I don't know why, but as soon as I heard that HP merged with Palm, I just thought to myself, "I bet they will release a kick butt Palm device right after I bought the Evo".

So, fellow defectors, what are your thoughts on this now that Palm has deep pockets on their side?

It'll take time and HP makes horrible looking phones and PDAs.
We'll probably see a netbook or tablet before a new phone.

I may stay with Android )':

Agree, they will take longer than I am willing to give them. I have always said I like WebOS but still plan to go with the EVO but this time next year, might consider a Palm/HP device. I think WebOS needs more than just hardware, it needs to age/grow a little more and that will take some time.

Now that WebOS has a future it is certainly giving me doubts about switching to Android. On the one hand I think we will see some immediate benefit from the merger in that Palm can go for broke between now and the completion of the deal and that developers will no longer be scared off by the instability.

Personally I'm still leaning towards the EVO, but I'm no longer certain I can't wait for the next palm device.

I will be going EVO when it hits. It's entirely possible that HP will be able to take the gorgeous WebOS and but on some quality hardware, but not tommorow, not next month and probably not by the end of this year. It will take a while before the merger is finalized completely, and then they have to sit down and figure the actual device details. And will the end result be good? Maybe, but pretty much everyone under the sun KNOWS Evo will be the phone of the year, and it's tough to argue with that.

Hm, I don't think that they will scrap what ever R&D they did so far, if anything, they can probably hire more people now and work at a faster pace.

That's all to be determined. HP could very well decide they don't like the direction of whatever hardware Palm may have bee working on. Whatever they may have been working on may be so early that it can be reshaped.

The last few months have shattered my glowing image of Palm/WebOS is this seals my thinking until it's proven wrong.

i'm still getting the EVO. i remember last xmas when i got my sister a new laptop from BB. and had to return it twice because the speakers sounded like **** (they would crack at medium voice to high volume settings). and the store manger also opened up another one for us to test out. same results. maybe that store got a bad batch. but that was enough for me to say they don't have great built quality.

I did have the thought that maybe wait to get the EVO with this news, but I think I'm still going to get it and just see what Palm/HP come up with next year, then decide.

Yeah, been running into a lot of problems with HP laptops.

I am sticking to the Evo plan too, got plenty of time until next year around this time how everything develops.

I agree, HP has been know for poor build quality. Not sure if this was a great PR merger, but at least it isn't a company you have to worry about running out of money soon, and their tech supports are in the same country (India), so that makes it easier.

I'm definitely still getting an Evo. I loved my Pre and everything about webOS until about a couple of months ago. When all of the doom and gloom surrounding Palm started coming public, it made me start to at least question webOS. Afterall, there had to be some reason most of the world didn't want a webOS device. All of the poor business decisions and limited resources aside, I realized that I don't even really like the card interface all that much. It is nice and intuitive, not to mention fun to flick cards off the screen, but I realized that it is actually too simple for me. I would rather be able to see a few different things at one time (i.e. widgets with Android) than have to flick through a bunch of cards. I think I will end up liking the leap feature in Sense a lot better than the card interface in webOS.

Another thing of course is the app situation. I know that most of the 50k Android apps aren't must have apps or anything, but I also know that most of Palm's 2k are the same way. More importantly, Android already has many useful apps that Palm may or may not get in the future. Which is exactly the problem with webOS; it has great potential, but forward-looking potential doesn't mean very much in today's ultra competitive, highly developed mobile market. As fast as the mobile world evolves and improves, people don't have to choose a device that will be great in the future; they have the option to buy a great device right now. So, in regard to the original question, I'm still getting an Evo because it is the best device available. But will I consider a webOS device in the future? Sure, if it's the best.

Yeah, my dad and I both have HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptops, and we have both said that we will never buy another HP computer. Apparently, this line of computers developed a known (by HP) issue where the wifi goes bad after about a year. When my dad called their tech support they gladly explained the problem, and added that the same problem also leads to a fried motherboard, and then basically concluded with "sorry, you're **** out of luck." So yeah, no HP's for me, which I will also expand to include phones unless they come out with some kind of webOS device that performs miracles.

Nope, I'm still getting the EVO!!! If/when HPalm does come out with some nice hardware using webos (tablet, netbook, phone), it'll be a very easy transition back into using the device since webos is so simple and natural to use anyway. I'm fairly excited to enter into this union with the little green robot!!

Miss out on the chance to get the first 4.3 inch super spec'd 4G phone on the hope of webOS releasing better hardware?

NOT A CHANCE! I will have one once this bad boy is released.

Wow! The cards are the one thing I'll really miss about WebOS. Not that it's "fun" to flick cards closed but I've become quite good at opening multiple apps simultaneously then flicking back and forth as they load. Maybe I have some A.D.D. but I can post to twitter, check facebook, check Pre and Android Central and not skip a beat.

I don't believe leap is the same. Doesn't that show the homescreens not running apps? I will dedicate one of those home screens as an app launcher in place of WebOSs.

Ooh, I'm sensing a new thread.

EVO all the way.......

If you buy a HP laptop you have to get there business models which am typing on right now and is 7 years old.

I personally can't wait to see what Palm and Palm/HP puts out next, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't upgrade till then. I disagree with brand loyalty, but I would say that I have brand respect for Palm.

idk, I think I need to see if they even plan on RELEASING a new phone worth looking at this year.

that being said I am going to buy an evo and if I hear any rumors of a web os phone with crazy hardware i would return the evo if it is within 30 days and just use a blackberry tour until the web os phone comes out

then if palm/hp phone is ugly or feels cheap like the current pre i'll go back to the evo...

if not I really need to think about it
