Note 8 to iPhone X?

I didn't know about this. I did my own mini, completely non-scientific test since I have a Note 8 and an iPhone X. I watched an episode of Stranger Things in HDR on both, side-by-side last night and the iPhone X blew me away. It was incredible. I was surprised that it did better than the Note to be honest. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that Apple implemented Dolby Vision HDR and Samsung uses HDR 10. It is my understanding that the two standards are encoded differently. But as it stands now, even though the Note 8 screen is bigger, I'm finding that I like the iPhone X display better overall.

I would imagine being released 2 months after the Note might help with that. Still not worth the extra $.

Check displaymate. They have the test report up na for the iPhome X. Brightest screen, brighter overall than the Note 8. The Note 8 can get brighter on small areas of the screen, but not the whole screen. The iPhone X has the best display that they’ve ever tested, and yes, they have tested the Note 8 already.

No fanboy of anything just reporting results.
Displaymate gave them both an A+, and if you look at the data they each won some, lost some. "Best" was primarily for Apple's color accuracy tech. Personally I'm not sure the value of color accuracy on a phone. Accuracy is useful for printing to have everything calibrated. Accurate doesn't equal pleasing. There are a lot of folks on the Apple forums unhappy with the screen color on the X.

Back to the thread question. I wanted to see the Apple keynote before buying a Note 8. I don't care for the X... too small, only facial, and oh that notch. I was also just getting bored with iOS and spending that much for basically the same experience... Not for me. I absolutely love the Note 8.

I love my note 8 and wouldn't trade for the X, but.... I have to say, this is going to be a big product for Apple. I don't think the level of frustration among IPhone users was anywhere near as bad as it was in the IPhone 5 years, yet Apple has upped the game on their product big time. At the very least, it's definitely going to influence the direction of Samsung products.

How so? It's basically an S8 with better facial recognition and a notch. There are way more things on the X that were influenced by Samsung. This is the way competition works. Companies influence each other.

Like I said....a big product for Apple. For those already in the ecosystem, and that's a significant chunk of US smartphone users, it's a revolutionary product that will retain a lot of loyalty and confirm (in their minds) that Apple is the leader. And last I checked, Samsung is working on 3D face id a la Apple. Competition.

Not saying this as an Apple fanboy. With the purchase of my Note 8, which I bought after the IPhone X announcement, I've now owned more Samsungs than iPhones.

The X has been out for ~week and is now in what I call, public field test shakedown cruise mode, to find any loose rivets and to work out the bugs. Needs 6 months maybe on software and 2nd production if needed. Green lines, tint, cold air. This OLED may be from Samsung but it is 1.0 for Apple.

The S9 and Note 9 will likely copy the 3D depth sensing facial recognition and there's a good chance the S9 at least will have a notch or cutout for the FPS to go back on the front. Rumour has it that it will look a lot like the camera cut out on the Essential PH-1 but at the bottom.
Apple and Samsung will forever take each others ideas or successful features for their own products. Just look at Samsung implementing the same dual camera set up as the iPhone 7 Plus and also introducing the Galaxy s8 Plus to compete with iPhone's Plus models.

What? Apple was last to the party with a US size device.

I truly hope that Samsung doesn't copy the notch.

Can't really see them doing that, as the notch isn't a feature or a function at all. I do hope they will not follow to replace the home button completely by using gestures.

I'm just getting used to the simulated home button on the Note 8 after coming from an S7 Active that still had REAL buttons. I didn't think I'd like it but it's fine. I can't see Samsung doing away COMPLETELY because of the suite of buttons you typically have on the bottom of a Samsung screen. With Apple, it's JUST the home button down there.

Note 8 is able to do 1,240 nits in Low Average Picture Level mode (in bright sunlight), while X can only do 809 nits in the same mode. On the other hand, X can do 634 nits on full brightness vs 560 nits for Note 8. Sorry, but I'll take the Note 8 here, as 560 nits is more than enough, and in sunlight, it can get much brighter.

The main reason why X was called the best display is because of the screen calibration. As much as I tell myself I should like that, I just enjoy the Samsung colors better.

Either way, both are fantastic displays.

The 1240 is for only a “small area of the screen” , not the whole screen, so considering the “screen” the iPhone X is brighter. I do agree that both of ‘em get plenty bright enough though. No worries.

Absolutely not. No iPhone or any other manufacturers aside from Samsung themselves can ever convince me to switch over. The Note8 is far superior and better in comparison to ANY new iPhone, especially the X. There is nothing offered on the X that could possibly even make me curious because all iPhones are uniform and boring and they don't fit my needs. I'm always gonna be a Samsung girl. Apple, to me, are only good for their laptops and iPads, but they are lacking in the iPhones.
I'll definitely agree I'm also rocking a note 8 midnight black I've also been using Android ever since ANDRIOD came on the scene and being an early adopter of ANDRIOD I can say without a doubt Samsung is KING

The manufacturers always leapfrog each other in terms of specs, with the exception of new tech being introduced. I bet that the upcoming Galaxy flagships one up the iPhone X in a variety of ways. Then again, the iPhone has that who facial recognition thing down now. It's impossible to say that the iPhone X or the Note 8 is better because it depends upon what the person is looking for and used to.

I made the switch today. I'm a dedicated Apple user. Believe me when I say that, I tried going back to android several times in the past but ended up switching back to Apple within days. BUT the Note 8 caught my eye and I've ordered it. So I'm going from the iPhone 7 Plus to the Note 8. I have a feeling I won't be making my usual switch back. :p

That's with me... happened to S3, Note 5 (wanted the Apple watch, so I went back) & then the Note 7 (went back because of the debacle). But Now I have the Note 8... the iPhone 8, X nor iOS 11 impress me... I'm happy with the Note 8 for now haha.

All the best.

You really need to love the Note8 for what it is, that is my warning. It is a large device, that can be menacing to own for some, and if you do not fill utilise it, you may find it rather a waste.

You either love or hate it. It's a niche device.

I personally love it to bits, its everything I wanted in a smartphone/convergence device.

That is actually really well put, especially about utilising it's potential, even us Note addicts do find this one a PROPER step up from previous devices

Indeed.

It all made sense to me when I went from a Note 4 to a S7 Edge (because we all know what happened with Note7), and I realised at that point how much I actually utilised the SPen and took it for granted in the Note 4.

Only us Note addicts truly understand and appreciate this.

Nothing in this world would have me go from my N8 to an ipx. It honestly is a step backwards in every for me, imo. The N8 does everything I need and more with ease and pleasure. Hands down best smart phone of the year. Samsung has hit a grand salami with this one.
