on screen keyboard not responding when i want to unlock the tablet

hi, i cannot unlock the password: the keyboard does not appear on the screen when i tap the password box.
shouldn't be the touch screen problem, it responds when i e.g tap the small round in the bottom of the tablet (magnifying glass appears on screen), i can swipe the notifications. looks more like the tablet was locked after someone entered incorrect password many times, but i am not sure: it was in the hands of a grandma and 2 years old boy for a few hours, so they wouldn't tell
is there a way to unlock the tablet without hard reset?

Welcome to Android Central! Even if your grandmother or boy fiddled around with it, the keyboard should still appear when you want to enter the password. Is it connected via Bluetooth to a Bluetooth keyboard?
