Notifications not waking up lock screen?

Have a new Samsung S9, and when I get a notification like for a text message, or for two-factor authentication confirmation from an app, etc., the lock screen doesn't wake up. So I hear the notification sound, and when I open the phone the notification is waiting on the lock screen.

Been through settings, and I must have missed something...are there some particular settings that affect this? The apps themselves are set to allow notification on the lock screen, and that part works. I've gone to "Lock Screen and Security" in settings, and selected the apps that I want notifications from to show on the lock screen, and they do show on the lock screen.

But I haven't seen a setting for "wake up the lock screen for notifications", I suspect that's somewhere that I haven't found yet? Or something related to that that I'm not seeing?

Thanks for your help!

I did find a simple app that I used to use in my library, called "Screen Notifications". It works, but I'd much rather have a native way of doing this, without having to use an app. There must be one, this seems like an obvious thing to want to do, at least to me *smile*.

That's because notifications aren't meant to wake the screen up in Samsung's implementation (and for people like me, that's awesome). You have an LED for that. Ad AOD.

That being said, it will depend on the app if its notifications can wake the screen up. For instance, Samsung's messaging app and others like Textra will offer the option to do in the settings. Other than that, only phone calls and Emergency alerts will do so by default.

The notification light is redundant relative to the notification sound, and doesn't allow me to read the second-factor auth code in a text message. For that, I need to go to the text message. Seems like a lot of work to get a six digit code *smile*. Anyways, I have a work-around for the moment, if that's the way that Samsung wants to be. I also have a couple of apps that I want to wake the lock screen, LastPass authenticator, and two-factor notifications from gmail via the Google app. Makes it easier to get to the "Allow" and "Deny" choices quickly, since the allow choice is in the notification.

I'd be happy if waking up the lock screen were the default, but could be turned off if desired by those that don't want it. Or vice-versa. As it is, I have to chase down an app that'll do it, and have that overhead on my phone.

So it goes.

Thanks for the information, even though it wasn't what I hoped to hear *smile*.

I second this app. I use this on all my phones that don't have screen wake for notifications as a system setting. It

With the Samsung messaging is that a s9 think because o have a note 8 and I don't see that in the settings for it to not wake up the screen when I get a text . But when I use Google messenger it does not wake it.

Not sure if the setting is there or not as I stopped using stock messaging apps PRECISELY because they wake up the screen for texts, so I switched to Textra and never looked back.

Like I said, it's app dependent now. If Google's doesn't have the option either, then you can try a different app that does.

I too was wondering about this. So from what I am understanding, Samsung does not have this built in and it's dependent on the app if it can Wake the lock screen? I think this is something Samsung needs to implement. Notifications from news and my weather app appearing on the lock screen is helpful and useful, rather than having to unlock the phone, swipe down, read, and swipe away. It all can be done thru the lock screen.

I will try that third party app, but seems silly to have to get an app for that.

Is there a link to the "Screen Notifications" app? Can't find it anywhere. Unless it's gone or renamed?

I went back to trying glimpse notification again and emailed the developer, it seems to be working now with do not disturb mode and the exceptions.

In glimpse notification I had to enable quiet times and check suppose system quiet times.
In the settings for do not disturb I had to uncheck event/task alerts and reminders from the custom exceptions.

This made it work perfectly!
- Screen wakes up on notifications
- Screen does not wake up on notifications in do not disturb mode
- Screen wakes up on notifications with exceptions in do not disturb mode

I had the same issue with my s9 plus..
Go to settings - notifications-advanced on the top right.. - then again on the top right click on show system apps.
Now the next part is scroll down to the specific app you're not getting notifications from and click on it for me it was phone calls so I clicked on all 3 apps and made sure all where changed to show notifications on lock screen and pop on screen where on . ... basically from here you can set your notifications however your like .... I hope this helps. I called Verizon and Samsung both couldn't figure out what was wrong I did numerous resets and I finally just went around in my phone till I figured it out . .

Okay, I'd already set "pop up on screen" earlier for the apps where it was there under "Notifications" -> "Advanced". However, that still doesn't cause the lockscreen to turn on for my phone. Glad that it does on yours *smile*. Note that the issue for me isn't getting the notifications on the lockscreen, it's having the lockscreen light up (turn on) when the notifications arrive.

I did find another app, "Glimpse Notifications", that seems to be working for all notifications (not just text messages). Hoping that it continues to work...had to remove "Screen Notifications" because the phone/app got into a weird mode of cycling the lock screen on and off indefinitely, that had to go. Hoping that "Glimpse Notifications" doesn't get into that mode as well.

I got to say that I'm not happy overall with all the settings that Samsung has. Samsung has added a huge number of settings on top of the Android ones that I see with a Google Pixel phone. The S9 has a really nice screen, fast phone, but you can spend days looking for settings to disable some little annoyance that Samsung has worked hard to implement (including using the search function in settings), and that's really not how I want to spend my time.

Don't think that there are any more Samsung phones in my future, Google and Apple phones are much more manageable.

By the way, it isn't just text messages, it's other notifications as well. Like two-factor authentication "push" messages that you can get from LastPass, gmail, etc. I get tired of picking my phone and having to turn on the display all the time. And I will not use AOD, I'd rather be able to use my phone for longer between charges than to have the screen on all the time. All I'm asking is that Samsung give the option to wake up the lock screen on notifications. Purists don't have to use that, but there's so many options in Samsung's "Settings", what's one more setting that's actually useful to a lot of people?

Like I said, Samsung is apparently not for me.

Was having this same issue. Had never even heard of this app. Thanks for this. Definitely solved my issue.
