Update........

When i flashed back to stock 4.02 I had forgot I switched Voice Privacy to off and dtmf tones to long. So to check what you guys have go to phone/menu/settings/DTMF Tones and set to long. and Voice Privacy unchecked. So far it's been almost 2 weeks without the problem. I have had several over 30 min convos and the problem has not happen. So I hope that fixes it for everyone i will report back if it changes and I do have the problem.

That was a good catch, as i also stated in your thread.

Most data is pointing toward stock 4.0.2 being the problem child, and one of those two settings could really be the reason why. But I'll post what I've got so far later when Im not tired hah.

Right here folks. This is a totally different suggestion that anyone has ever given so far. Ive set my settings up this way as hes said, to see if this problem would persist at some point. In all reality, I have no idea what these settings mean. What is Voice Privacy and what are dtmf tones? If we can dig deeper into this and find out exactly what it means, we might have a solution. But its weird how it was all checked by default? Which Im not sure why. Can anyone explain exactly what these mean?

I have had my gnex since day one as he's my neighbor. He has had the problem daily. I have had very few mic problems. I don't know if it has anything to do with anything but the other day I was reading emails and had a call come in. About a minute into the call the mic went out. When I hung up, I checked my phone and a new email had come in. I haven't had time to test my theory but I am wondering if the mic issue is related to an email coming in while they phone is in use? Will test today and report back.

I believe Voice Privacy regulates your volume, how it's picked up by the mic, so as to make sure there's no bleeding? That seems like it could in fact be a culprit the more and more you think about it.

Sadly Im gonna be honest with you. I was just on the phone with Acer support about 30 minutes ago and the Mic Still cut off in the middle of the conversation, even with those items checked and selected. So Unfortunatly, No Dice.

Voice privacy should be unchecked, not checked. Checked is default. This might have been what you mean, but just in case it wasnt.

So you unchecked voice privacy and set dtmf tones to long? Another question do you have force gpu rendering on? Gpu rendering is not on for me, that's another difference I have now than before. If that doesn't fix it for you, the only other thing I did was flash back to stock. So could it be that flashing a fresh stock image could resolve the issue? I still don't have the issue as of today.

Data is showing practically everyone who has chimed in and submitted their info in this thread has GPU Rendering UNCHECKED, so that would not be a cause.

Im also believing that the people experiencing this problem may have just had a bad flash of either android or the radios. But who knows.

I'm running stock. And unchecked gpu rendering. :(

I have flashed multiple roms and 3 different radios... have had the same issue no matter what. I'll try to post all my stats tomorrow. Have to head to work soon.

I find that the issue occurs when I have low signal on the LTE radio... now I know, LTE doesn't support voice, but I wonder if switching from 4g to 3g doesn't someone play a role in this. I read a thread that suggested this earlier, but it was quickly debunked when a user manually switched between 4g and 3g while on a call and couldn't replicate the issue.

I only wonder this because outside of my home I have strong 4g everywhere and have never had the mic drop out problem. It has only happened DOWNSTAIRS (not upstairs), where my signal is weakest.

EDIT: And BTW, droidlife took a survey and about 33% of its readers were experiencing issues with the mic cutting out.

I also think it a signal issue. My phone does this, and also the annoying squeal in the ear thing, more often in areas of low reception (which seems like almost everywhere). If I go to the VZW store, which is 1 block from an antenna, no problems. I live in an area with no 4G, so it is off in the settings. This is my second Gnex, rooted running 4.04, and they have both done the same thing regardless of ROMs.
It is beginning to sound like some phones may have better reception than others, as returning the phone for a new one has solved the issue for some.
The Verizon store was reluctant to exchange my phone last time, they weren't able to "reproduce" the issue, so I am guessing that I'm just SOL at this point. Other than not being able to make phone calls, I love the device.. :-\

That's scary to hear that you had this issue when talking to someone on a LAN line. I have only experienced this issue with mobile phones. I"m now worried

Well I was getting the issue on all of my glaaxy nexus phones even the third one,I decided to keep. I was getting the issue on stock on all three phones and even on a rom I tried. I flashed back to stock and I still have not had the issue. When I am in a low signal area my phone starts to break up just like any other phone would. So maybe it is some sort of software glitch that might or might not be fixed by getting another phone or by re flashing the stock rom.

I switched over from T-Mobile to Verizon because my girlfriend is with Verizon and we talk a lot. I was happy with T-Mobile, very happy (except that their 4g isn't....really 4g) and the GNex looked awesome.

**ANYWAYS**

I've been with Verizon for 15 days. I've had 2 GNex's since then and I just called Customer Care and got them to send me a 3rd one >:]

I've been having the same issue (mic issue) with both of the GNex's . The second one though, vibrated very strangely. Like if there was broken plastic on the bottom of it everytime it vibrated. Looked online and saw some kid got his replaced so I did the same.

Well here's my info, hope it helps. Oh also, I had the first GNex for about 8 days and the second Gnex for 6 days.

Everything was the same with the other GNex i sent back, except for the serial number

OH another thing. idk if this matters...but the first GNex i sent back, I did that because the mic would suck and ALSO because sometimes the Mrs. wasn't getting my texts!

Also on both phones, its usually after 6 minutes the mic messes up. It's rare that I can have a 45 minute + conversation. It's happened, but it's rare.

I have also called other people and the mic also happens. I called mah boi, he has Cricket and same thing happened. Also with T-Mo customers. The Mrs is Verizon. LoL, the only way I can actually talk to her is by using my prepaid Verizon phone and call her from it :(

Okay, so i have 1 particular piece of data that I found very interesting while looking all of these over.

Please refer to this map:

4gmapcopy.jpg

These are all locations of people that are experiencing this mic cutout issue (at least from data we have gathered). In case you were wondering, this is a map of Verizon's 3g and 4g coverage area. the lighter red shows 3g only coverage while the darker red shows LTE and 3g areas. I pulled this right from verizons site about an hour ago.

What do all of these dots have in common? They are all located in densely populated areas of the United States with LTE capability.

You will see that Bismarck, ND is not in a LTE location, however it does seem to be in or near a coverage fringe area. Until there is more data supporting this issue occuring in areas with no LTE but very good 3g I am going to dismiss that exception.

A link to the raw input in google maps:

Data Dropout locations - Google Maps

The data so far also points out that it doesnt matter whether you have LTE on or not in these areas, the mic drops out regardless. VOIP calls or calls over the data connection themselves (like google talk, skype, etc.) seem to be completely uneffected by this, so this is a location-based problem with the CDMA radio, possibly due to interference with LTE towers. Most people who have sent their data were running stock android 4.0.2 when the issue occurred, however the issue does not seem to be related to build number as people with custom ROMS and leaked builds have had this issue as well.

no setting in the phone itself seems to have any effect on the frequency of this problem.

Serial numbers seemed to follow a pattern at first Everyone, with the exception of 2 people, who chimed in with this issue had a serial number that began with 014*******. The others were 016*** and 9900****, leading me to believe if there was some sort of hardware problem with the phone causing this issue to persist, it is relevant on every phone, not just a specific batch.

Until now I've just thrown around a lot of unorganized data, but in conclusion:

I believe the problem lays either with our radio firmware, Verizon's hardware on their towers, or defective hardware on the phone in general, with the likeliness of each in that exact order. The fact that this issue seems to only occur in these dense 4g areas isnt coincidental. It could be related to heavy traffic on verizon's network in these locations for all we know. Either way, I'm hoping Verizon/Google already figured this one out and the next OTA has a fix.
