Note phones have a 3 year lifespan, concerned with Note 8

We own our devices and we have choices. Not forced to do something. If I buy a phone, I should keep it as long as I want.

And that's exactly what I said. You have two choices. Upgrade your phone, or keep your old phone as long as you like, and possibly deal with issues with old, out of date software. People make those decisions every day. Totally your choice.

You still haven't convinced me what an update to an old Note has to do with the Note 8.

If I am not mistaken you can use Package Disabler Pro to disable the thing that does that. Therefore no forcing.

True Almeuit - I've done it! I think it was "Samsung Push Service" if I'm not mistaken... it was a while ago?

Well, in Europe it's a little bit different, but still: I think politics should do something about companies making their devices obsolete within this very short time period, be it because of not providing updates, be it because of providing non-functional updates or hardware that boycotts longevity of a device.

Maybe just one type of phone. I don't think they should be required to update old tech with new software.

But have other phones that are new. Others are fine with new phones and updates.

My VZN Note 4 works great (other than fading battery). Received every update as well.

The reason all these notes are working fine is because the premise of the whole thing is a lie. Samsung is definitively not sabotaging their own devices to fail, early or otherwise.

Put me in the not having this phone for 3 years camp. Im getting this one cheap, and not looking forward to paying full price for the next one. Upgrading to the Note 10 will allow me some resell value.

You are right, they want them to work forever that you don't feel the need to buy a Samsung phone ever again.
Don't be naive! If it's possible, they do it. Not to obviously of course.

If they did do that and their competitors didn't then they would have no customers. So either this is a giant conspiracy where everyone is in on it yet no one knows about it or it's just not happening. Simplest explanation is that it's not happening because the idea of a conspiracy that involves millions of people yet none of them have ever mentioned it to another living person is ridiculous.

So, you want people to shut up. So how many dead Notes does it take to make you think there's something wrong?
If it was most, or if the entire theory wasn't based on misinformation, or if it wasn't based on hyperbolic conjecture... People would be more willing to entertain the argument. As it is, the whole idea is worth less than the data cost we've spent transmitting about it.

Have you tried find my phone on your Samsung account? You can turn it on, sound an alarm, and track it via GPS. Log in on Samsung's website. Kinda creepy.

Google can do that too. Any Android device has that functionality.

I don't really care if they don't shut up. I just roll my eyes. There's no need for them to intentionally cripple your phone to get you to buy a new one. These things are used and abused a lot. Expected lifetime for any such device is about 2-3 years. Plus the memory tech we have right now available for phones is of limited lifespan. The NANDflash memories on phones have limited read and writes, and unlike older devices where we hardly do anything apart from take pictures, these are little computers and data gets written and rewritten quickly. This goes the same way for all computer hard drives in laptops, desktops, even NASA supercomputers. Expected lifespan is 5 years of continuous use for most commercial laptop SSDs. Then we have components like the CPU which heat up, batteries. The insides of your phone get really hot, and in the span of 3 years the cooling pastes can just expire. Laptops need cleaning and replacement of the thermal paste after 2 or 3 years. Same as with phones. All this heat will cause internal deterioration. How much you abuse it will dictate how fast your phone breaks down. Basically, your phone just wears down after use, and there's nothing any manufacturer is doing to even speed up the process. They don't need to. If you abuse it too much they'll expect to see you in a year's time, if not too much maybe two or three. And even then, the advances technology is making will make your device feel slow, even if it didn't really become slower. Spec for spec in capability, for example, the Snapdragon 810 from 2015 (placed in phones like the HTCM9 and LG G4) is comparable to a current Snapdragon 625, and phones that have that are mid range are quite slower than current flagships.

Basically. Your phone is probably slow because it's old and it's parts are wearing down, plus current phones are just that much faster and efficient. So in comparison your phone feels slow.

There's nothing wrong. How many before I believe that there's something wrong? When there's greater than 10% of all Notes shipped failing. That's a few million units. As it is the number of complaints I can see on Googling don't even reach a significant fraction to even assume there's a problem at the manufacturer level.

There is a lawsuit going on. Check the link.
Lots of stupid lawsuits go on in the USA. I was on a jury for one of these stupid lawsuits. Most of these are filed by lawyers hoping the corporation will pay them to go away.

I run a business unit in a large enterprise software company. We get some stupid lawsuits filed that have zero chance of succeeding. We limit them by refusing to settle any case out of court. To date we have never lost a case. Most get dropped as soon as the opposing lawyers realize we won't pay them to go away.

Another Note4 here doing well. Original battery to boot. Looking forward to my Note8 though.
