I'm currently using an iPhone 4S on contract with AT&T until late October. But I'd like to switch to a Nexus 4.

Can I buy the unlocked Nexus 4 from Google, pop my SIM card into it and start using it without penalties or fees from AT&T?

Apologies if this has been asked before...

Thanks for the help!

Of course!

That's the great benefit of Google unlocked Nexus 4

Thanks for the reply. But would there be any problems with AT&T since my iphone is still on contract?

Nope as long as you're not canceling the contract for ATT.

Think of it as this way ATT gave you a discount on that iPhone just to lock you in a 2 year contract. As long as they're getting your money they don't care what phone you're using.

No you can even go into att and buy ANY phone at full price and use it with your service. I do it all the time.

Also FYI - After you get the N4 and you decide its gonna be your daily driver you can even sell your iPhone 4S even if your still in a contract and get some of the money that you put into the Nexus device. I would think you can get a good $250 or so for the device. Check out swappa.com they are friendly and safe to use. Also CL is nice but it can be sketchy at times.

You're fine! As long as you are fine with spending the full price for the phone you're all set to to. Enjoy!

Good luck with your nexus purchase. I have one and a galaxy s4. I love both of them.

I have a very similar question to the start of this thread, but I want to make sure I understand everything before I purchase anything.

Situation: I need a new phone desperately, my contract has expired. I would really love to get the Nexus5 but it is too expensive for me right now. I am willing to sign a new contract with att.

Question: If I was to sign a new contract with att and get the moto x (which I could basically end up getting free or $50 for the 32gb version after my motorola tradeup program reimbursement), and then a couple of months from now buy the unlocked nexus 5, can I just swap the sim card (or whatever I would need to do to activate it) and start using the nexus 5 instead of the moto x? Based on what I read in this thread I can do this.

Question 2: If I can do this, what are my options with the moto x? Can I sell it? Can it be unlocked? Someone else on my plan also needs a new phone and is eligible for an upgrade, can they begin using the phone?

If I could sell the moto x unlocked and get $150-$200 out of it that would put a nice dent in the cost of the Nexus 5.

I would appreciate any clarification. I am new to the forum so I hope I have submitted this in the right place.
Thanks!

The Moto X uses a nano Sim and Nexus 5 uses a micro Sim, so you can't just swap them.

I was thinking of switching to att and buying a LG g2 on contact (micro sim), then selling the g2 and using that sim in my Nexus 5.

Is that a that a legit scheme on att?

Yep, but if you're using AT&T Next, you'll be still paying for the LG G2. And you'd have to pay the full price, not just after one year, because you'd have to trade the phone in for one year upgrades.

Get a new sim card from at&t, although I think Google sends one if you specify?

Selling the moto x is legal

You do Not have to trade the phone in after one year.

I think they are saying that the you have too if you want your yearly upgrade. In terms of the upgrade it's correct. Or you can wait out the 2 years of you want. At that point next is a rip off. Then again it pretty much is anyways. Imo anyways.

For the yearly upgrades, yes you do.

Right, i was just saying you don't have to. But then yes it would be a rip off, any which way you look at it. Even though the phone is cheaper overall vs buying up front full price and no contract, buying the phone at subsidized price for 24 months is better.
