Now Playing

Do you have an XL or the standard Pixel 2?

If you have an XL then I don't think you have to worry about that at all. The battery is a beast, and Oreo has improved battery life over Nougat.

Unless you're a serious power user with 5 hours of screen on time or more, the battery draw of Now Playing will simply be a non issue.

It's probably the same way with the smaller Pixel 2, I just can't comment since I have an XL.

Thanks, I have the regular smaller Pixel 2. I'm going to leave it on because Im not a power user.
Its another feature I really like.. hope you are enjoying the XL
Cheers

Oh, trust me, I only have the smaller one, and the battery is freakin' insane. It never drops even when I try to make it! o_o
Not sure if it's just because it's a new battery or what.

Just got my 2xl in last night and I enabled this feature...not working for me! And I'm in the US, so I'm confused.

Ok, apparently the songs I was playing were not recognized...even OutKast was not recognized! But LMFAO was...geez

So, I was at the gym this morning before work and, as usual after my workout, I put my Pixel 2 XL into a pocket in my gym bag which was hanging on a hook in my pressed wood construction locker, did the rest of the stuff (use your imagination) and headed to the showers.

Got back to my locker, opened it, and began dressing. One of the last things I do is to pull my phone from the gym bag to place it in my left front pocket - as I do this, I always glance at it to see if there was any activity (emails, texts, calls, etc.) while I was in the shower. Much to my surprise, it is showing Now Playing Fire by Barns Courtney.

Now, this song was indeed playing over the speakers in the locker room. Not obnoxiously loud, mind you. So, this means that, not only was my Pixel "listening" while there in my gym bag in my locker, but that its "hearing" must be pretty darned good.

It's no surprise that spy agencies the world over have apparently been trying to leverage this technology by hacking into phones of the rich, famous, and/or powerful...

I have not seen any yet.. and it's enabled. Haha

Come to think of it, my example above was the one and only time that I have seen anything "Now Playing".

Even right now, I have Frank Sinatra standards playing on my desktop PC speakers with my Pixel 2 XL sitting not 12 inches away and nothing at all.

I have this on by default and this function works well for songs that I already know, but rarely for songs I don't know. Which is kind of the point of this function to me. This seems like more of a novelty right now, hopefully it will improve. Meanwhile, Soundhound it is :).

Yeah my phone recognized another phone playing a random song and I didn't think it was even normal volume, it was actually quite soft.
I love this feature! Just wish it had even more songs available to recognize.

Yeah, you're not gonna make the list with Ole Blue Eyes...

This was never meant to replace Soundhound, it's not going out over the Internet to find out what song is playing.

BTW, just using the Google Assistant will work just as well as SoundHound or Shazam...

Very true! A simple squeeze then "what's playing?" and in seconds it recognizes one of my favorite Italian pop singers.

I did not know that. I'll give that a try next time :).

Will this feature "learn" songs? If it does not recognize a song, then I get the song recognized via assistant, will the song then be learned and integrated into that database?

I'd GLADLY let it take up more phone space or even stay connected to the internet to be able to identify any song....

Agreed. Should be online. Seems like it's local only to appease all the paranoid users. Maybe have online id as a feature you can disable.

Hmm...ok, I have AOD off and on notifications only - I see the Now Playing on lock screen only...maybe I just don't have this set up correctly then...
