Note 8 fell face down. Screen shattered.

The truly sad part is, as these phones get more expensive, that sort of tactic might actually become attractive to the "morally flexible".

That happened to my dad actually back in 2015 when he bought a new S5. We were walking into a restaurant and an old parking sign that was removed had the bottom of the sign pole still sticking out. He didn't see it and nearly tripped and it caused his s5 to fly about 5 feet in the air and far screen first. He had a Best Buy Insignia holster case and there was no damage to the phone. If it were something like the Note 8 it probably would have cracked.

Fr0gburp3r, what kind of case is pictured in your photo? I just purchased the Note 8, but haven't ordered a case yet. thx

He answered that probably a couple times in the thread, just read through, you'll find it 😉

Working phone still usable with broken (and black) screen

I dropped my Note 8 onto a concrete floor. It landed on the lower right corner and after a day or 2 the screen frazzed. No case (because I liked to carry it in my shirt pocket) -- it just slipped out of my hand (the case looks like it was designed to do that). Oddly, I could tell the phone was still working in all respects, but I couldn't see what the screen was trying to tell me.

I had Asurion insurance, so for a $199 deductible, I had a replacement phone in 2 days. But I had been a little lax in backup, so although the SD card was transferred OK, I had no idea what phone storage was backed up and what was not -- only Contacts appeared on the new phone. I had a lock screen configured, so couldn't even plug the phone into a PC to try to back up local storage. (And, it turns out, you can't back up phone storage to a PC.) Asurion's Tech Coach gave me lots of advice, but it all required actually using the phone to back things up or to use Smart Switch -- none of which I knew anything about.

I was ultimately saved by another feature I didn't know anything about. The Note 8 (and probably other contemporary devices) have a low-level process running which duplicates the screen content on a TV set connected via a USB-C to HTMI adapter. Samsung graciously provides the adapter for only $50, which can be bought much cheaper at the on-line store where everybody buys stuff; it was in my mailbox 2 days later.

I plugged my Samsung phone into the Samsung adapter, and then via the HDMI cable temporarily taken from my Samsung DVD player, to my Samsung TV set, and Viola! there was my (black) screen (enlarged to ~20" high). I pushed the power button, and my lock screen showed up. It took a while to learn how to touch the phone screen while being guided by what I saw on the TV, but the bottom line is -- I was able to use Smart Switch to transfer all my stuff to the new phone.

After the successful transfer, I reset the old phone to factory specs for security reasons, and after the power-off reset, the screen lit up just fine with the Verizon power-on screens, but then went dark when the reboot was finished. Go figure. But, at that point I just stuffed it into the mailer and sent it off to Asurion.

I am the OP that smashed his screen. While the case I had at the time was solid Ringke case, I just got a new Spigen one today and it is PERFECT.

got the matt blue and it is great looking and tons of protection. Not tons of bulk, just perfect and well balanced. Give it a try.

So.. My Note 8 fell with that case on (golden color) & just cracked today after almost an year of use yet it is painful as this is the first time ever that I've broken a screen on my smartphone

I did the same thing in June. Never broken a screen before. I think mine was just how it hit the floor. I could have used that $175 for a down payment on a Note9.

A wallet case would have protected it. It's all I use with my phones. It might be inconvenient for some but I like the protection.

I've got a wallet case and mine face planted on Thursday while I was on vacation. It didn't ruin the vacation but it really sucks. I'm calling Samsung tomorrow.

Glad you got your phone fixed mate and I have the same Spigen Tough Armor case which I fitted the day after getting the phone. The next day, the Note 8 flew out of my hand when getting out of the car, bounced a couple of times in the car park and survived without a scratch.
For £20, a very worthwhile investment!

Yep, happend this morning. Phone still works but now my screen is all taped up to prevent fingers from getting glass cuts.

I have no insurance and 1st time to ever break a phone. My luck.

I called samsung and they can replace the screen for $293 if I send it in. Obviously this is cheaper than having to buy another one but I want to hear people's experience on this forum with Samsung repairs. Is this a good option and would the phone be back as it was new. Does samsung do quality screen replacements? Would appreciate sharing your experience with me. Thanks!

hi it happenned to me two days ago i asked around and i realized that local shops dont have access to the original samsung lcd and screens and.... they can only replace it with a third party lcd so theyre ranked as: copy high copy third party and finally original
this happened to me with my note 3 too a few years ago i replaced it twice or maybe three times with the third party lcds they are the most fragile lcds possible the smallest drop will break them
anyway now with my note 8 i wont trust the 3rd party screens i want to know what happened th your phone after u repaired it did it break again?
can i trust samsung repairs?

and ive heard sth else too that phones have some sort of vacume which will be lost if they are repaired and that will make them extera fragile if anyone knows anything that can help me i wud appreciate it thanks
