OMG my camera lens is shattered!

I had seen the videos of the G5 replacement and it looks like there's a little more work involved with this one but in a good way. The plastic piece looks like no trouble to remove and would make replacing the glass piece super easy.

I had emailed LG Friday and they responded saying I could send my phone in for repair, when all I asked was whether or not it would be possible to get a replacement piece of glass because I felt confident doing the repair myself. Maybe I'll try calling support in the morning and just raising hell without shooting expletives at the person on the other end of the line and just explain to them that I'll happily pay for a new lens, I just want to fix it and be done with it and not send my phone in. Really do enjoy this phone but it's a huge inconvenience not being able to use the camera.

If you send it in it will take about 2 weeks round trip

That means 2 more weeks of using my N7 with the crippling battery update and annoying message every time I try to unlock it (I swear they made it lag even worse than ever probably just to get us to return them even sooner). I mean I'm using it mostly all day as it is so I don't risk damaging this thing worse, but they didn't even say what the cost would be either. I'd have to send it in first.

While watching Jerryrig's video it almost looks as if they should just manufacture the plastic piece with the lens to completely replace the glass. Would be faster and super easy to do and I'd happily pay a bit more for convenience

I guess I'm SOL unless I want to send it in (no thanks), I keep checking daily to see if anyone has come out with a replacement yet, no dice. I took a razor blade and removed the cracked glass for now and doubled up some clear Gorilla tape to protect the cameras and keep stuff out. Ordered a cheap case from Amazon to protect it. Looks ghetto, but for the time being it's whatever. Picture quality is minimally effected by the tape, but it's hardly noticeable

It cost $175 bucks too....They are counting it as a insurance claim. I've been waiting since day 2 of receiving my phone for this part. Where you would send the phone to fix doesn't even have a part number for it yet either. Where I live they have a well respected repair place that even my carrier referred to take it in but they don't have the part yet either. In the past and on some rare occasions they have been able to use parts from other phones but with this being a new design on the camera there are none available that would work so here we are a month later and I am still waiting.

If you send it to LG for you don't have to treat it as an insurance claim. They would charge you for a repair. I don't know what they would charge.

I tried to look up how long it took for the G5's camera glass part to come out and it looks like it took 1 month to 1.5 months after launch. so hopefully the part comes out sometime soon or in December.

Hmmm.. I wonder if they recently changed the design.

I noticed my glass has a slight recess at both the regular lens and the wide angle lens, almost like a cutout for the lens. And yes, I have taken off the protective plastic that was on the lens wen I took it out of the box.

I'll try to take a macro shot of it with my DSLR and post it later.

My LG V20 camera glass cover just shattered this weekend. I wouldn't do the insurance route either as its not like I dropped the phone or anything that would normally cause glass to break. I had the phone in a case so that if I layed it down it wouldn't touch the lens cover. But guess even a case isn't enough to protect this thing. I also had to deal with 2 replacement Note 7 recalls. Guess should have just went with the Samsung s7 edge instead of this LG, but besides the camera lens cover being so fragile, I think the phone is awesome. I really don't recommend anyone to buy this phone now until the issue has been resolved.

Sorry to hear that. Very concerning. I've dropped mine a few times (in a slim Tudia case) on hard and soft surfaces with no issues yet. Makes me wonder if the glass tolerance is too tight .

Looks like you punctured it with a pen. I've dropped mine 4 times now on my hardwood floors without a case and not a single scratch, dent, or break.

Think if I poked any other phone with a pen it wouldn't have cracked like this but then again I wouldn't want to try it. Just like if you were using a stylus, on your screen it shouldn't crack but I guess if you were to apply ample enough force to it I guess so. If I end up replacing with the insurance, hopefully it was because the first batch were a lemon. Also just because you dropped the phone and it didnt shatter, could mean maybe not all phones are defective or the way the phone fell it didnt hit the the camera area on impact. Or maybe its not from a fall that causes it and its from a scratch. I have no idea really, other then it being weird to find my phone this way out of no where.

You should consider the Samsung Galaxy S7 even more defective, as thousands of those camera glasses have shattered as well. Just look how many replacement kits have been sold on ebay for it.

One common theme i have noticed on the LG breaks is that the owner had a case (if dropped, the phone is designed to break up into 3 pieces to reduce the impact), or owner was using the flash a lot (heating up the glass causing it to expand).

I have never used the flash (HDR works great and low light never a problem), and I dont use a case because its not needed at all.

That sucks, as just upgraded my wife from the s5 to the s7 today. But I assume, if I search for galaxy s5 camera shattering there's bound to be something.

I doubt it's actually designed to fall apart into 3 pieces. That's how it behaves when dropped but not necessarily how it's designed.
As for the case being a factor in helping the glass break I also doubt it. I think what you're seeing is that most people case their phone and therefore most of the ones breaking just happen to have a case. I have dropped mine three times in the last two days and no breakage. When the glass broke on my G5 it was not dropped. If it didn't happen by itself it might have flexed in my pocket or rubbed up against something unnoticed. After I repaired it I dropped it on a hard surface and the lcd popped out on one side. I didn't notice the lcd right away but it separated enough that the power button didn't work and sim card tray was jammed but no broken lens and it was in a case. Could be the replacement glass was better.
