I keep wondering what the droid doesn't do that it was advertised to do that 2.1 will fix. I understand the want to have the latest and greatest, but 2.1 isn't going to fix any advertised function. I bought the droid without any expectation of an upgrade, so if they eventually get an upgrade for me, I will be ecstatic.

Thats the point of view a lot more people need to take. People are not owed this update by any means, but many fail to see that. The 2.1 will add some cool things, I am most looking forward to live wallpapers.

you're rooted right? live wallpapers is up and running on most of the roms I've used.

Yes, I am rooted by on stock ROM. I know some of them offer it but due to some circumstances, I remain stock :)

OK, but Google/Moto/Verizon have been telling people from the time the N1 was released that 2.1 is coming to Droid. Therefore, if I were to buy a Droid today, how would it not make sense for me to expect 2.1 to be released, and become upset with delay after delay?

Leaked documents and offhand comments don't count as "[they] have been telling people [officially]". The only real date we have to go by is the "Q1" announcement made by Motorola, iirc.

Expect, thats where you are wrong, never expect anything. Having been around smart phones for a while now, I can tell you first hand Verizon first of all is the worst, and official releases are ALWAYS slow, and usually, not on time. It happens. Its the nature of the game. If we didnt know Android 2.1 was coming to the Droid, everyone would be completely happy with the options we have now.

Be happy that the droid is a great phone. If you like updating your phone constantly go get a blackberry storm

I hope your joking about that, those things don't get updates. Trust me.

I think he's referring to the fact that the Storm went unofficially from .65 to .75 to. 83. to .85 to .99 to .103 etc. all the way up to 5.0.0.328 (that's where I jumped ship)

I can go all day on a single charge, checking the Market, texting multiple people, using Twidroid, and checking Facebook/my email every 30 minutes (manually) on 3G and with GPS on.
Everything except using it as a phone... :-)

To all you folks saying people aren't owed this update, that's BS. We're not talking the old school Nokia monotone simple phones here -- this is a smartphone, mobile computing device. Like myself, I use this exclusively for work, and I would be screwed if something happened to it -- hence I can't take chances on rooting.

That said, when you buy a computer, do you go in with expectations that you will never be able to upgrade the operating system? Exactly ... it's the same situation here. I think it's crap when people say not to expect updates -- one of the big things about these phones are their abilities for OTA's. Moto/Verizon is dropping the ball here -- but every company has been through this, including iPhone 3GS/ATT last year ...

Well we agree to disagree. I think customers should have higher expectations and demand more for their money. Nothing wrong with that. If moto advertises Droid with a fully working physical keyboard I'd expect it to work. It happens moto advertised droid to have regular software updates and support.

understandable, but if you were asked the difference between many of them you could NEVER find it... ;)

I have to respectively counter your argument. While yes, it's a smartphone, it does nifty fun things, but you are NEVER owed an upgrade at a certain date. Take your Windows7 computer, you NEVER know when that will update, do you? Yes, it happens and its cool, and the Droid update will come, but its not as big of a deal as others are saying. It doesn't fix something thats broken and renders the phone useless, or completely revolutionize it, now does it? Whether the update was pushed back due to the OTA provider, or Verizon just well being Verizon, is unknown and really just heresay at this point. Things get delayed, its all in the fun of the smart phone game.

I 100% agree. Updates are commonplace, and are definitely welcomed by any tech community, but we aren't OWED an update. Even when Windows XP and Vista desperately needed service packs, we weren't OWED them. Even though they needed the service packs, we still couldn't do anything about the OS's problems until the updates were released. As you may recall, these Windows releases were not updated or patched over night. There were months of frustrations and pissed off IT guys until FINALLY microsoft released the updates. I'm just glad that we only have minor issues with 2.0.1, and not major ones. there would be an even bigger uproar regarding the delay of 2.1. That brings me to my next point. No matter how much all of you complain, whine, whimper, bash Motorola, bash VZW, condemn the Droid, threaten to swtich carriers, switch phones, etc. IT WILL NOT MAKE THE UPDATE GET RELEASED ANY FASTER. All we can do is wait, and enjoy our phones the way they are until the update is released.

2.1 might make the system run a bit smoother but it is more of an aesthetic upgrade. aside from all of the flash it is the same device that can do the same functions. if you buy a product with the idea that you are guaranteed/owed and upgrade you are going to live a life of dissatisfaction. What happens if you bought the droid and moto or android just colapses and goes bankrupt and there is nobody else to support an upgrade. you don't buy anything on the ideas of what it can possibly do in the future. you buy it for what you can do with it now. if you are not satisfied with your droid then you should return it. it might not be the device for you. do i think the upgrade should be pushed out ASAP, yes. do i think people deserve an update, yes. but it should not be the basis of your mindset when you purchase a device. if you are never satisfied with what you have and always want bigger and better then everything will seem empty once you obtain it because there will always be new, better, faster upgrade to anything you buy. do some research before you buy something and see if you think you will be happy with it (as is) before you fork over the cash to buy it.

I agree, the phone is very capable as is. The 2.1 update will not make that much of a difference as far as what the phone can do or the experience you have with it. The best part of the update will be additional homescreens as far as I am concerned. I am rooted so I have pretty much all that the upgrade offers as far as we know. Live wallpapers are not that big of a deal after you've seen them for awhile, they actually get kind of annoying after awhile to me. I am not saying I don't want the upgrade to get pushed out, I'm just saying a lot of people are going to be let down once it is because i think a lot of people's expectations of what the upgrade is going to give them is awful high. Just my opinion.

I would think pinch to zoom browsing and gallery with swipe are significant features. Just ask the iphone.

Yes they are pretty cool, especially the gallery, but i find the double-tap zoom in the browser to be more accurate and faster than the pinch to zoom.
