Official Froyo Update Instructions for Samsung Captivate - It's Here!

My experience in case it helps anyone:

Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Kies Mini v1.0.0.11014_6
Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones v1.3.1800.0
Stock phone with v2.1, no custom changes

1. backed up phone
2. started kies mini and let it upgrade (I had it previously installed and configured with my phone), then rebooted
4. started kies again and setup phone before plugging into USB (disabled resident apps like task killers, etc and disabled lockscreen password)
6. plugged in phone & clicked upgrade in kies.. followed kies instructions

Kies downloaded 2.2, then transfered it to the phone. The upgrade took about 15 min. The phone rebooted, vibrated a few times, but then was ready for use.

All my apps, settings, and data were preserved except my screens were reset. I had to re-setup all my icons, folders, and widgets.

The only app I had issues with was Lockbot (free) that I used to replace my Lockscreen wallpaper with. The new Exchange security and Lockbot didn't play nice together. I switched to Widget Locker (paid) instead and all is fine.

** My thanks to all on this forum and this thread **

I give up.

Seriously.

Kies Mini won't detect the phone. No matter what I do, it sits there, telling me to plug in my mobile phone like it hates me and taunts me.

I've installed everything to the letter-by-letter instruction of Samsung and installed of the x64 drivers I needed. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Home Edition. I'm completely out of ideas. I've ran everything as an Administrator, I've set the Kies Mini app to XP SP3 compatibility and everything else I've seen on this thread. I've reset to factory settings, wiped everything off the phone and re-installed the Kies program and drivers like, twice now. I've even tried to install it using some garbage old XP computer I have sitting around and even that wasn't going.

The phone is in debug mode, I'm not mounting it when I plug it in to be detected (and when I tried to do that, it still wouldn't go).

Is this still a problem for anyone or am I the only one left with this issue? It seems like everyone's gotten it to run at some point or another and I am completely confused and annoyed and lost at what I have to do to get it to install. Doing this stuff shouldn't be this difficult-- especially not for an official phone software.

I get the same thing. I click on the Keis icon, it says connect the phone, i do, computer stays in mtp device, so i am guessing it doesnt recognize my phone.. it will finish and it says everything is installed, but my phone does nothing.. no update message.. just a connected message.. wth?? this is too complicated.. i have tried this for two days now.. with the same messages.. seems you had the same issue, what did you do to fix it and get your phone upgraded?

I know it might be a pain, but if you can't get it to work by Monday, maybe you should try making a trip into AT&T. Not sure if it'll help but it's worth a try. In the meantime, try a different computer if you can get to one.

well im trying it on my computer for aurahack and same thing, not being recognized at all. i even tried custom drivers and nothing.

Make sure you're pressing the phone's volume up & down buttons simultaneously while reconnecting the mini USB to bring up the download screen.

"We don't have the software installed on our computers to help you" is what I was told by the guy I called at the Rogers store. So... more-than-most likely no on that. :/

Having the same issues...
Hopefully someone will give a detailed instruction sequence because I think we are doing the install out of order?

Hey guys. I'm trying to update my mom's Captivate. Kies recognized the phone and everything was good. Now its downloading the update and has been stuck at 69%. I'm thinking it just froze cos it hasn't moved in a while. At this point, the phone being in downloading mode and all, would it mess anything up if I removed the battery? I know you're not supposed to be but this has been taking too long. Anybody stuck as well?

im running a 64bit win7 and i ran kies first
then plugged my phone in (didnt recognize it)
so i started switching between kies and mount in the usb settings
and honestly i didnt see which one did the trick, but switching
the usb settings while plugged in helped me to move forward

I just updated my wife's Captivate. It was a very easy experience. The entire process including the install of Kies Mini was less than 30 minutes.

Here are my thoughts for those about to do the update. 1.) Use a 32 bit PC. I know that 64 bit machines are supposed to be compatible but in my unscientific survey there seemed to be a disproportionate number of users with problems running a 64 bit OS. 2.) No need to download the update in advance. Kies Mini does it. 3.) On the phone reboot before it is ready to use, mine hung for a few minutes on the Galaxy S screen. 4.) So far everything that was installed is still there. Widgets have to be reset, but downloaded ones are still on the ADD TO HOME / WIDGETS screen.

Good luck with the update!

I updated to 2.2 on Friday. Default out of the box screens returned. All my email, messaging, gmail settings where there. Just had to make changes to the widgets to return my screens back to what I had before the update. There are some functional & technical changes, but I don't see why it took so long to release the 2.2 update! Europe had 2.2 in September/October and 2.2.1 in November. Now they're getting 2.3 in March? US gets 2.2, not 2.2.1. I need bluetooth voice dialing (BTVD)! Not Vlingo or Google voice, or any other faux bluetooth voice dialing app! I need to be able to use BTVD the way it works on ANY NON-ANDROID PHONE! So we need to wait another 2, 3, 4 monthe for 2.2.1? Most will, but I won't. Enough already! Serendipity here I come! Download - Serendipity

miniapplication launcher has stopped working... I keep getting this message

I don't really want the official froyo, I just want to check it out

Do you have IE9? I was having the same problems and did a little looking and found that if you have IE9 it cause issues. Uninstall the update by going to control panel>programs>view installed updates and then uninstall it from there. After I did that I was golden.

Not that big of a deal...
2.2 is not a GREAT update!
Phone doesn't work any faster ......
Kind of a waste of time I think!!!!!!!!

Not sure about your 3G, but you might want to check the wi-fi ip setting to make sure that the "use static ip address" toggle is OFF. >wireless and network/Wi-Fi settings, then use the settings soft key below the name Samsung to bring up "Advanced." This will bring up more wi-fi options, incl the one for static ip. Make sure it is not on. This method of getting to these advanced settings is different that in 2.1, but they have given us more options to work with.

Found the problem...mobile network settings, use packet data was turned off. Clicked it on and off I flew. Thanks for the help.
