expandable up to an additional 64 gig w/ MicroSD card, right? So I bought a 32 Gig card and put it in there.

Wanted to set up Dropbox to synchronize documents between my desktop and the tablet (and vice versa), OOPS! Can't do that. If Dropbox writes the files to the SD card, your Office software can't update it, nor can you create new files in a Dropbox synchronization folder if it's on the SD card.

Wanted to copy 3 Gig of photos from my computer onto the card and an app on the tablet to clean them up and delete the ones I don't need. Sorry! Can't do that! Have to copy that 3 gig directly onto the primary storage!

Wife would like to get all of her music library converted and made available. Same problem. Can't share data on the SD card.

So yeah, for what I want to do, KitKat has basically made the MicroSD expansion card unusable. And yes, I understand that if I were to root the device, I could add the two lines to some configuration file and it would all work properly again, but why should I have to do that to get functionality that Samsung advertised to be available.

And don't even get me started on the wonderful new feature where if you uninstall an application, it magically deletes all your data (documents, music files, whatever).

Hey!!!! How you guys doing! Been reading through the thread and all I gotta say isssssss ROOT! You will be able to fix all your sd problems along with various other tweaks. Kit-Kat removed the ability to use your SD card. If you root your device you void warranty with manufacture not your cellphone company. Manufacture deals with software, and hardware deals with your carrier, like faulty sim card tray or SD card tray, or volume buttons yada, yada. When you root you can always get your phone back to pretty much bone stock except for knox counter being 0*1. That again only looked for by the manufacture not your carrier, I mean shoot... I bet 90%+ don't even know what know counter is! Any how you can restore phone back to bone stock with some kinda restoral tool, this being dependant on phone and Devs working on it. Theres two apps you can use once you are rooted among endless other root apps that pertain to SD fix, both apps can be found in play store-1.) APP-"NEXT APP SD FIX", this makes it so SD card is accessible again to main core apps and you can transfer them to SD card but just app it self not data of app this where this comes in handy, 2.) APP-"Folder Mount", this takes the game data or what ever data that android doesn't normally move and transfers it to sd card, freeing up space. Sorry for long post, thought I could make a suggestion after countless hours of research.

Re: Kitkat update disabling use of external micro SD Card

If you can move your personal data to external SD then you can take the SD out of the phone or tablet until you need it. Then, if your device is lost or stolen then you don't give away personal data. Google have prevented me from doing that and have SERIOUSLY compromised MY security. Why should anyone care if an app overwrites another app's data without permission? As soon as ANYONE noticed it a warning would go up for it and everyone would avoid it like the plague. Google appears to want everyone to use the Cloud, which is like storing all your money under someone else's mattress.

There is SOOOO much wrong with everything you said here my head is about to explode.

Lol...people have been saying this since KITKAT 4.4.2 came out. Nothing has changed.

So should I be upset with Microsoft because my 10 year old app won't work with win 8. I mean it was only written 10 years ago and works fine in XP.

All the anger over the SD card is miss directed. If the developer won't fix their appv don't get there apps any more. It isn't goggles responsibility to make developers accountable it is ours by not using apps if they don't work.

Holy crap. It's happening on my unlocked AT&T Note 3 (which I'm using with Metro). I've tried everything; only able to transfer by using PC...u know, by putting files on laptop then putting SD card in & transferring.... Ugh.....

*AM NOT HAPPY *

Unbelievable. Anyone else? And is there a 'fix' of any kind?

Being unlocked won't change how kit katt works.eBay are you trying to put on the phone that is a problem.

That isn't an accurate analogy. One more apt is being upset with M$ if they updated Win 8.1 so that apps written for Win 8 no longer work. There was very little info about how the SD card changes would affect Android. On top of that Google fixed a problem no one had. I haven't seen one complaint that apps downloaded from the PlayStore that were randoming deleting data on people's SD cards. It was a solution in search of a problem and it took away functionality that was always there.

If I download an app from a black market source and it ruins the data on my SD card that is my fault. As long as the data in the protected areas of the internal memory are intact I can just reformat my card and move on. Who thinks it was a good idea that when an app is uninstalled it should delete its own personal folder on the SD card? What if I don't want that data deleted? KitKat is HORRIBLE and I'm sorry for everyone who updated thinking it was going to make Android better. If you have KitKat and you are happy with it more power to you but I have yet to hear of any feature that KitKat brings that makes up for what was taken away.

I haven't had any problems with my Note 3 on Sprint.

First off. The assumption that a security hole hasn't been exploited because you haven't heard about it is a bad way to base the decision to fix it.

Second any person that does experience loss of data or theft isn't going care about why the bad app was there. They would just blame Google for leaving the data exposed.

I am not saying Kitt Kat is using the best method to handle it. But it is what it is. Every app I use has been updated to support kit katt. We can't let app
developers off the hook to properly update there apps. The SD Card change/issue has been know since not long after Kit Katt was released. There are GPE devices that have SD Cards.

As far as my analogy goes fine. Let's not say from XP to Win8. But I can tell you I had several apps that didn't work between XP and Vista. That is a exact comparison. The change from jelly bean to Kit Katt is similar to that. The difference is those large commercial companies had a new version out within weeks of Vista's launch if not prior to it. Developers in Android are not the same caliber as commercial windows apps. To many of them come and go or have crap for support after launch.

Not only was the Google way of fixing the SD card 'security' issue not the best way it was a horrible way. Not every app gets updated regularly and there are TONS of great apps that were broken by this security fix. Apps that people were perfectly happy with before the changes. It was an anti-consumer move. It did not make many peoples devices better at all. I'm glad you like KitKat I hope it serves you well. I am going to stick with Jelly Bean.

Not for long you won't, unless you root. KitKat will be forced on your device if you avoid it long enough...there's no way around it unless you root. And FWIW, this is about the only real issue on KitKat vs Jelly Bean.

I have a few apps that will not write to the SD card, but I can move the data from internal storage to the card in each case; no big deal - and I can wait for the update.

So many people chant "the sky is falling" with this update, but, it's really not a huge problem. My stock camera app still writes the pictures to the SD card.

It's an issue with the developers right now...not Google.

Google can only be responsible for what they put out. The can't make a developer create updates, but they have a responsibility to make sure Android protects us and our data. The best way to fix this is to not use app's from developers that don't update there app. A semi annual update is not to much to ask from and developer and Android's upgrade cycle isn't a mystery.

I don't see much change with Kitt Katt. And I would much rather have all the other security improvements that 4.4 has instead of putting my head in the sand and ignoring them.

This problem isn't new to Android. There were systems at my office that could only run on window 3.1and a 386 a few years ago. The vendor went away and no one supported it but it was a critical mop process. So we stuck it out till it was finally replaced. The only way to fix lack of support is to move on. Trust me if the dev starts to lose money, they will fix it.

Hi,
The only way to write, delete, update, rename and copy external SD files is to use the built-in files manager "My Files".

I just tested this with Root Explorer and it worked fine. Created a few folders and copied one of the files from plex.

The hell they will force the update on to me. It is my device and I paid for it in full. If I want full access to MY SD card that's MY business, Unless they are going to buy my devices for me they have no right to force anything on me. There is no way they can force all android users to upgrade to KitKat anyway because it isn't supported on all devices. If you guys want Google to 'protect' you that's your business. I am perfectly able to administer my own device. You can troll and tease and say that people who don't want to lose features on devices they paid for as claiming the 'sky is falling' but I have the right to refuse they direction they are going and I will do so.
