Note 4 on lollipop - How is it working?

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

So all of the bugs that people are experiencing on Lollipop can be eliminated by doing a factory reset after the update? This is indeed good news for me, since I was planning on waiting a month or two after the update was available to see what people were experiencing. But if it runs great after a factory reset, that's even better. I don't mind doing factory resets. In fact I usually do one every 3-4 months no matter what device I'm on just to keep things fresh. I have signing into my accounts, setting up my preferences, and setting up my home screens down to an art :).
Ugh I dread all that. I used to love tinkering with everything but recently I've lost my patience.

I think my old BlackBerry's annoying need for constant tinkering and leaks and ALL the stupid device drama killed it for me.

I'd try to avoid resets if I can.

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy s5 on Verizon, which was killed by the lollipop update. It's sluggish, has app crashes, and horrible battery life.

How does the note 4 fare on lollipop? I'm eligible for an upgrade in April and I'm looking at either the note 4 or nexus 6.

After experiencing the sluggishness of Samsung devices (s3 and s5) after about a year of use, I'm really considering jumping ship to the nexus line.
My wife and daughter have the Verizon S5 both phones are still running like champs after the update. I had to do a factory reset on my daughters S5 because hers stopped working on WiFi. Other then that there has been no issues with their phones.

Remind me how to clear cache....thanks! !

One easy way is to go to Settings~~>Storage~~> click on Cached Data and select 'OK', of course, to clear the cache.

I actually copied and saved this info to my Evernote that a gracious member posted a few days ago. I am really Sorry I didn't note who it was to give them credit. I really appreciated these detailed instructions!

To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:
1. Turn the device off.
2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time:
• Volume Up key
• Home key
• Power key.
3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power and Home key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key.
4. Continue holding the Volume Up key until the Android System Recovery menu displays and then release. This step may take several seconds.
5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight 'wipe cache partition.'
6. Press the Power key to select.
7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

You would be so foolish to compare note series with the S series. I owned s4, note 3 & now I am having note 4 (android 4.4.4). Also I have used s3 and note 2 for quite long time. So I can feel the difference between S & note series. Note series is faaaarr better than S in every department. No lag, no bug and great battery life in note. I am just stunned by the note 4. Unbelievably fast it is!!!
Though I haven't got lollipop yet but I don't think you will suffer buying a note 4 like you did in case of s3 & s5. S series always gives you headache.
I haven't used nexus 6 so can't comment on that. But that's not a bad phone either. But note 4 is definitely better than nexus 6 if you have no problem with late updates. In nexus you won't get the advantages of touchwiz. Yes note 4 UI is much better.
Don't know about android auto.

I agree the note 4 is by far the best phone . but I do get some lag though. Do you have a lot of apps?

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

I live in sweden and the update hasn't come ETA yet, however you can go to sammobile and get the update that way. I have only had the note 4 with lollipop two days and so far I'm loving it, l like the looks and the handling, but we'll see further on, some hiccups I will expect, time will tell...

Are you using the TouchWiz launcher? That can cause lag. If so recommend replacing it with Nova or Apex. Also, with Dev options enabled, change animations scales from from 1x to .5x for Windows animation, Transition animation, and Animator.

Those should make a marked reduction on any lag you're seeing.

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

Hi everyone. A complete droid-noob signing in. ;)

I made the move from the walled garden of apples a couple of weeks ago. The Note 4 is my first droid.. And what a droid! So far I'm loving the phone, the freedom, the customisation, the uploads, the downloads, the sd, the camera and even the google ecosystem. Honeymoon for sure... but so far.. so good!

Being naturally a bleeding edge kind of guy, and having the advantage of having a brand new phone with nothing to lose, I decided to upgrade to lollipop straight away. I figured there was nothing on the phone anyway, so a factory reset was no biggie. So I got the unlock code from o2 in the UK, gave it a reset and a cache wipe and flashed my Note with the German Sammobile 5.01 Rom.

Has only been a week, but so far its been mostly good. Apps all work fine (not too many crashes I can remember) Havent seen any lag at all using either TouchWiz or Nova. Overall - the thing runs like a beast!

I have encountered one hiccup however: Spontaneous battery discharging. Everything seemed fine up until now... averaging a couple of days standby and 4-5 hrs OST. But then last night it inexplicably lost 25% battery overnight. Thats with Mobile Data and Location off, and a generally notification-pruned system. Have taken advice from these forums and have disabled bloat and unnecessary notifications. Have also installed GSAM to keep an eye on it. Will give it another week or so to see If I can narrow it down.

Not sure wether this is specifically lollipop related or not however? May just be a rogue app. Will update as I go along.

Thanks for all the great advice and tips that I have already benefitted from despite this being my first post :D

Yes I am using touchwiz. I feel it's better than any other third party launcher. I said I had NOT experience any lag till now.

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

Mines on 5.0.1 here in korea and its the Exynos version and post lollipop the battery runs down randomly and gets hot and sometimes it hangs on random apps. I did a factory reset and same issues linger. Benchmarks have went down slightly too.. Hoping these bugs get worked out asap. Love the new look and feel but really hating these bugs. Its bringing down the performance of the phone a lot. And the thermal throttling is ludicrous. The things barely warm and the performance gets cut in half.

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

Very similar experience here in korea with Exynos model. Add more hanging on random system apps occasional contacts stopped working and reduced battery performance. Buggy to say the least. But not bad for a whole new system. Hoping a update or two come soon to fine tune it

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

My Nexus 7s have Lollipop, and I'm not that impressed. It's bright and ugly, but it seems to run okay after factory resets on both devices (the 2012 N7 was HORRIBLY SLOW on 4.x and 5.0, but going to 5.0.2 fixed it and it runs beautifully now).

But I think when 5.x makes its way to the Note 4, I'm going to put it off until it forces me to do the update. My Note 4 runs awesome. The battery life is great. Performance is beautiful. I really don't want Lollipop.

Also, the update wouldn't push to my device. I connected to keys on PC when I saw the update available through sammobile and then it detected the update was available and did it through there. oTA never came... :-S

Re: Note 4 on lollipop

Lets just say aside from the visual upgrades and minor feature upgrades...lollipop was a minor step back in overall performance of the phone. Kitkat worked pretty well

Thank you!

That clears the application cache, by the way, but not the system cache. If it helps your problem, fair enough.

If it doesn't:

1. Turn off phone. Set it on a flat surface because this is going to be easier that way.
2. Press and hold HOME / POWER / VOLUME UP.
3. Once your phone vibrates, release HOME and POWER but continue pressing VOLUME UP until a menu appears.
4. Use VOLUME DOWN to scroll to "clear cache partition" and POWER to select that option.
5. Cache clear will take a few seconds. Then press POWER to select "RESTART" which should be the default option on that menu.

Because my hand-eye coordination stinks, I've discovered if you let go of all three buttons then press and hold VOLUME UP for step 3, it seems to work just as well. :)
