Notifications

Two questions:
I've a rooted S4 and would like to change the SMS notification to a certain MP3 but if I use ES File Explorer to point the notification to the mp3 I'd like to use on the sd card it does not work. ES File Explorer via the Message Alert change menu from the contact manager will not let me into the phone storage.
The custom ring tones work fine, just not the custom message notifications.

Ok, here's a some more. Would it be because the text message(s) that I receive from the contact is via e-mail?
