Official Froyo Update Instructions for Samsung Captivate - It's Here!

Like puppets on a string we've finally gotten Froyo w/o BT dialing.

Thanks At&T/Samsung.

BTW Samsung, this Captivate is the first and last Samsung product I will have in my lifetime.

Meaning presently the Samsung brand name was excluded from consideration for the most recent LCD TV purchase.

I have read a bunch of forums, have followed steps exactly--took me awhile to work through kies not even recognizing my captivate, but am finally at the point where it connects to kies; however, I keep getting the 'unregistered device'.

I have tried multiple machines--Win7, XP, etc--and that's as far as it will go, unregistered device and 'phone upgradge' button is greyed out. My phone is stock, non-rooted, what am I missing?

I had the same error. You never used Odin? I assumed that's what did it to mine.

Not that I know of...this was a replacement phone--from AT&T as my original one was flaky. is there a way for me to know of Odin was used on it? If not, does doing a factory reset clear out possible problems for me to actually upgrade?

EDIT Update: Just found another post of yours detailing some steps:

http://forum.androidcentral.com/t-captivate/62653-froyo-update-preparation-faq.html

Going to try this approach--I'm 1010 build, so I'm following the additional XDA-developers link you included.

Man, what a PIA to get this update, but if it all works, I'll finally be happy. Thank you for your initial help.

If you haven't been rooted, there's no need for this. If it doesn't work, take it to AT&T. If they can't make it work, then they should give you a new phone.

Well I had already started down the road of doing those steps...redid everything step-by-step, and still shows as 'unregistered device' when I connect to Kies. This is very disheartening....guess a trip to AT&T is in order, but it's just weird to me that if I'm back to stock again--from following posts--when it doesn't recognize my phone and only shows as 'unregistered device'. :( Which Samsung would've done this as OTA update instead of Kies, it's been nothing but probs for myself--and lots of others based on forum posts I've read.

Mine is a 1010 too, so I think it has more to do with that than Odin. Makes me wonder whether Samsung is going to send mine back with Froyo or Eclair on it.

After I accept the terms and click update, I get a result that it couldnt be updated and to remove my battery and try again. I've tried about 20 times. Anyone know what is wrong?

Unable to get update to work

After I accept the terms and click update in Kies, the result shows that SGH-I897 couldn't update.

1. Remove and reinsert battery
2. Try again.

I've done this about 20 times....can anyone help???

1) Are you using a non-standard launcher?

-If so, this needs to be disabled before updating. Kies only recognizes touchwhiz.

2) Do you have any kind of lagfix installed (OCLF, voodoo)?

-Probably need to disable before updating.

//-----end------

If this helps, please consider pressing "Thanks" button, it makes me smile.

AoN.

OK, if you had nothing non-standard on your phone, I'd suggest either

1) Calling AT&T and telling them the update failed, asking for next steps (safest first step).

or

2) Consider using a ROM to revert, and then updating (which might void your warranty, negligible but non-zero risk involved).

AoN

For anyone still having the issue, I figured it'd be wise to post my solution here. I wasn't able to get Kies Mini to detect my Captivate.

What I did was look around and I ended up finding out that there's a version of Kies Mini just called, well, Kies. It's like a crappy version of iTunes. I tried it out on a whim. Downloaded it, installed it, plugged in my phone and connected it into Kies mode and ... it worked. It detected it, told me a firmware update was available and within 5-10 minutes was rockin' Froyo.

I found the link (which I subsequently lost) on the XDA Developers forum so... try looking there? Honestly, just google it and you'll find it super easy. Good luck to everyone still having issues!

Upgraded last night, and it went very smooth. The only catch I found was that I needed USB debugging on before Mini Kies would see the phone. Your mileage may vary.

However, I did see a very odd and potentially carreer-threatening issue immediately after the upgrade:

I had an Exchange email account setup before the upgrade, set up to sync email and calendar. After the phone came up and did its first sync, it apparently spammed everyone at my company with a whole raft of meeting cancellation requests. Thankfully these were all for meetings in the *past*, so I didn't do any real damage, but I'm really troubled by this.

Called Samsung support but they had not heard of this issue and couldn't tell me if it would happen again on the next calendar sync, so I've disabled my Exchange calendar sync. Too bad, it was convenient to have on there.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was running a rooted stock 2.1 with sideloading enabled, ClockworkMod, Busybox, and Titanium Backup. But those are the only non-standard changes I had made.

Whew. What a hassle. Everything went OK until the screen went blank and the phone started the random vibrations every few minutes. Luckily, I found exoguy's helpful hint about what to do then. If you haven't seen them, go back to around page 6 or 7 of this thread.

Bottom line, I had to delete all of my data to get the phone to reboot. This is a stock phone, other than a few apps that I've installed, nothing major. But thanks to Samsung/AT&T, I had to completely re-setup my phone. Not a happy upgrade experience.

How long did you wait before you rebooted and blew away all your data? When I did my upgrade, I was in that same state (dark screen and intermittent vibrations...) for a few *minutes*. These virbrations were not random, it seemed to do: long wait, single pulse, short wait, three pulses, then repeat. This went on for probably 10 minutes, but it eventually woke up and all my data and apps were still intact. (Except Superuser, su and busybox which had been removed as I expected).

As an interesting sidenote, I notice now that when my phone boots up it still does a single cycle of this vibration pattern "one pulse, short wait, three pulses" before it fully comes up. I wonder what it's doing in there...

I learned about the Froyo update last night when talking with an AT&T rep in Warranty Exchange. I did my update directly from the Samsung website as instructed by the AT&T rep.

Be patient, it is a very tedious procedure, but well worth it. The only "glitch" I had was when the computer was installing drivers on the phone, there was no indication of status on the phone or computer. After 30 minutes of this, I checked the computer and noticed the phone was no longer recognized as a hard drive, so I followed the rest of the instructions and everything went smoothly from there.

I didn't lose any apps or data during the process, which is sweet. I did have to tweak the alarm that comes with the phone to get it working again.

I recommend printing the directions for reference before starting the procedure because there are a few reboots of the computer and phone.

There is a huge improvement over Eclair in the speed that apps and screens load, dealing with the Marketplace, etc.

Before August, I have to turn my phone in for a warranty exchange because the screen burn from the "status bar" and at least one of my apps is getting worse by the month!
