I was using Nova with my ZF3 and I experienced the same lag as you
@trucksmoveamerica#AC when opening and closing. I figured it was because I had over 500 apps, but maybe not. It's just not optimized for folding phones. I tried the tasker thing with using two different launchers and frankly I couldn't deal with the lag opening and closing with Tasker and two launchers. I just started to use OneUI and have put Nova on the backburner for now.
I will say something about Nova's developer... I actually would be sympathetic to his reasoning if he was actually making things better for Nova for single screen phones, but he keeps tweaking the launcher in areas that were perfectly fine before that no one asked to be tweaked. It's been 4-5 months now since I asked him why the option for continuous scrolling in a folder was removed in lieu of page scrolling and back then he said he was "testing" it in beta and he might revert back. He hasn't done anything about it, and didn't even put the option back to scroll by page or continuously. Not only that, if you scrolled through a few pages in a folder quickly, the icons all turn gray until you scroll back in the other direction. This is a bug and a reported bug that is easily reproduced. He went and launched Nova 7 out of beta with the bug still in there today.
So, yeah - I get it - he's one guy. (Is he? I thought Clint was another.) and he thinks foldables are gimmicks that don't have a future. But the questions he posed in that response above don't exactly seem to be showstoppers. Nova 7 now can work fine on the cover and on the main. I am not sure what he means by icons, and widget sizing. It already works now. It just doesn't have two instances - one for the cover and the other for the main.
Anyway, to be honest, I don't need a separate cover and main screen - I just want that lag between opening and closing the phone to go away. It's pretty obvious that every time you open or close the phone, Nova is being relaunched. Can we get a fix to stop that from happening? That'll make me happy enough.
I'm not saying it's not a lot of work, etc.. and I know people are going to be all defensive for the developer. That's fine - I am not a developer so I will never know what they are going through. However, anyone on their Discord server can sort of tell what is being worked on.
Nova Launcher Prime has over 5 million installs. That's over 5 million paid installations. I guess I'll go back to Nova with the S22U.
