It's not that simple. The screen is engineered to an aspect ratio of 16:9, aka HD aspect ratio. To just "extend the screen out" they would have to also widen the screen to maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio which throws everything off. Now the screen is wider so we need to redesign the case. The case is wider so we have to reengineer the internals. It's now a wider phone, how does that feel ergonomically? Is it a good fit in the hand versus the height of the phone? What does it do to weight? It's not as simple as just "extend the screen."They could have easily removed that bottom black bezel and just extended the screen out.
I wish they could find a way to not have that piece of plastic circumnavigating the phone. I always disliked the appearance of that.
