Note phones have a 3 year lifespan, concerned with Note 8

Says and knows anyone who has a properly working device after 3 years. My Note 2 would have been working still fine after 5 years if it wasn't accidentally water damaged 2mos ago. The S3 that my brother bought alongside it is still working and my mom is using that. The first tablet we had at home was a Samsung P6500 Tab Plus. My mom is still using it to play games like Sim City and Candy Crush. I check it up every now and then and it's far from crippled.

Exactly. We still have Nexus 7's, a SHIELD tablet, OG Moto X's, etc. that my daughters still use daily. There isn't a hard expiration date, it's all about taking care of it.

just to be the devil's advocate, after MS said they would pass an update to certain hardware to force users into Win10, I received an update on my server that was working fine beforehand and crippled after the update. it's still waiting for me to see if I can roll it back and resurrect it. it's a big pain being without it but can't deal right now.

My Note Edge still runs fine if a tad slower with updates. Like was already said, if they were crippling older devices and this was found out. There would likely be riots and lawsuits.

Now if this was happening and could be proved beyond reasonable doubt.....

Cheers,
BR

Okay but it works and will solve your issue.

If that's not good enough for you simply don't buy the phone. I guess I am failing to see the true question? It seemed you were trying to find a solution. While it may not be the best one out there it's a solid one that works and will solve the issue for you to buy. If that doesn't work for then root is an option.

If that doesn't work then you should probably look for another phone. Keep in mind that carrier branded phones from Moto, LG, Samsung, etc. can and have had updates forced on them when people were sleeping overnight or sometimes even mid day.

It's called raising awareness dude. I know some like you refuse to hear what you don't want to hear.

I'm still on my Note 4 and it works pretty well considering it's three years old, although it could probably use a new battery. I've done every update and never had to factory reset

There is a lawsuit going on. Check the link.

That definitely isn't the case. I was simply responding to you saying you were buying the phone so I was telling you what to do to fix said issue. After I told you how to fix it you changed your statement to say it was for the general public.

Sorry you swapped what you said -- I can only go on what you say.

I turned off windows update permanently and my computer has been running like it was brand new, fresh out the box. Although you think it's turned off, it still updates without your permission. Press ctr + R and type in: "services.msc". Scroll down till you see Windows Update and disable it. You will have to enable it sometimes when you install drivers. In Windows 10, it works too, they actually hid the option to disable automatic updates.

Anyone is going to be able to pull a few devices from memory that lasted longer than others. There's exceptions to everything. But as fast as tech is moving, it simply leaves hardware outdated. I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 (the original) that I still use almost daily and love it. But every other one of my phones had a timeframe where they simply started to fail. It happens with or without an update designed to kill it.

Updates can kill/slow down any phone. Ask anyone who still owns an iPhone 5.

Phones are not guaranteed to last more than 3/4 years. Just like most electronics, they age, become bogged down with apps, and become vulnerable to bricking by heavy updates they weren't built to handle. Newer devices are built with far more efficiency than the bricks of the past.

Not to sound mean, but upgrade your damn phone. Their are a lot of great deals right now.

We own our devices and we have choices. Not forced to do something. If I buy a phone, I should keep it as long as I want.

No one HAS to buy a $1,000 phone. It's a choice.

Many sell phones or sell free gifts or trade to get it cheaper anyway. Some will wait for holiday sales.

What other options are there? Buy a Note 5? Buy a Note 7FE? S7 Edge? Don't like those phones. Can't continue to use Note 4 anymore.

Sorry, but people have mentioned so many solutions to your frustrations, and you shoot them all down. To me it doesn't sound like you're looking for a solution, but just to speculate and assume that there is a conspiracy. I don't see why this thread even needs to continue considering the direction it's headed, but i'm no Mod.

The problem with that is when you're basing it on speculation. I also have a Note 4 and I can assure you that it was dying long before any update in July. Phones are simply not guaranteed to last any specific time-frame, which is why you can buy insurance for them. I'm not defending the company, but I think it's pretty rash to blame them for "crippling" a 3 year old device to get people to buy a new product. Technology advances so fast that it's more likely that the update was designed for newer tech, and the Note 4 just struggled with it.
My Note 3 still works great but it is disconnected from VZW so I never received updates that slowed it down or ate the batteries of other users.

I had a launch day note 2 that was used as a daily driver up until it finally died a few weeks ago lol. Probably the best argument in favor of removable batteries was being able to gift your old phones when you were done with them.

It's more about trying to figure out if there is a productive way for users to mitigate whatever the issue actually is, as well as ensuring that there is an understanding that the premise is based on misinformation.
